Abstract

Life satisfaction plays an important role in the quality of life and performance of a human in any profession, including teachers. The teacher is a professional educator with the main task of educating, teaching, guiding, directing, training, and evaluating students in elementary and middle schools. Life satisfaction refers to an individual’s overall judgment or global evaluation about his or her life condition. This study is a quantitative descriptive survey study that aims to analyze and describe the relationship between demographic factors with school teachers’ life satisfaction at Palopo and Toraja Region in South Sulawesi.  This research using SWLS (Satisfaction with Life Scale) with 111 respondents who came from several schools in Palopo and Toraja region. Result of this research found that most of the teachers (67,6%) were satisfied with their lives, and the rest (32,4 %) are not satisfied with their lives. Based on the cross-tabulation analysis and non-parametric correlation, its proven that several demographic factors, namely gender, employment status, ethnic groups, length of services, income perception, and salary comparison perception have a significant correlation with teachers’ life satisfaction. In particular, with ordinal regression analysis, we found that educational status, income perception, and salary comparison perception has influence teachers' life satisfaction. Government and Private Educational Foundation should do effort to increase teacher’s income and have a career development plan for teachers to maintain their subjective wellbeing level. Keywords: demographic factors, life satisfaction, Palopo and Toraja, teacherDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17977/um023v8i22019p207

Abstract

Many researchers make an error in data analysis, where researchers analyzing data using the raw score on the instrument with an ordinal scale. Error in the use of raw score for an instrument with an ordinal scale can be overcome by using measurement model testing, namely tau-equivalent and parallel. The purpose of this study is to examine the best measurement model of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). The research method is Secondary Data Analysis approach (SDA). The secondary data was combined from two previous studies. The quantitative research analysis technique used to test the three measurement models in SWLS was confirmatory factor analysis. The unidimensional model of confirmatory factor analysis indicates that tau-equivalent is the best measurement model in SWLS testing (χ2(9)=13.759, p > .05 and RMSEA < .05). Based on the result, an implication measuring instruments using raw score can be used while measurement model testing of an instrument is tau-equivalent.

Abstract

Achieving life satisfaction is the hope of every person, including lecturers. Based on preliminary study, problem of life satisfaction of PTKK lecturers is a real phenomenon but has never been studied scientifically so far. This study aims to examine the life satisfaction model of PTKK lecturers in terms of religiosity, self-efficacy, social support, and perceived organizational support with the meaning of work as a mediator variable. The research method used in this research is quantitative correlational with participants are 252 lecturers from 41 Christian theological seminaries in East Java. This study uses six instruments to measure each variable and the data analyzed using the SEM-PLS technique. Based on the R2 value for the endogenous variables, it was found that meaning of work got significant positive effect of 36.8% from the independent variables. While the R2 value for the life satisfaction variable is 0.259, which means that life satisfaction can be explained by variance in the independent variables of 25.9%. The results of the research hypothesis indicate that religiosity and self-efficacy have an indirect effect on life satisfaction with the meaning of work as a full mediator, while social support does not affect the meaning of work and life satisfaction. This study also proves that perceived organizational support has a direct and indirect effect on life satisfaction with the meaning of work as a partial mediator. This research result is expected to enhance efforts to increase life satisfaction of lecturers from Christian theological seminaries in East Java.
