Abstract

Abstract

Anxiety towards mathematics among secondary school students have been reported. Anxiety creates strong negative emotions and can hinder a person's cognitive, learning and academic performance. Fear of mathematics came early in the educational process and if this is not handled properly, it will negatively affect the students to adulthood. In learning mathematics, emotional intelligence (EI) impacts on how a person deals with emotions, mathematics and the general self-regulations strategies that the person adopts. A study was carried out to access secondary students’ EI and their mathematical competency (MC). The EI was tested using an EI questionnaire for adolescents (IKEM-R/MEQI) consisting of 7 domains, while the MC was tested using selected questions from PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2012 released items. Analysis shows that EI predict significantly students MC, but with low correlational value. Most of the respondents have moderate level of EI in all 7 domains whereby self awareness and self-regulation are the two domains with lowest scores. On the other hand, most of the students’ MC are poor. This particular research shows that EI is not a good predictor of MC which contradicts other reports. However it is suggested that the data collection can be improved by examining students’ EI while they are engaging in activities that call for MCs rather than doing it before or after the tasks. However, this topic is one that not comprehensively understood by students. This study purpose is to seek students understanding about probability topic and to know problem that students’ face when solving prability problems. A qualitative study that employed case study design has been coducted with sampling of eight of year 10 students selected purposively in one public secondary school in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. First stage of data collection came from diagnostic tests to students; then four of the students are chosen to be interviewed. Data from interviews and diagnostic test analyse with thematics method. The study found that students have misconception to probability concept, they have poor understanding and cannot understand terms used.

Abstract

With the aims to find out how the attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) motivation model was applied into mathematics education; what research methods were used; and what outcomes were reported in these empirical studies, this paper systematically reviewed the empirical studies applied the ARCS motivation model into mathematics education trends on 2013-2023. Among 26 articles identified, the findings of this review indicated that the data from several contexts support the applicability of the ARCS model in diverse environments for mathematics learning, across different stages students, and in various nations. Three dimensions of the role of the ARCS model in mathematics education studies are identified: instructional design; theoretical framework; and measurement tool. Quantitative method was used most, and experimental studies and quasi-experimental studies were the main methods. Three types of outcomes were mainly focused on the past empirical studies: affective outcomes, cognitive outcomes, social outcomes. The findings highlighted the prospective paths that this area of research should pursue.

Abstract

Motivation plays a crucial role in enhancing students' achievement in mathematics, as motivated students are more likely to engage actively with the subject. However, in China, there is a concerning trend of declining motivation among students toward mathematics, with many exhibiting avoidance behaviors. Despite Ningbo's significance as a major city in China, there is a lack of studies and surveys addressing students' motivation in mathematics learning. This study addresses this gap by employing a questionnaire based on Keller’s ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) model, which has been proven effective in measuring students’ motivation. The survey, conducted among 384 high school students in Ningbo, China, aimed to assess their motivation levels in mathematics learning. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics 29 to calculate the mean and percentage for each item. The results revealed that the motivation level among high school students in Ningbo is notably low. Two significant factors contributing to this low motivation were identified: students’ lack of confidence due to the perceived difficulty of mathematics and the belief that mathematics is not closely related to real life.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the geometric thinking of young children who worked with GeoGebra to learn two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) geometry. GeoGebra is an open sourced dynamic mathematics software which is applicable for learning mathematics from primary school to secondary school and to higher education. Thirty pupils studying in second grade (Year 2) at a school located in Pontian, a district in one of the Malaysian state participated in the study. They attended GeoGebra sessions to construct and analyze dynamics of two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometry after learning these topics in the conventional setting. Pretest and posttest on two-dimensional and three-dimensional spatial ability based on Van Hiele level of geometric thinking were administered to the pupils. The comparison between pretest and posttest results demonstrate significant enhancement in visualization and informal deduction for both 2-D and 3-D geometry. Moreover from the intervention, the students benefit most in analyzing 3-D and visualizing 2-D geometry. Interestingly, skills and knowledge acquired through activities using GeoGebra in student-centered learning environment could be successfully transferred to paper and pencil test.
