Abstract

Abstract

The development of social media and internet networks has stimulated new scientific interest in terms of online civic engagement, resulting in a redefinition of deliberative politics and the public sphere. On the other hand, all aspects of human life today have been translated into big data and recorded in their activities on social media. The shift from using humans as the unit of study to using algorithms creates a new problem for academics in social science. This online civic engagement research aims to find out the topic of discourse for digital citizens in the discourse of moving the nation's capital city (IKN) and what the ideology behind the discourse is by utilizing Twitter big data. This study used a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design type. The quantitative method used is topic modeling with the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) technique, while the qualitative method used is the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method from Norman Fairclough, who sees language as a practice of power. Findings from the topic modeling analysis revealed that there were four themes in the IKN discourse: agreeing to move the state capital, objecting to move the state capital, supporting the discourse on moving the state capital, and the fourth theme, law and eradication of corruption. From the results of critical discourse analysis, it is known that there is a diametrical division in the IKN issue as a result of identity politics that emerged after the 2014 Presidential Election. In every discussion on the IKN discourse, there is a conflict between Islamic populism and Nationalist-Secular populism.

Abstract

Cases of sexual violence frequently exposed on social media have sparked intense discussions among digital citizens. This phenomenon has given rise to new patterns of participation in the digital public sphere, indicating progress in efficiently and effectively expressing public aspirations through online civic engagement. Thus, online citizen engagement further strengthens the concept of digital citizenship as an active participation form in the digital world. In this study, the topic modeling method is utilized as a machine learning approach with statistical methods to identify topics within large, unstructured document collections. The applied topic modeling method is Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), using data collected from Twitter through crawling big data using the Twitter API. The results of this research reveal the discourse on sexual violence discussed by citizens with seven topics, namely: 1) Indonesia's sexual violence emergency; 2) Support for the enactment of the Draft Law on the Prevention of Sexual Violence, opposing parties against the Draft Law on the Prevention of Sexual Violence; 3) Pros and cons of Minister of Education and Culture and Research and Technology Regulation No. 30 of 2021 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Higher Education; 4) Sexual violence as sadistic behavior; 5) Sexual violence on campuses and in Islamic boarding schools; 6) Support for Minister of Education and Culture and Research and Technology Regulation No. 30 of 2021 for the prevention and handling of sexual violence on campuses; and 7) Stop sexual violence against children and women. From the analysis of the topic modeling results, it is evident that with a good understanding of citizen engagement facilitated by technology, the younger generation can develop digital citizenship in the practice of online civic engagement.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of citizens' expressions and participation in the digital public sphere, as well as to uncover public opinion anomalies on a state official's policy post. The research subjects were netizens' comments on the "Digital Era Education Development Strategy" video on Vice President @gibran_rakabuming's TikTok account. A descriptive qualitative approach was applied through the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDAS) method. The entire population of 1,353 comments was collected without sampling limitations (total sampling). Data collection was conducted from the time the post was uploaded on May 2, 2025, until April 21, 2026, using a web scraping technique via Apify. The data were then analyzed using NVivo software, encompassing sentiment analysis and lexical extraction (word cloud and word tree). The results reveal a paradoxical reality. Quantitatively, positive sentiments dominated with an 8:3 ratio. However, the qualitative lexical analysis was predominantly filled with harsh words, personal attacks (toxic disinhibition), and repetitive sentence templates. This paradox proves the occurrence of public space manipulation by cyber troops (buzzers) to manufacture fake public consent, while organic citizen criticisms were filled with emotional aggression. This phenomenon confirms a digital civility crisis. Therefore, it is recommended that the government stop opinion manipulation practices to build authentic public trust, educational institutions reorient digital literacy curricula towards digital citizenship ethics, and platforms strengthen algorithmic transparency to crack down on coordinated inauthentic behavior.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of digital literacy skills on students’ understanding of the subject of Pancasila Education, as well as to compare the dynamics between state and private schools in the city of Yogyakarta. Using a quantitative approach of the ex post facto type with a correlational research design, the study involved 60 Year 11 students from State Senior High School 3 and Muhammadiyah Senior High School 4 in Yogyakarta, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via a questionnaire and analyzed using simple linear regression via SPSS version 31. The results indicate that digital literacy skills have a significant effect on students’ learning comprehension (Sig. < 0.001). The coefficient of determination (R-squared) value of 0.405 indicates that digital literacy contributes 40.5% to the variation in understanding of Pancasila education. Although there are differences in academic culture between state and private schools, digital literacy has proven to be a crucial cognitive tool in helping students filter information and construct knowledge independently. This finding emphasizes the importance of strengthening digital ethics and culture within the curriculum to transform the use of technology from mere entertainment into a means of reinforcing critical and responsible national values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the legacy of colonialism has influenced the formation of Indonesia’s post-colonial national identity, as well as to examine the forms of cultural and social resistance that have emerged in the effort to build a more inclusive and independent national identity. The legacy of colonialism is not limited to physical structures, but also encompasses ideological, social, and cultural dimensions that continue to affect the lives of Indonesian people. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach by examining various relevant sources, such as scholarly journals, books, indexed articles, and other supporting documents. The data were analyzed using content analysis, drawing on post-colonial theoretical perspectives, including the concepts of coloniality of power (Quijano), hybridity and mimicry (Bhabha), as well as the decolonization of knowledge. The findings indicate that resistance to colonial and global influences is manifested through the revitalization of local culture, the use of social media, and critiques of educational systems that continue to prioritize Western models. Although such resistance has developed significantly, major challenges remain, particularly in confronting globalization, which tends to drive cultural homogenization. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how Indonesian society actualizes such resistance in the process of constructing a national identity that is more relevant to the global context and local cultural diversity. It also highlights the need for stronger and more inclusive policies that are responsive to the dynamics of local cultures across different regions of Indonesia.

Abstract

The phenomenon of weakening social solidarity and increasing individualism in modern society reminds us of the importance of revitalizing the values of mutual cooperation and social responsibility as part of citizenship practices. This study aims to analyze these two values from the perspective of Robert Putnam's civic engagement as a form of social capital that strengthens public participation, trust, and community solidarity. The study uses a qualitative descriptive-analytical method with a library research approach through content analysis of various scientific literature sourced from Google Scholar, Mendeley, SINTA, and Scimago Journal and Country Rank. The results of the study indicate that mutual cooperation and social responsibility have a strategic role in strengthening citizen engagement amidst the challenges of globalization and digitalization that tend to encourage individualistic lifestyles. This study contributes to strengthening the concept of civic engagement based on local cultural values through the integration of Robert Putnam's thoughts with the values of mutual cooperation and social responsibility as a foundation for strengthening civic participation in the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between digital citizenship understanding and ethical behavior of students in using TikTok social media. The study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design and involves 66 students of class XII MAN 1 Way Kanan as samples through total sampling technique. Data were collected using a Likert scale questionnaire developed based on Ribble's (2015) theory for the digital citizenship understanding variable and Martin et al.'s (2018) theory for the ethical behavior variable. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test because one of the variables was not normally distributed. The results showed a correlation coefficient of ρ = 0.775 with a significance of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a positive and strong relationship between the two variables. This means that the higher the students' understanding of digital citizenship, the better their ethical behavior in using TikTok. This study concludes that digital citizenship plays an important role in shaping responsible digital behavior. The limitations of this study include the use of a correlational design, a single sample from one madrasah, and self-report data that may contain bias.
