Abstract

In this paper, we will discuss the design of the Indonesian language evaluation model for foreign speakers (BIPA), in particular the listening proficiency evaluation model. Listening proficiency evaluation tool is considered important because listening is a parameter for a foreign speaker to master other language skills. At this time, the presentation of the listening proficiency test for the Indonesian language proficiency test (UKBI) is considered difficult for foreign speakers to follow. The solution to overcome this problem is to design a listening proficiency evaluation tool based on the results of analysis of foreign language evaluation tools such as the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), America by analyzing the listening competency evaluation tool from TOIEC (Test of English for International Communication), and Europe with analyzing the DELF listening competency evaluation tool (Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française / Diploma in French Language Studies). The results of the study on the evaluation tool became an alternative basis for designing a model for evaluating listening proficiency in Indonesian for foreign speakers. This study aims to describe the design of the listening evaluation tool in Indonesian for foreign speakers. The data that will be produced in this research is in the form of an alternative lattice evaluation tool for listening proficiency in Indonesian for foreign speakers.

Abstract

This article explores the BIPA (Indonesian as a foreign language) learners’ competency in listening conversations using a real-life approach. This is based on the background that mastering a foreign language, especially listening in real-life conversation, is difficult even though they have learned the language. To address these issues, a real-life approach was adopted to train the BIPA students to listen to the conversations in a real-world setting. This study uses the qualitative descriptive method to investigate how using a real-life approach can aid BIPA learners in developing their listening abilities. BIPA students from India, Japan, Austria, and South Korea were included as a sample in this study. As a result, the appearance of other sound variants in real-life conversation turns out to become an aspect to distract them from listening. In addition, students frequently imitate pronunciation and pick up vocabulary from the literature and environment they are listening to. Therefore, the real-life approach helps the BIPA students to have a better understanding of listening in real-world conversations. Additionally, students can distinguish between different sound variants and pinpoint the purpose of their listening.

Abstract

While authenticity plays a vital role in foreign language learning, a significant disparity exists between classroom-based learning and the practical use of language in real-world contexts. IFL resources often lack authenticity, failing to mirror the genuine language encounters that learners face beyond the classroom. Therefore, this research explores the motivations, needs, and prior learning experiences of IFL learners to emphasize the importance of integrating real-life conversations into IFL learning materials. This descriptive qualitative research gathered data via surveys and semi-structured interviews with ten foreigners. The findings underscored the varied motivations of participants in learning Indonesian, including personal and familial connections, communication requirements during travel, interests in language, and cultural identity. Participants engaged in instructor-led and self-directed learning as endeavors to boost their proficiency. Intriguingly, there was a discrepancy between their learning experiences and needs. Although the provided IFL materials had successfully fulfilled the learners’ needs in formal settings, they fell short of adequately equipping them for real-world interactions in the intended social settings. Hence, it is suggested that authentic, real-life conversation be incorporated into the IFL materials to meet the diverse practical communication needs of IFL learners.

Abstract

Teaching Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA) should be designed to be contextual and communicative to effectively address learners' needs in language skills, particularly reading and speaking. This study aims to develop a thematic-based learning model that integrates local Indonesian wisdom to enhance reading and speaking skills among Grade 7 students. The research employed a development research method following the Dick and Carey instructional design model. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and language skill tests. The results indicated that the model was effective in improving students' reading comprehension, speaking confidence, and interest in Indonesian cultural content. There was a significant increase in students' average scores after the implementation of the model. Thus, integrating thematic content and local cultural values into BIPA learning proved to be an effective strategy to enhance students' language skills while fostering meaningful appreciation of Indonesian culture.

Abstract

This study aims to test the effectiveness of the audiolingual model assisted by podcast media in improving the listening skills of grade X students at Estv President Nicolau Lobato, Timor Leste. This study's background is the EFL students' low listening ability caused by limited vocabulary, difficulty understanding native speaker speech, and the lack of authentic media in learning. The research method uses a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test–post-test control group model. The sample consists of two classes: the experimental group taught with the audiolingual model assisted by podcasts and the control group with conventional methods. The instrument, in the form of a listening test, was validated by experts and tested for reliability using the Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. Data analysis was carried out with descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and inferential (paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test) at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group. The mean pre-test score of Instrument A (Greetings and Greetings) of 5.88 increased to 7.60 in the post-test (t = -19.34; p < 0.05), while Instrument B (Introductions) increased from 2.84 to 3.73 (t = -8.82; p < 0.05). The independent sample t-test results also showed a significant difference between the two instruments in the post-test (t = 22.13; p < 0.05). These findings support the behaviourist theory that emphasises the importance of drill and stimulus–response and the linguistic input theory that highlights the benefits of repeated exposure to authentic language. Thus, the combination of audiolingual and podcast models has been proven effective in improving listening skills while being relevant to the EFL context of developing countries.
