Abstract

This article discusses how a speaker should recognize refusals of requests in English. The choices of whether or not uttering refusals or the selection of expressions to be used in uttering the refusals could disrupt or maintain the interaction with language in progress. Therefore, a discussion on related theories needs to be presented in this article in the effort as to provide insights of significant aspects in uttering refusals of requests. It is a descriptive discussion that it only presents arguments on speech acts of refusals by reviewing its related theories. Speech Acts of Refusals  ( SARs ) may gain much attention in the discussion since it is the central focus of the discussion. Conversational Principles and Face Threatening Acts of Politeness Theory are also touched because they also help the speaker to think of how to utter refusals of requests. Thought Patterns, on another side, culturally and pragmatically color the manner a speaker should utter refusals of requests in a given cultural context. Finally, the discussion also presents the degree of sensitiveness to social status, social distance and gender between the interlocutors in expressing refusals since those factors influence the choices of expressions of refusals.Key words: Speech Acts of Refusals  ( SARs ) , Conversational Principles, FTA in Politeness Theory, Thought Patterns.

Abstract

There are three strands of meanings believed to be communicated in every single utterance uttered by a speaker Hallidays (1994). This article, therefore, tries to explain how a speaker’s inner or outer world of experience, one of the three strands of meaning, is interpersonally negotiated. The metalanguage used to construe an interaction with language will be explained in detail. A sample analysis is also provided to accompany the construal of how interpersonal interaction with language occurs.   Key words: metafunctions, interpersonal meaning, interaction with language, role in exchange.

Abstract

The study on lexical density (LD) and grammatical intricacy (GI) is aimed at construing: (1) the LD index of the texts of English textbooks for sixth graders; (2) the GI index of the texts of English textbooks for sixth graders; and (3) whether both indices are tolerable. The data of this study are all the texts of the textbooks presumably being used by Semarang sixth graders. The results are: (1) the LD index is 0.54; (2) the GI index is 1.19; and (3) both LD and GI indices are significantly low. Pedagogically, the results imply that the texts may easily be comprehended by Semarang sixth graders, although, some of the reading texts are written in complex sentences. This, somehow, creates a difficulty on the part of the students. However, in order to justify whether a text is really useful, a further researcher could provide information pertaining to the readability and the generic structure potential of the text. Key words: lexical density, grammatical intricacy, content words, running words.

Abstract

Teaching how to write (a discussion) in a foreign language context is not an easy task due to the different levels, motivation, and experience of the target language. However the development of genre literacy has recently provided an attempt to create a new pedagogical space in the writing classroom. It is, therefore, this article elaborates how one should develop a genre-based model for teaching how to write a discussion by employing its social function, generic structure, lexicogrammatical features, and the teaching cycles.   Key words: genre-based, social function, generic structure, lexicogrammatical features, and teaching cycles.

Abstract

This study examines the pattern of thematic progression (TP) in the abstracts written by English students of FBIB Unisbank Semarang. Twenty five abstracts are randomly taken from which the sentences are analyzed to show their thematic patterning. The theory proposed by Danes (1974) was used as the framework to analyze the pattern employed in the abstracts and the result of which indicates that the split rheme TP pattern (77%) is realized in the abstracts and theme-derived TP pattern (23%) is also noticed. The study also describes that the link between linguistic thematic progression and the messages is characterized by the use of speech functions (SF) as declarations (33%), representatives (50%) and directives (17%). It is sufficient to say that students display good experience in writing their abstracts but to further justify that the abstracts are standard ones future researchers may conduct similar studies by employing more data and schematic structure analysis on abstracts. Key words: thematic progression, abstract, speech function

Abstract

This study attempts to construe (1) the appraisal devices recognized in the “The Asean Cage” text? (2) how the readers may be positioned in the text. When a categorical technique based on Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005) was applied, the writers found out that the editorial text displays appraisal devices in different percentages (Affect-Attitude (3.03%), Judgment-Attitude (45.45%) and Appreciation-Attitude (51.52%); Mono-glossic-Engagement (0%), Dialogic Contraction-Engagement (58.3%) and Dialogic Expansion-Engagement (41.7%); Force-Graduation (97.8%) and Focus-Graduation (2.2%). Based on the analysis of Appraisal System, the readers may be positioned as those who accept the editor’s assessment about the condition between Indonesia and ASEAN. Key words: Editorial, Appraisal System, Attitude, Engagement, Graduation

Abstract

A study on error in English language use has long been conducted by different researchers and in different settings (Richards 1971; Nemser 1971; Selinker 1972; Brown 1994; Ellis 1995). Different English educational institutions continuously conduct similar studies mainly because they do not only want to identify linguistic problems encountered by their students and to account for their language development but they also want to benefit from the necessary information they may use to better the learning materials (Farooq 1998; Bartlett 2002). In this study the writer investigated grammatical errors as encountered in students’ spoken English. Thirty English students of the Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies Stikubank University were randomly asked to speak about any issue they were interested in. This was recorded and the data were transcribed and categorized under (1) the type of grammatical errors, (2) problem areas, (3) Selinker’s error categories (1972) and (4) semantic impacts. The most problems encountered by the students are as follows: verb phrase (24.6%), syntax (78.7%), transfer of training and strategy of language learning (77.1%) and local semantic impact (92.6%). Key words: grammatical error, error category, problem area, semantic impact

Abstract

A Friday Sermon delivery is a strategic mechanism for a Khatib (Preacher) to disseminate the divine truths—either from the quran, hadiths, Ijma’, or qiyas, and to convey the rights and responsibilities of Islam followers in respect to religious, social, economic and even political affairs. It is the language that plays a very significant role in encoding the Khatib’s messages. Therefore a Khatib (or any institution) preparing a sermon text needs to equip himself with a communication system in order to encode his social purposes. The system may prevent him from abusing the language to provoke the jama’ah (congregation). It may also lead him to use appropriate linguistic features to support the purposes, and to organize the purposes into a culturally recognized pattern or schematic structure to indicate that a sermon is different from other genres. To understand and describe the system we need to conduct a genre analysis on Friday Sermons using the model genre analysis offered by Eggins and Slade (1997). The English Friday sermons prepared by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore were chosen and used as the model sermons to portray how purposes were encoded and organized into a particular generic structure potential.   Key Words: Communication system, Social/Communicative Purpose, Linguistic Features, Schematic Structure, Genre analysis, Generic Structure Potential

Abstract

The study is aimed at describing the politeness strategies, explaining the degree of directness, and FTA potential of the utterances adopted in the model conversations of English textbooks for sixth graders in Semarang. The findings indicate that (1) the model conversations display doing no FTA, FTA off Record, Neg FTA Bald on Record and Pos FTA Bald on Record as the politenesss strategies with doing no FTA as the dominant strategy. (2) The utterances in the model conversations tend to be direct. (3) Some utterances contain FTA potentials. In order to justify whether the conversations are appropriate or not, a further study needs to be conducted with respect to the organization of conversation, thus genre or coherency, turn taking organization, and other variables such as the social status of the participants, gender, time force, circumstances, etc. Key words: politeness strategy, FTA, model conversation.
