Abstract

This article is a short and simple discussion of how someone should use Systemic Coder in order to linguistically analyze a text. Understanding of certain linguistic theories is a must for those who may conduct a linguistic analysis with this product of computational linguistics. They must decide the unit of analysis, design the scheme, do the coding, and provide the interpretation, which are all based on linguistic theories. Explanation of how Systemic Coder is applied in order to help interprete a text and the SFG-based interpretation of text is provided in the discussion. Key words: Systemic Coder, linguistic interpretation, computational linguistics, SFG

Abstract

This paper is aimed at construing the turn-taking system organized by the host and guests in Let them speak talkshow which was broadcast on First Channel Russia TV in  December 5th, 2014. The results indicate that the speakers tend to employ the turns in terms of sentences (114 units). The speakers managed their turns by selecting a different speaker (47 units), continuing one’s own turn (75 units), and selecting the next speaker him/herself (29 units). With respect to turn-taking strategy, the speaker tend to employ clean start (16 units), uptake (33 units), link (11 units), alert (10 units), meta-comment (16 units), and new start (12 units). The analyzed data also reveals that some participants seem to properly organize their turns dominantly in sentences, by employing next speaker self-select technique, and in clean starts, uptakes, and meta-comments. Key words: turn-taking system, turn, turn-taking strategy, clean start, uptake, meta-comment

Abstract

This study is aimed at: (1) construing the pattern at which the children’s English syntax develops; (2) explaining children’s mean length of utterance (MLU). The data were downloaded from YouTube.com. Categorical analysis was applied in order to achieve the objectives of this study. The findings indicate that (1) the pattern at which the children’s English syntax develops could be traced from three different phases: (a) linguistically unpatterned, as the language interaction does not exist yet. The children’s daily activities relate to opening mouth, closing mouth, yawning, blinking, moving head, and non-speech activities (crying, producing speech-like sounds: hee…, eeg…eeg), (b) simple linguistic pattern, as the language interactions are in the forms of babbling (ta ta ta), holophrase (doll) and two-word expression (Daddy go). They are also accompanied with non-speech activities (laughing, screaming, and producing speech-like sounds: heee, he he, eh eh, aahh, uuh, uum), and (c) linguistically patterned, as the language interaction is created in true speech – complete utterances with (a) subject-finite elements, (b) various sentence types, (c) various language functions and speech acts. (2) the MLUs of the true speech created by children are 3,57 (three years), 5,09 (four years), and 7,53 (five years). Keywords: syntax, MLU, linguistically unpatterned, simple linguistic pattern, linguistically patterned, babbling, holophrase, two-word expression, true speech

Abstract

This study is aimed at (1) construing qualitatively the need for developing of alistening model for their twelfth graders; (2) designing a listening model whichcould be attached to a web – e-learning system. The researchers also quantitativelyanalyze the index of difficulty and that of discriminating power; (3) construing theresponses of the English teachers and their twelfth graders towards the designedlistening model. The results indicate that teachers really need a listening modeldesigned on the bases of the present curriculum. Secondly, the model can beimplementable and executable though with moderate difficulty index and low indexof discriminating power. Finally, it is known that the English teachers display theirpositive attitude towards the model. However, the twelfth graders do not indicatetheir positive attitude towards it.Key words: listening model, e-learning, discriminating power, index of difficultylevel

Abstract

The study construes the types of politeness strategies reflected in the show and the factors that might influence the choice of the strategies. The theory of politeness strategies as proposed by Brown & Levinson (1987) was applied in order to analyze the data. The results indicate that the show demonstrates the application of bald on record (8), positive politeness (181), negative politeness (14), and off record strategies (6). The factors that might influence the selection of the strategies are the payoffs, which means considering the advantages in gaining satisfaction and respect from the speakers. The circumstances deal with the distance, power and ranking of imposition. The distance between the speakers is low as they are friends, or at least they come from the same background - entertainment. The host has more power as he rules the conversations. The topic discussed was not a heavy topic, so the possibility of threatening other’s face might not be that significant.Key words: politeness strategies, talk show
