Abstract

Abstract

Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) is the third largest protected area in Sumatra.  Unfortunately, the area is invaded by Merremia peltata which occupied  about  7 000 ha. The aims of this study was to determine the ecological impacts of  M. peltata on plant biodiversity at BBSNP. Three locations were selected for vegetation analysis and M.peltata invasion assessment on the vegetation composition in BBSNP, i.e. the primary forest representing undisturbed area, secondary forest representing burned area, and invaded forest representing forest invaded by M. peltata. Three line transects  were constructed at each locations along1 km, and  the nested sampling plots were constructed every 100 m with the following quadrants : 20 m x 20 m for trees, 10 m  x 10 m for poles, 5 m  x 5 m for sapling, and 2 m x 2 m for seedling. The data collected were invasions of M. peltata, trees species, and diameter of the trees.  Invaded forest has lower diversity index (1.90)  than the other two. This caused by the invasion of M. peltata as the percentage of coverage in the invaded forest reached 44% compared to secondary and the primary forest which were  27.11% and 1.00%. It is evidenced by the correlation between the percentage of coverage M. peltata and diversity index (-0.988).

Abstract

Butterflies are diurnal animals, divided into six families which are Hesperiidae, Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, and Riodinidae. Butterflies can be found in any vegetation as long as their host and feed plants are available. Batutegi protected forest has the potential to be butterflies habitat due to the possibility of its richness of host and feed plants. The research was conducted to analyze butterflies diversity and abundance in three different types of vegetation which are shrubs, forest, and Way Sekampung watershed. The methods that used are Shannon-Wiener’s Diversity Index (H’), Simpson’s dominance index (D), and Pielou’s Evenness Index (E). Analysis shows the butterfly diversity up to 3.034; dominance index up to 0.079; and evenness up to 0.823. These results attributed to the highly potential of butterfly diversity, stable evenness, and low butterfly species dominance. Analysis of diversity index in three vegetation obtained result H’ = 3.034 shows that the butterfly community is stable. The evenness index showed a high value E = 0.823 means that the individual of each type is evenly distributed. The dominance index obtained a low value D = 0.079 indicates that no particular type dominates all vegetation.

Abstract

As an additional nutrient that can enhance plant fertility, fertilizer is a crucial factor in achieving plant productivity. One type of fertilizer that is good to use is organic fertilizer, which is derived from the fermentation or composting of plant and animal residues. Organic fertilizer can be made at home using household organic waste. In Pisang Baru Village, a considerable amount of banana stem waste is often discarded by the community. Based on this condition, this activity is aimed at providing training and understanding to the community of Pisang Baru Village regarding liquid organic fertilizer from banana stem waste. The activity is conducted through presentations, hands-on practice, and discussions with participants who are members of farmer groups. The results of this activity indicate that farmers who participated in the training show a high level of interest in using organic fertilizer on their agricultural land, which has the potential to realize sustainable agriculture through the use of organic fertilizers.
