Abstract

This study applies Almost Ideal Demand System models to examine Indonesia’s competitiveness as a tourist destination compared to two main competitor countries. The model was used to estimate the sensitivity of tourism demand from seven tourist-main market countries to price changes, the tourists’ total budget and global economic crisis. The model estimated result meets the assumptions of the demand theory: homogeneity and symmetry. The elasticity price shows that Indonesia is more competitive than Thailand among Australian and American tourists; while Indonesia is more competitive than Malaysia among American tourists. The research result also shows that the tourism price is the main determinant affecting the allocation of tourist expenditure in the three destinations.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a decline in social welfare. In such a situation, community philanthropy, including from the Muslim community, becomes critical. This study aims to explore the charitable behavior of Muslims in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tobit regression was used to analyze data from online surveys to determine the pattern changes of donations during the pandemic as well as the factors affecting the amount of donation. This study uncovered that Zakat Management Organizations (BAZNAS and LAZ) were some of the main choices for distributing zakat and alms (sedekah) during the pandemic. It was found that the factors with a positive and significant effect on the probability of increasing the percentage of donations were education, length of stay, and expenses. The results of this study contribute to the policy of developing the Zakat Management Organization as institutions trusted by the community in distributing zakat funds. This study supports the fundraising of the zakat organizations in terms of offering valuable insights and clear description about the Indonesian people’s charitable behavior. More importantly, this study suggests that improving the quality of education is crucial to increase community awareness in performing Islamic philanthropy such as giving zakat, sedekah, and waqf.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on various sectors in Indonesia, one of which is the tourism sector. This stems from the policies carried out by the government in the form of travel bans to closing hotels which have reduced the supply and demand of domestic and international tourism which has led to the stagnation of the tourism industry. As a result, many workers in the tourism sector are affected, ranging from layoffs to reduced income. This study aims to find out how the impact and adaptation of the tourism sector workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic was extended to the analysis of labor migration in the tourism sector affected by the COVID-19 pandemic using SAKERNAS data in August 2020 and survey data on labor conditions. The results of the study show that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on tourism sector employment in the form of layoffs, changes in types of work to a decrease in income. Various alternatives in doing business to increase additional income or in the field of work have been carried out by workers as an adaptation step to new conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
