Abstract

Rambu-rambu Village is one of the villages clustered within the Tumbuh Lestari rural area of North Konawe District. The main purpose of this project was to empower the coastal community groups in Rambu-rambu Village through the introduction of in-cage verticulture farming of seaweed. The project was carried out within the scheme of Community Service Program (PKM/Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat) funded by the University of Halu Oleo. The project lasted for 30 days from 29 June to 28 July 2019. The activity consisted of three stages, are initial dissemination activity, preparation of the training, and implementation of training of seaweed culture. The project involved 20 students of the University of Halu Oleo and 42 people from fishermen, fisherme wifes, and farmer groups. Before the training was conducted 66.7% of the participants did not have the knowledge and after the training 71.4% of the respondents gained an understanding regarding the seaweed verticulture farming method. The improvement of skill was also evident where before the training, 81% of the participants were not able to do seaweed farming method and after the training, 61.9% of the participants were capable or skilled of repeating the seaweed verticulture method. The increased knowledge of the participants could be described from their ability to clearly explain types of seaweed species used, the benefits of seaweed, and the characteristics of high quality of seaweed seed. The improved skill of the participants were also observed from their skill in constructing the seaweed raft and seaweed net cage, tying up the seaweed seed, and conducting the observation of water quality condition in the location of seaweed farming. The result of this activity showed an increased of knowledge and skill of the trained participants regarding seaweed farming using verticulture method.

Abstract

Knowledge of food and feeding strategies are essential to understand the ecological role and productive capacity of fish populations. This information is critical for development of conservation and management plans of fishery resources. This study aimed to analyze the food and feeding strategy of sunrise goatfish in Kendari bay. Sampling was done monthly from May to November 2016, with bottom experimental gillnets with mesh size ¾, 1, 1 ¼, and 1 ½ inches. The food habits was analyzed using index of preponderance; while feeding strategy was determined by Amundsen modified Costello method. There were 386 fish with total length and weight ranged from 46.0-176.0 mm and 3.0-67.1 g, res-pectively. The fish were categorized into 3 groups based on the length sizes. The length sizes were classified into small size (45.0-69.7 mm), medium size (69.8-94.3 mm) and large size (94.4-119.0 mm). Twenty eight species of organisms were found in the digestive system of the sunrise goatfish dominated by the phytoplankton genus Thallasiothrix. The sunrise goatfish has significant dietary changes with increasing total length and time. The sunrise goatfish developed mix feeding strategies; specialist and generalist. Generalist strategy developed for all prey, except Thallasiothrix obtained by spesialist strategy.

Abstract

Eutrofication is an increase of nutrient supply (nitrogen and phosphor) to a very high concentration and above the limit that the nature can cope with. This recent research was aimed to predict the eutrofication  of the waters based on the distribution of nutrients and chlorophyll-a and conducted on November 2012. The research was carried out by considering two main parameters which were main research parameters and supporting parameter over physical, chemical and biological variables. The main research parameters consisted of total N and P, chlorophyll-a and dissolved oxygen of which those variables were the main variables used in the TRIX index analysis (an index used to characterized the trophic status of a body of waters). The fertility status of Kendari Bay based on TRIX index was categorized as eutrophic having TRIX index of 5.12. It is confirmed that the level of nutrient (TN and TP), chlorophyl-a and water clarity determines the fertility status of a water body ranging from oligotrophic to hypertrophic.

Abstract

Abstract. Asriyana A, Irawati N, Halili H. 2020. Length-weight relationships and ponderal index of three reef fish (Teleostei: Labridae) off the Tanjung Tiram coast, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1279-1286. Parameters of length-weight relationship and ponderal index were estimated for first time for three reef fish (Labridae), Cheilinus trilobatus, Cheilinus chlorourus, and Choerodon anchorago, off the Tanjung Tiram coast, Indonesia. A total of 292 specimens (C. trilobatus 146 specimens; C. chlorourus 100 specimens; C. anchorago 46 specimens) were collected monthly in experimental gillnets in coral reefs and seagrass beds from January to June 2018. The length-weight relationship and ponderal index were calculated for each species. C. trilobatus showed total length and weight of 9.0-17.2 cm and 12.33-78.79 g, respectively, while C. chlorourus was 8.5-17.5 cm and 10.41-100.21 g, and C. anchorago 9.0-27.0 cm and 18.51-414.00 g. C. trilobatus showed negative allometric growth, while C. chlorourus and C. anchorago had isometric growth. The length-weight relationship of C. trilobatus followed the linear equation of W=0.10TL2.35, while C. chlorourus and C. anchorago fit to W=0.03TL2.83; W=0.03TL2.91 respectively. The highest ponderal index occurred in May for C. trilobatus and in June for C. chlorourus and C. anchorago indicating a peak of the spawning season. The study results could be used as baseline information for future fisheries management of the area.
