Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an incurable disease which causes disability and death. The main pathogenesis of COPD is oxidative stress due to cigarette smoke which initiates various reactions and lead to lung elastic fibers destruction. Statins are known to have antioxidant effects and reduce mortality in COPD. We studied the effects of cigarette smoke exposure cessation and rosuvastatin on oxidative stress and the level of elastic fiber destruction in COPD model rats. Thirty 10-week old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups: Control (n=6, did not received fumigation nor treatment) and Smoking (n=24, received fumigation for 70 days) groups. Afterwards, the smoking group was divided into 4 groups: Sham, R2, R5,R10, and received 0.9% NaCl, 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg/day of rosuvastatin, respectively. Examination of malondialdehyde (MDA) and desmosine serum were conducted to measure oxidative stress and elastic fiber degradation level, respectively. After smoke exposure, MDA and desmosine levels of COPD rats were found to be significantly higher (p=0.000 and 0.000) than controls. The MDA level in Sham, R2, R5 and R10 groups decreased significantly after therapy (p=0.000; 0.033; 0.015; 0.002). However, the post-treatment desmosine level was increase significantly in Sham and R2 groups (p=0.006 dan 0.012) and insignificantly (p=0.117 dan 0.278) in the R5 and R10 groups. It can be concluded that the cessation of exposure to cigarette smoke can reduce oxidative stress, but not elastic degradation process. The administration of rosuvastatin of 5 or 10 mg/kg/day attenuated elastic degradation process.

Abstract

Polyherbal formulation (PHF) containing extracts of Sauropus androgynous, Trigonella foenum-graceum and Moringa oleifera has been proven can induce milk production in animal model. However, its molecular of action has not been elucidated, yet. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the PHF on the mRNA expressions of α-actin smooth muscle (ACTA2) and cytokeratin 14 (CK14) on the myoepithelial cells of the lactating rats mammary glands. Thirty female Wistar rats were divided into five groups with six of each. Group I was orally administered aquadest. Group II, III, and IV rats were orally administered the PHF at dose level of 26.25, 52.5, and 105 mg/kg once a day, for 15 days, respectively. Group V was orally administered 2.7 mg domperidone. On 16th day, rats were sacrificed. Mammary glands were isolated and processed for mRNA expression analysis using real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The results demonstrated that the mRNA expression of ACTA2 and CK14 increased in dose-dependent manner in the groups of PHF. Significantly different between the Group III, IV, and V compared to Group I was observed (p < 0.05). However, there was no significantly different between Group IV and Group V (p>0.05). In conclusion, the PHF increases the mRNA expression of ACTA2 and CK14 on myoepithelial cells of the mammary glands on lactating rats.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic worsened the physical inactivity pandemic and also increased sedentary behavior across the population, including university students. While physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are detrimental to health and academic performance, there is an urgent need to help university students to adopt an active lifestyle during post-pandemic life. This narrative review discussed current physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior recommendations, practical tips for adopting an active lifestyle by applying PA doses using the frequency, intensity, time, and type (FITT) principle, and behavioral strategies to adopt and maintain an active lifestyle. Finally, several considerations related to the PA-related musculoskeletal injury and cardiovascular events risks were also discussed with examples from interventions during the pandemic in university settings.

Abstract

One of the activity programs that students at UMY University Residence (UNIRES) must complete within the first year is memorizing Al-Qur'an juz 30. Physical fitness has been linked to good memorization abilities and improving overall cognitive function. More evidence is needed to see how fitness level influences the ability to memorize Al-Qur'an, especially among students. This research aimed to determine the effect of providing an aerobic fitness program on the ability of UNIRES students to memorize Al-Qur'an. The quasi-experimental pre-post test research method without a control group involving 29 participants was conducted; it consisted of 15 male and 14 female residents of UNIRES, who were taken using convenience sampling. The intervention was an aerobic exercise fitness program guided by an instructor, which is carried out every two days for 30 minutes for 14 days and can be followed independently via the YouTube link provided. The fitness test is carried out using the 6-minute walk test method, given before and after students are given aerobic treatment and determined by measuring VO2 max. Participants were asked to memorize Al-Qur'an Surah An Nisaa verse 23 and measured the duration of memorization. This verse was chosen because of the trickiness and complexity level of the words; there are several similar words/sentences repeated (words ending in تُكُمْ) in the verse. The average VO2 max before and after intervention was 40.97 ± 9.87 and 42.68 ± 5.00, while memorization ability was 2,496.21 ± 1,654.53 seconds and 1,162.62 ± 726.33 seconds. There was no significant difference in VO2max before and after training with p 0.508, greater than 0.05. Conclusion: No significant correlation exists between memorization time and VO2max, either before or after training. The interventions need to be extended to get more optimal results, and the number of participants needs to be increased, besides the involvement of a control group.
