Abstract

Most students have learned English since elementary school. However, after learning English for many years their English skills are still less than satisfactory. Well .. Why does it happen? There are several possibilities where they feel no importance of English. Some of them also only learn English to meet the demands of the task and get the value. Therefore, this study tries to investigate students' motivation in learning English, especially intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This research was conducted with questionnaire and interview. Participants are a number of students at a course. The results of this study prove that most students have more extrinsic motivation than intrinsic and they also have a positive attitude in learning English.

Abstract

Writing still becomes a big problem for students, especially for young learner students. They thought that writing is the most difficult skill compared the other language skills.  This study was conducted by using qualitative method in order to give more description about students’ writing problems.  Twelve elementary school students in the fifth grade were chosen purposely as participants. The data were collected by observing students and teacher activities in the classroom. Then, some students were interviewed to get further explanation about their problems. After that, students’ writing were analyzed . The result of this study confirmed that students has problem in spelling words, grammar and choosing vocabularies.  It is expected this research will help teacher in developing available strategies for teaching writing and can be a basic information for further research.Key words: writing, English writing, young learners

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of language components that are important in English. This research was designed to analyze the inhibit factors of students’ English vocabulary mastery. The objective of the research is to analyze and find the inhibit factors of vocabulary mastery that experienced by the students. The method used in this research was qualitative method. While the approach that used here was case study approach. The researcher took the subject of the research from seventh graders of Global Junior High School in academic year 2017/2018. In this research, the data collection methods were used observation, questionnaire, and interview. Observation process was done when the teacher was teaching in the class. Questionnaire was given to all the students in seventh grade in Global Junior High School. Whereas Interview was done to the six randomly selected students and one English teacher. From the result of the analysis from the four instruments, the researcher found many inhibit factors that happen to the students, such as: similarity to English words already known, spelling and pronunciation, and appropriate use. The result of the research is expected to be used as reference or idea to create or develop further research. This research also can be used as reference or consideration to the institution or the teacher to improve the learning and teaching technique that can improve the students’ vocabularies
