Abstract

In our daily life, almost all the items we used, being a computer, television, lift or vehicle we drive consist of some kind of electrical or electronics component inside. The operation of these devices could be severely affected by lightning activity or electrical switching events, as there are more than 2000 thunderstorms in progress at any time resulting in 100 lightning flashes to ground per second. In practice, any device using electricity will subject to surge damages induced from the lightning or switching of heavy load. Surge protection device (SPD) is added at the power distribution panel and critical process loop to prevent damage subsequently cause plant shutdown. There are many questions raised on the SPD. How can this small device protect the equipment from large energy release by the lightning? What is inside the device? How does it work? This paper provides comprehensive detail in revealing the science and engineering behind the SPD, its individual component characteristic and how does it work. The technical information presented is limited to surge protection on equipment; surge protection for building structure will not be discussed here.

Abstract

The proposed scheme is employed for the efficient operation of a DC-DC-based buck converter. This protection scheme shows the optimal placement of a varistor in the power electronics converter side under different surge conditions. Advanced varistors have excellent electrical material properties and electrothermal behavior for the enhancement of power absorption capability. Varistors have been examined widely in the last four decades that are employed for surge protection applications. The advantage of power surge protection using varistor-based power devices is vital due to the great sensitivity of the equipment integrated into the grid and emerging power electronics-based DC systems with low and high voltage ratings. In this research, a varistor can be placed to protect the switching devices such as MOSFETs in power electronic-based buck converter side due to uncertain overvoltage under differential surge. The proposed MATLAB simulation study shows the peak voltage stress on the grid due to the surge and its enhancement scheme.

Abstract

The extensive use of power electronic converters in the third rail system increases the harmonic distortions on the rail electrical feeding systems. Electrical machines and transformers could be overheated causing premature failures of the devices. It is therefore important to address the harmonic distortions on the electrical networks during real-time operation, which includes the degraded operation, not just the normal operation. In this paper, the harmonic distortions of a third rail system are investigated using electrical transient and analysis program (ETAP) simulation software. Four operating scenarios, namely the normal operation and three degraded operations, are considered in the studies. The degraded operations occur when one of the bulk supply transformers or 33 kV feeders is out of service. The findings of the studies showed that the 11th and 13th order harmonics are the dominant harmonic orders due to the use of 12-pulse rectifiers on the third rail system. Single-tuned harmonic filters are designed and placed in the 33 kV feeders to mitigate the individual voltage harmonic distortion (IHDv) and the total voltage harmonic distortion (THDv) so that it is within the statutory of IEEE 519:2014.
