Abstract

Literacy skills of Indonesian students in every level are still low compared to other ASIAN countries. To overcome this problem, Indonesian government has developed many programs in improving literacy skills. However, the program has not given significant result since it is only done in formal school. Whereas current studies show that children developed the embryonic knowledge that leads to official literacy skills in their early childhood period at home and Early Childhood Education centre long before they enter formal school. Therefore, it is needed comprehend studies of early literacy development program in Indonesian setting involving the family and society to improve the literacy skills of the children. Therefore, this study describes strategies to strengthen literacy practices for children at home setting and society in one of Indonesian villages through Participatory Action Research (PAR) method. Focus group discussion (FGD) which involved 30 parents, 3 kindergarten teachers and 3 childrens as participants becomes the main technique in gathering the data. In addition, interview was also conducted to get deeper information from particular participant. Furthermore, based on FGD, there are some factors that could strengthening literacy practices for the children such as, good library facilities, varied and sustainable library programs, improving parents’ skills on literacy stimulation techniques for children and providing literacy community at rural area level. Moreover, as a result of FGD activities, the participants and facilitators developed a program called “Pohon Literasi (Literacy Tree).” Then, this program was implemented in three cycles. Each cycle took one week period of implementation. In conclusion, this program could increase reading interest of children and family members.

Abstract

This paper is a part of a bigger research about the implementation of story project that attempts to develop children’s critical literacy skill. The discussion in this paper focuses at the implementation of Sundanese story dictation on a 5-year-old child. The present study aims to identify the process of the story dictation, which is conducted for the very first time as a method to help children in expressing their own-created stories. Case study was employed as the research method. The subject of the present study was a 5-year-old boy who speaks Sundanese fluently and can express his ideas orally, in an kindergarten in Kabupaten Bandung. Story dictation was the method used to enable the subject to create a Sundanese story. The data were collected through video-tapped observation, in-depth interview and teacher’s field notes during the process of story dictation. Subsequently, the collected data were analysed. The finding revealed that the subject was able to complete the process of the story dictation voluntarily and could express his own story fluently. The investigation has shown that the created story can be categorised as a very good one.

Abstract

Parenting has a very important role in the growth and development of children. This paper examines the application of parenting education for Indonesians abroad. This activity involved 14 participants from the Indonesian School of Davao, Philippines. The method used is Participatory Action Research (PAR), which is carried out in a participatory manner with the aim of encouraging changes in the living conditions of participants for the better. The implementation of parenting education in the digital era uses synchronous modes through video conference platforms and asynchronous through the use of websites. The results of this activity showed a positive response from the participants and shared perceptions regarding the importance of care in families and schools, especially for the development of children's character.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh permasalahan mengenai kemampuan berbicara anak yang belum berkembang di kelas B1 KOBER-TK Ananda Desa Palasari Kecamatan Cibiru Kota Bandung. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh gambaran hasil kemampuan berbicara anak dalam menceritakan kembali dengan metode show and tell. Penelitian ini melibatkan sembilan orang anak sebagai partisipan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan dengan model Pelton (2010) yang terdiri dari 3 tindakan, setiap tindakan terdiri dari 5 langkah yang meliputi identifikasi masalah, pengumpulan data, perencanaan tindakan, pelaksanaan tindakan serta penilaian hasil (refleksi). Kemampuan berbicara yang diteliti pada penelitian ini berfokus pada kemampuan anak dalam menceritakan kembali dengan standar keberhasilan yang dicapai pada setiap tindakannya yaitu menceritakan kembali benda atau hasil karya dengan menyebutkan 3 ciri benda. Hasil penelitian tindakan ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan berbicara anak dalam menceritakan kembali benda atau hasil karyanya meningkat dari tindakan 1 hingga tindakan 3. Pada tindakan pertama, jumlah anak yang mampu menceritakan kembali benda atau hasil karya dengan menyebutkan 3 ciri benda sebanyak 1 orang (12,5%) untuk tindakan 1. Untuk tindakan 2 jumlah anak yang mampu menceritakan kembali benda atau hasil karya dengan menyebutkan 3 ciri benda sebanyak 3 orang (50%). Untuk tindakan 3 jumlah anak yang mampu menceritakan kembali benda atau hasil karya dengan menyebutkan 3 ciri benda sebanyak 8 orang (100%). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, metode show and tell dapat dijadikan sebagai salah satu alternatif dalam mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara anak usia dini.Kata Kunci : Metode Show and Tell, Kemampuan Berbicara Anak, Kemampuan Menceritakan Kembali
