Abstract

This study aims to determine learning difficulties based on students' understanding of protist material for class X IPA in SMA Negeri in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, and the main factors causing students' learning difficulties. The research method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. The sample of this study was taken at random, amounting to five schools. The data collection technique used is a two-tier multiple-choice diagnostic test instrument to identify students' learning difficulties and a questionnaire instrument to determine the causes of students' learning difficulties. The results showed that learning difficulties from the highest to the lowest were analyzing the basic grouping of protists, understanding how protists reproduce, recognizing protist objects, explaining the morphological characteristics of protists, and understanding the role of protists in protists life and grouping protists into several classes. The main factors causing student learning difficulties are the facilities and infrastructure and the nature of the protist material. Good planning of practicum activities, selection of appropriate learning methods, and linking learning to everyday life must be done by teachers to help overcome student learning difficulties.

Abstract

Textbook plays a crucial role in enhancing students' scientific literacy skills. This study aims to evaluate the level of scientific literacy in the biology textbook for Grade XI based on four aspects: scientific knowledge, nature of scientific inquiry, science as a way of thinking, and the interaction between science, technology, and society. Three biology textbooks for Grade XI used in the Medan Tembung district, North Sumatra, were randomly selected, namely Bumi Aksara, PT Tiga Serangkai, and Grafindo Media Pratama. The results of the study indicate that the proportions of scientific literacy aspects in these three textbooks are unbalanced. The aspect of scientific knowledge shows a good percentage (81.42% for Bumi Aksara, 72.90% for PT Tiga Serangkai, and 70.88% for Grafindo). However, the aspects of the nature of scientific inquiry, science as a way of thinking, and the interaction between science, technology, and society have poor percentages for all evaluated textbooks. Therefore, the appropriate selection of textbooks by teachers is crucial in improving students' scientific literacy skills.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by animated videos on science learning outcomes in the topic of the Human Respiratory System among eighth-grade students at SMP Imelda Medan. The population of this research comprised all eighth-grade students at SMP Imelda Medan. The sample classes were selected using random sampling, with two classes chosen as the sample. This study employed a quantitative research method, specifically a quasi-experimental approach with a Pretest-Posttest Nonequivalent Control Group Design. Data collection techniques included pre-research observation, interviews with science teachers of grade VIII, written multiple-choice tests for students, and documentation during the research. Data analysis was conducted using hypothesis testing (one-tailed t-test). These data indicate that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by animated videos significantly improves students' learning outcomes of eighth-grade students at SMP Imelda Medan on the topic of the human respiratory system.
