Abstract

This research discussed about Feminismin both selected novels PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color Purplewhich aimed at finding out the types offeminism, reason why can the figure ofwomen struggle of feminisms and the roleof women in both of the selected novels.This research was based on Tong’s theory.This research was conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative method. The datawere taken from both selected novelswhich have feminisms, they arePerempuan Berkalung Sorban and TheColor Purple Novel. The findings showedthat there were 28 data, 24 data in types offeminism in Perempuan Berkalung Sorbanand The Color Purple Novel.The dominanttypes from both the novels is LiberalFeminisms in Perempuan BerkalungSorban Novel, because the first characterfrom Perempuan Berkalung Sorban Novelis Annisa who feels unfair treatment shereceives from her family;and there were 4data in the role of women in domesticsector can struggle in PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color PurpleNovel. The researcher concluded thesimilar types of feminism, they were:Liberal Feminism and Radical Feminism

Abstract

The research discussed identityconstruction built in the movie of Parasite through the nonverbal behaviors aspect. The aims of this study were to find out the types of identity construction reflected through non-verbal behaviors, how the identity reflected in the movie, and to find out the reasons of the emergence of identity construction in the movie. The descriptive qualitative method is being used in this research, and the data were derived from the Parasite movie’s screenshot. The findings of the study showed that: (1) There are three identities found they are person identities, role identities, and social identities. (2) The identity construction reflected through non-verbal behaviors are object, accessories, smells/body odor. (3) The significance of identity construction emergence in the movie is to shows that every detail used in people daily can form an identity, and because movies are one of the products that people consume the most, then this becomes very helpful in showing the realities of real life.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out how film adaptation from l novel Alice Adventures in Wonderland I (1865) to the film Alice Adventures in Wonderland I 2010. In terms of addition, subtraction, and variation on its inherent elements, In the study of scientific social problems, a descriptive qualitative design is used. The researcher discovered that the film had some addition, reduction, and variation changes. These changes are also felt by the readers as a result of the film. The research findings show that there are sixteen findings for film adaptation, three findings for plot, four findings for setting, and eight findings for characters, each of which are divided into intrinsic elements of film and novel Adventures in Wonderland  I.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the maxims flouted by the major characters, the realization of sarcasm based on the scene, and the reasons for sarcastic utterances found in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2” using a pragmatics study. The study was conducted using a textual research. The data of this study were taken from the transcripts of “How I Met Your Mother Season 2”. The data of this study were the sarcastic utterances that appeared in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2”. The data analysis was taken by coding and developing theme from the data based on the theory proposed by Braun and Clarke. The findings indicated that all four maxims were flouted by the major characters in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2”. In addition, there were several sarcastic utterances in which the characters flouted more than one maxim. Based on the research results, the most frequently flouted maxim was the maxim of quality. It could be seen that the situations in which sarcasm appeared in “How I Met Your Mother Season 2” mostly occurred at night. Then, it was also found that all purposes of sarcasm were present in the sarcastic utterances. There were even several sarcastic utterances which served more than one purpose. Sarcasm which served as an evaluation was most frequently used by the characters in order to hide the negative effects of their criticism and also to create the positive effects of their sarcastic praise towards their interlocutors

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Gender Inequality based on Gender Study of the main character in novel Kim Ji Young, Born 1982. This research was conducted by applying the textual analysis method. The data source is taken from the novel by Cho Nam Joo, entitled Kim Ji Young, Born 1982 which was translated into English by Jamie Chang. This study used the theory of Gender Inequality by Sylvia Walby (1990) and that there are 6 types of gender inequality, namely household production, paid work, the patriarchal state, male violence, sexuality and culture. The results show all types about gender inequality by Walby can be found in the novel and the main character struggles to face the inequality act that she experiences is the depression she experiences which changes her personality.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate the strategies used by the English teacher for teaching reading comprehension and to find out the reasons why teacher used those strategies in teaching reading comprehension of first grade students at SMK Swasta Tunas Karya Batang Kuis. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were two English teachers who teach at SMK Swasta Tunas Karya Batang Kuis, Deli Serdang especially at first grade students. The instruments of this study were recording, interview and documentation. The findings found that, the first teacher used two strategies, Scaffolding and QARs (Question Answer Relationship). Scaffolding strategy student can develop about idea which readable by the student. QARs (Question Answer Relationship), the teacher able to know how far their students understand what the teacher has given to them. The second teacher used conventional strategy. This strategy should be selected based on its appropriateness and effectiveness to the learning process so that its use will enable the teacher to explore the students’ ideas and to help them read in a better way. Based on the analysis inteview, the reason why teachers used those types of strategies on students’ reading comprehension were because to make the student understand the reading text and the students guided to more focus on the text. To help their students overcome difficulties in comprehending the texts, especially the various aspects of reading such as the main idea, detailed information, making inferences and noting references and also teacher could help students in developing the meaning contained in the text reading so that students more easily understand the contents of reading.Keywords: Teachers’ Strategies, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This study was focused on Jargon used byNaposo Nauli Bulung group in Batak Angkola society. The objectives of this study were to find out kinds of Jargons used inNaposo Nauli Bulung group, and to describe the meanings of jargons related to denotative and connotative meaning. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the interpersonal functions of Naposo Nauli Bulung group in Batak Angkola societyand gathered descriptively, where the data is obtained, analyzed, classified and interpreted based on the results of research in the field. The technique used in the study was a technique documentary communication by Bailey (1994). The findings of this study show that kinds of jargon used in Naposo Nauli Bulung group classified into seven categories, namely Basilect, Colloquial, Cant, Slang, Vulgar, Acrolect, Argot.There were 100jargons founds in Naposo Nauli Bulung group, 63 jargon (63%) has denotative meaning and 37 jargon (37%) has connotative meaning. Base on the result, jargon was the most frequent that occurred among group members.

Abstract

This study aimed at determining the methods used in translating song lyrics on Harry's house album on Indolirik YouTube channel. The theory used in analyzing the data is Newmark theory (1988) which explained that there were two approaches in translating text namely SL Emphasis (Domestication) in which the emphasis was on the source language and the other one was TL Emphasis (Foreignization) in which the emphasis was on the target language. Newmark (1988) also explained there were eight methods of translations, namely, word for word, literal, faithful, semantic, adaptation, free, idiomatic, and communicative translation. The researcher conducted a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data were taken from the translation of song lyrics on Harry's house album on Indolirik YouTube channel, which consisted of 5 songs and 111 song lyrics. The findings of this research showed that there were 6 types of translation methods used by Indolirik YouTube channel in translating the lyrics. From the analyzed data, Indolirik YouTube channelused Literal translation (43,25%), Word-for-Word translation (5,41%), Free translation (10,81%), Idiomatic Translation (17,11%), and Communicative translation (23,42%).  It was also found that the translator mostly used the literal translation process, it means that the translation products focused on the source language in translating the song lyrics rather than the target one.
