Abstract

This study deals with logico-semantic relation in Sri Mulyani Indrawati’s speech.The objectives of this study were to describe the logico-semantic type and howlogico-semantic used in the speech. This study was conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative. The data of this study were clause complexes found in theSri Mulyani’s speech. There were 142 clause complexes as the sample. Based onthe analysis, it was found that only eight of ten types of logico-semantic wereused in Sri Mulyani’s speech. The types that were not found are ParatacticLocution and Paratactic Idea. The most occurrence type of logico-semantic wasParatactic Extension (26.76%). Then followed by Hypotactic Enhancement(23.23%), Hypotactic Elaboration (21.12%), Hypotactic Extension (19.01%),Paratactic Elaboration (4.92%), Paratactic Enhancement (2.81%), Hypotactic Idea(1.41%), and Hypotactic Locution (0.71%). For the use of paratactic extension asthe most used by Sri Mulyani indicates that she presented her ideas by adding,varying, and replacing the messages by using the conjunctions and, but, and or.

Abstract

In Universitas Negeri Medan, there are 6 assignments for each subjects to be accomplished in each semester, namely Routine Tasks, Critical Book Reviews, Critical Journal Reviews, Mini Research, Engineering Ideas and Projects. In doing all these tasks, of course, reading has important role. A good reading gives accurate data and information in accomplishing all tasks. To avoid a very boring reading and provide challenges, develop a good learning methods is a must. The aims of the study is to investigate how the recitation learning methods developed for the reading comprehension of the students. The data obtained through the observation, questionnaires, and interviews to know the competence of students in reading comprehension. Adopting research development method that refers to the development of model, this development research data is qualitative and quantitative data. The objective of this research is to develop recitation methods in online learning for reading comprehension skills of the students of English Literature Study Program in Universitas Negeri Medan. The results of this study are expected to be able to give contribution to the students who take Reading Subject and also to the lecturers who teach Reading Subject to be more efficient and effective in using appropriate learning methods in Reading Subject.

Abstract

The study accentuates bilingual creativity as the pedagogical intervention of postcolonial creative writing strategy in poetry class through the writing of haiku and short poems. Twenty-five students in their freshmen year at the English Department were engaged in reading a culturally local text (Sumatra-Javanese ethnic poetry to compose poetry from a post-colonial perspective). The workshop's five phases exploring, inciting inspirations, drafting, editing, and peer feedback provided the student, as a novice writer, with the benefit of familiarizing themselves with character, theme, and cultural issues; developing a cognitive process to negotiate different meanings in their first and second languages; and exploring creativity to write their own poetry in the second language. The scripts written in English are the product of poetry classes, which reveal students' localized knowledge and cultural literacy. The works reflect the participants’ cultural identity, even though English is the dominant language showcased in the almost fifty poems composed by the novice writers. The existence of local languages points to the development of their bilingual creativity; students in the poetry classroom are not only able to handle the meaning in the first and second languages, but also to promote their local culture to the global world.
