Abstract

The effect of social media in improving students’ writing skill is investigated in this paper, which can be used to improve students’ creativity in writing. This paper takes covering of second semester English education students of Universitas Negeri Medan that study written language skills. The method used in this research is the development research aims to produce written language skills learning materials using social media (instagram, facebook whatsapp). Its intention to answer the students’ need of the innovated material and to find out the level of students creativity after using such materials. Further, this paper gives a simpler and practical method to develop learning material using social media to improve students’ creativity in writing.

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the cultural values in song lyrics Endeng-endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. The objectives of this study were : (1) to find out the types of cultural values in song lyrics Endeng-endeng, (2) to find out the dominant types that used in song lyrics Endeng-endeng and (3) how the realization of the cultural values in wedding ceremony of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. There were 18 data of cultural values that were taken from song lyrics Endeng-endeng transcriptions. The findings of this research were : (1) There were nine cultural values of Batak that found in song lyrics Endeng-endeng, that contained kinship (16.7%), religion (16.7%), hagabeon (extended family)(11.1%), hasangapon (respect) (11.1%), hamoraon (wealth) (5.5%), hamajuon (modernization) (11.1%),  patik dohot uhum (rules and laws) (11.1%), pangayoman (nurture) (5.5%) marsisarian (conflict) (11.1%). (2) The most dominant types of cultural value was kinship and religion (16.7%). (3) The realization of cultural values of song lyrics Endeng-endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency was described by interview the informants that understood about Endeng-endeng. The meanings in song lyrics Endeng-endeng were the advices for the groom that should be applied by them in their life after got marriage.Keywords: cultural values, Endeng-endeng, song lyrics, wedding ceremony of Mandailing society

Abstract

This study deals with the characterization of Ronggur as the main character in Toba Dreams Movie and it was aimed to knowing the characteristics of antisocial personality of Ronggur in the movie. It was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was taken from Toba Dreams movie and the data were which showed actions and dramatic statements from Ronggur and other characters in the movie. The findings of the study showed that the characteristics of antisocial personality of Ronggur are : (1) failure to conform to social norms and respect lawful behaviours with 2 items, (2) deceitfulness with 10 items, (3) impulsivity with 5 items, (4) irritability with 33 items, (5) reckless disregard for the safety of self or others with 7 items, (6) Lack of Remorse with 3 items. The method of characterization and antisocial characteristics used on the main character in Toba Dreams have different meaning. Which in Robert & Jacobs theory of characterization methods presents antisocial personality characteristics, whereas in Schwartz theory antisocial characteristics apply to see the depiction of antisocial personality. Keywords: Characterization, antisocial personality, main character, movie.

Abstract

This study deals with Conversational Moves in Ace Ventura Movie. The purpose of the study is to find out the moves are played by the main character of Ace Ventura movie 1st series, describing how the moves are played by the characters of Ace Ventura movie 1st series and to find out the reason why the Moves are played in the way it is. The data were analyzed based on the Structure of interaction theory by Martin (1992). The analysis showed the moves are played by the main character of Ace Ventura Movie are K1 (primary knower) 37,9 %, K2 (secondary knower) 21,07 %, K1f (primary knower follow-up) 4,64 %, K2f (secondary knower follow-up)13,6 %, A1 (primary actor) 3.2 %, A2 (secondary actor) 7,14 %, A1f (primary actor follow-up) 0,35 %, A2f (secondary actor follow-up), Da1 (delay primary actor) 0,35 %, Bch (backchannel) 0,35 %, Cl (clarification) 0,35 %, Cf (confirmation) 3,2 %, Rcf (response to confirmation) 4,64 % and Ch (challenging) 0,71 %. The moves that are played by the characters is dynamic because the speakers on that dialogue staged clarification, confirmation, back-channel and challenging move on the dialogue.Keywords: ConversationalMoves, Dynamics of Exchange.

Abstract

The study deals with Feminism in Veronica Roth’s Movie “Divergent” from three women character. The objective of the study were to find out the types of feminism and the roles of women in Divergent movie. The research method of this study used qualitative research, relying on the analysis and description of previous researcher and the studies of feminism. The data of this study were the utterances that can be found out from the script of divergent movie. The data of this research were analyzed by using Tong’s theory. The researcher found there are 3 types of feminism in three women character in Divergent movie, they are : 5 statements that are included in liberal feminism, 12 statements are included in radical feminism, and 3 statements are included in anarchist feminism. The role of women that can be found from three women character in Divergent movie was the role of women in domestic sector and the role of women in public sector. Keywords: Divergent Feminism, Movie

Abstract

This study aims at explaining the symbols used in the novel and describing the values of optimistic reflected in the symbols used in Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea. This research is classified as a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data source of this study is the novel The Old Man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway. The collecting data process is note-taking technique. This study is also categorized as library research. Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher draws the conclusion such follow. First, it is found that there are eight symbols used in this novel. They are classified into Individual symbol and Universal symbol. In the novel the Old Man and the Sea the symbols which the researcher considers as individual symbols. Individual symbols are the old man as a symbol of someone who has optimistic, Manolin as a symbol of hope, Marlin as a symbol Struggle of life, Shark as a symbol of Destruction and problem, joe Di Maggio as a symbol Strong desire, bird as a symbol of help. The second category is Universal symbol. universal symbol are Sea as symbol of universe, Lion as symbol of strength. there are two elements or values which characterize someone as the one who has optimistic life which is reflected in the symbols used in this novel. They are the values of struggle and positive thinking, Second, Those symbols reflect the values of optimistic life which is to be the theme of the novel. Keywords: optimistic, symbol

Abstract

This study dealt with figurative language in Amir Hamzah’s selected poems. The objective of this study were to investigate the types of figurative language found in Amir Hamzah’s selected poems and to find out the literal meaning of figurative language found. This study was conducted by using qualitative method to solve the problems. The data of this study were phrases and sentences contained figurative language in the poems. The sources of data were six poems poems which had multiple series taken from Amir Hamzah’s Poetry Anthology of Buah Rindu. The data were selected by using random sampling technique. For collecting the data, this study used documentary technique, and the instruments of data were documentary sheets. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. The findings of this study are there twenty two figurative languages found as follows, three figurative language of metaphor (13.63%), seven figurative language of hyperbole (31.81%), five figurative language of personification (22.72%) and seven figurative language of simile (31.83%). The literal meaning of figurative language found in Amir Hamzah’s poems were basically was about the love story of Amir himself and also talking about his longing to his mother.Keywords : Figurative Language, Figure of Speech, Poem

Abstract

This research discussed about  taboo language in Batak Toba language at Pajak Sore Padang Bulan Medan which aimed to find out the types, the impacts of  taboo language expression towards customers, and how Bataknese society perceptions towards their taboo language. This research was based on Mahmoud’s theory. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from 25 conversations of male and female participants who become sellers and customers in Traditional Market. The findings showed that there were 25 data, 20 data for the types and the impacts, 5 data for Bataknese society perceptions. The dominant types from taboo words in Batak Toba language is Insult and Slurs with 7 expressions, second is scatology with 5 expressions, followed by epithets with 3 expressions, vulgarity with 1 expression, obscenity with 1 expression. Batak sellers is the dominant use taboo language because it was their habit when they were angry but sometimes it is also a part of their close relationship, it means that how close their relationship, so they can used the taboo language. In the analyzed of the impacts of taboo language towards customers, the dominant impacts were people got offended easily and sometimes they become the people who have the irrational thinking. There were 5 perceptions of Bataknese society perceptions about their taboo language and the dominant perception were sellers and customers could not receive taboo words because they still thought that the language could have a bad impact on children because they would replicate and pronounce the taboo language.
