Abstract

Literatures mostly focus on the Indonesian maritime communities discussing the local-traditional institutions, socio-economics, fishing techniques, marine fishery modernization which stressing capitalism and global market, poverty of fishing communities, as well as marine ecosystem destruction. In fact, most of those studies neglect the navigation and maritime interaction of fishermen, which become the key to comprehend the core and characteristics of maritime culture over the world. This article aims to identify and analyze the maritime geobio-socio-cultural insights of the Buginese-Makassarese fishermen within the context of their voyage and interaction with the other fishermen communities in Indonesia. The data were collected selectively from some research reports, especially “Studying the Institution and Maritime Cultural Concept of Buginese-Makassarese, Mandarese, and Butonese Seamans Supporting the Strength of National Integration and Social Harmony” (LP2M Unhas, 2010), in which I participated as coordinator and team member. Froom the new “navigation and reproduction of maritime geo-socio-cultural insights” model, four themes of maritime geo-bio-socio-cultural insights of the Buginese-Makassarese can be identified, namely (1) the insight of geo-bio-climate Nusantara sea, (2) the insight of sea as space with its bio-abiotic resources as opened-closed property/access, (3) the insight of maritime ethnic and culture diversity, and (4) the concept of homeland and maritime nation unity. Sumber data untuk penulisan artikel ini diambil secara selektif dari beberapa laporan penelitian, khususnya “Studying the Institution and Maritime Cultural Concept of Buginese-Makassarese, Mandarese, and Butonese Seamans Supporting the Strength of National Integration and Social Harmony” (LPPM Unhas, 2010) di mana penulis terlibat aktif sebagai koordinator maupun anggota tim peneliti.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to explain how Indonesia was conceptualized as the Indonesian Maritime Continent. From a geo-social perspective, maritime culture can be viewed in, three major dimensions. First, Indonesia is one of the largest archipelagic countries in the world with all the geographical potential, invaluable marine, and maritime resources; second, the potential for socio-cultural, socio-demographic, socio-economic, and long maritime cultural history within the framework of the unity of the Republic of Indonesia; and third, the existence of academic core and the maritime vision of Unhas, the idea of the Indonesian Maritime Continental Development which was launched by the government in 1995/1996, and the vision of maritime national development by President Joko Widodo marked the role of academics and governments in the dynamic process of development to the phase of maritime civilization in the future. In the context of developing maritime ethnographic studies and anthropological contributions to the development of maritime civilization in the future, ideas and academic commitment are needed to make the Indonesian Archipelagic State a large and unique area of maritime socio-cultural research development in the world and Southeast Asia in particular. Thus, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, comparative, and multidisciplinary research is needed to carry out broadly and intensively. For this reason, through my inauguration speech for Professor of Anthropology in Hasanuddin University, I introduced a focus of maritime anthropology studies on sailing experiences and the reproduction of Nusantara/Indonesian maritime geo-socio-cultural insights. Through the application of the concept of experience and reproduction of maritime geo-socio-cultural insights which were developed from the concept of maritime ethos disposition theory of reproduction from A.H.J. Prins as a mode of description and analysis, I found the categories of maritime cultural insights and attitudes of Indonesian sailors. They understand most of the territorial waters of the Nusantara (archipelago) and the resources within as common property, a space for interaction between groups of sailors who are diverse in their maritime ethnicity and culture, which in turn strengthens awareness and recognition of the unity of the homeland, culture, and nation that is Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (unity in diversity).

Abstract

Internal migration among coastal communities is often viewed purely through an economic lens. In contrast, in reality, it involves complex social, cultural, and institutional dimensions that shape the formation of migrant communities. The Butonese fishing community on Derawan Island, Berau Regency, exemplifies how migration creates new social spaces rich in meaning, identity negotiation, and structural tensions. This study analyzes the migration process of Butonese fishers to Derawan Island. It explores how they establish a new community through social adaptation and the reproduction of cultural values, while also identifying structural challenges in integrating with local systems. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and oral history documentation across five coastal villages, the study draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, Fredrik Barth’s theory of ethnic boundaries, and Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space. Findings indicate that migration occurred gradually through social networks, driven by ecological pressures, cultural values surrounding migration, and the desire to build a more stable livelihood. The Butonese community reproduces its social structure through collective labor, informal authority, and the creation of symbolic spaces known as the “Buton Group.” Despite achieving internal cohesion, they continue to face structural obstacles, including limited access to land legality, administrative recognition, and formal empowerment programs. This research underscores the need to understand coastal migration not merely as an economic or demographic movement, but as a socially embedded process involving identity, power, and spatial transformation.

Abstract

This research seeks to comprehend the self-reflection undergone by those who have converted to Islam in Indonesia following their religious conversion. Religious conversion is a multifaceted social event, encompassing significant spiritual and social transformations for individuals. This study utilizes a descriptive qualitative methodology using a case study technique. Purposive sampling was employed to pick five informants who had converted to Islam within the year preceding the investigation, and one informant as a management of Mualaf Foundation. Data were gathered via comprehensive interviews to investigate the emotional, spiritual, and social experiences of converts following the recitation of the shahada. The study’s findings reveal that converts undergo a range of profound emotions throughout and following the conversion process, encompassing feelings of anxiety, skepticism, and finally serenity and a sense of proximity to Allah. Furthermore, converts have problems related to inadequate religious education and societal prejudice that impede their transition process. Self-reflection is a crucial instrument for converts to comprehend their transformations, establish new life objectives, and identify methods to engage with their communities. In conclusion, the post-conversion self-reflection process is intricate and demanding, however it offers converts the opportunity to enhance their spiritual comprehension and forge a new identity within Islam. This study emphasizes the need of augmented social support and religious instruction to aid converts in their spiritual development and social assimilation into wider groups.
