Abstract

This article tries to explain how the important role of the dotem or totem in building a sense of unity both in the social sphere and the religious side. Based on the results of research conducted by Durkheim, we can conclude that totems have been deeply involved in the pulse of Aboriginal life in Australia. Totems are not just names used by various clans, totems have also been transformed into something sacred. With this sacredness, the totem has become the initial foothold for the formation of social solidarity and is able to encourage the community to construct life ethics and even become the strongest factor in which religion arises. Keywords: Totems, religion, society. Artikel ini berusaha menjelaskan bagaimana peran penting dotem atau totem dalam membangun rasa persatuan baik di ranah sosial maupun sisi agama. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Durkheim, kita bisa menyimpulkan bahwa totem telah terlibat jauh ke dalam nadi kehidupan suku Aborigin di Australia. Totem bukan hanya sekedar nama yang digunakan oleh berbagai macam klan, totem juga telah menjelma menjadi sesuatu yang sakral. Dengan kesakralan tersebut, totem telah menjadi pijakan awal terbentuknya solidaritas sosial serta mampu mendorong masyarakat untuk mengkonstruksi etika hidup bahkan menjadi satu faktor terkuat dimana agama itu muncul. Kata Kunci: Totem, agama, masyarakat.
