Abstract

The growing interest in gender issues, relationship, family construct etc can be seen in academic writing or elsewhere. Gender stereotypes obviously have created some impacts on individual behaviors. Such stereotypes consolidate gender behavior practised in society. Mental and physical health are also affected by these stereotypes. Moreover, gender stereotypes affect male and female relationships.            Anna Karenina and The Immoralist were written at different times and places, 1866 and 1902, both of these Novels written by men with their perspective.. The female character in these two novels portray different stereotypes. Female characters lack authenticity if they are not portrayed as the complex and unique individuals. Too often women are merely stereotypes that allow the male protagonist to define his own role and fulfill his own selfhood. In response to this misrepresentation of women in literature, feminist criticism has necessarily often become a negative one, resisting stereotyped images of women.

Abstract

Crazy Rich Asians (2018), a film by Jon M. Chu is one of many films that raise this topic as the main theme of the story. This film tells about the life of a Chinese American woman, first generation, who was born and grew up in New York, the United States. This research is intended to elaborate how this movie portrays Rachel’s identity as a form of negotiation and why Rachel’s identity becomes problematic only when she met Nick’s family. By conducting descriptive qualitative method, this research uses only some dialogues and narration taken from Crazy Rich Asians film script as the source of data. Since the intention of this research is to analyze the identity negotiation between two cultures, therefore this research is conducted under postcolonial theory. The result of the study shows that although Rachel still hold on the Chinese culture as her ancestor’s culture, it turns out that American values has influenced her a lot in making decision. It leads to her conflict with Nick’s mother since Eleanor hold on Chinese traditional cultures. This research concludes that negotiation showed by Rachel in the movie is needed to do in order to be accepted by both of the cultures although it still leads to some conflict.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the dominance of white people in the novel Prairie Lotus and the impact that occurs after the emergence of the domination in the novel. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method. The data from this study is the conversation of the characters and the narrators’ narration. The method of collecting data from this study is to read the entire contents of the novel using close reading techniques. In analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of race and racism by Robert Miles and Malcolm Brown. The results show that white people dominate the way of life of minorities in this novel, namely Hanna. She gets a lot of oppression from white people in the Dakota area. This study also shows that there is an impact received by the main character in the novel 'Prairie Lotus', namely the impact on her psyche and mental health. The emergence of domination is due to the lack of an immediate sense of brotherhood and tolerance towards people from the same regions around the main character's residence in the novel Prairie Lotus.
