Abstract

The word "beautiful" is closely addressed to women. The standardization of beauty attached to women by a patriarchal society has become an issue that is still strongly opposed by feminists. The feeling of being less attractive and less-loved will grow in the women’s minds who are deemed less or do not meet the beauty standard in the patriarchal society. This study is aimed: (1) to discuss beauty standards set forward by a patriarchal society represented through an epic literary work, a novel by Laksmi Pamuntjak entitled The Question of Red, and (2) to identify how the character Amba redefines beauty in Laksmi Pamuntjak's The Question of Red. This study applies literary criticism to achieve satisfactory results, which refers to feminists' "reading as women." This study indicates that patriarchal society's beauty standard is represented by depicting Amba's appearance that is different from the physical depiction of the mother and the sister who always have a beautiful appearance. Besides, Amba believes that the beauty standard is a catastrophe that unwittingly harms women. Moreover, beauty is not always just about appearance.

Abstract

Hidden Figures clearly show how the injustice committed by white people against black people as a society with majority status treat black people in Virginia, United States.  This study aimed to represent Black Scientist characters and the intersectionality of racialized, gendered, and classed identity in reconceptualization of Black Feminism by Patricia Hill Collins. As can be seen in Hidden Figures, Theodore Melfi’s illustrated the lives of the Black Scientists to prove that they could achieve success. The research in Hidden Figures points out that Black scientists experienced sexism, racism, and classism as intersecting oppression. The state of being subjected to tyranny. The experience of facing gender, race, and socioeconomic discrimination in everyday life. Black Scientist women respond to prejudice by succeeding in their jobs via hard effort, exploiting the system and working against it, disregarding the prejudice, concentrating on their good fortune, and urging others to join the struggle. It becomes clear that the Black Scientist characters also have the qualities and thoughts of Black Feminists, which lead to conflicting behaviours. Finally, the characters' re-imagining of Black Feminist leads to the establishment of Black Scientist orientation and empowerment, which results in the characters' lives.

Abstract

This paper reviews empirical studies on the relationship between literary understanding and critical thinking skills among students. Those studies considered are published between 2013 and 2025, totaling fifteen articles. In this systematic review, we examine empirical studies that treat the specific view, analysis, and interpretation of texts as an activity and examine how this text-based activity affects critical thinking skills. As a comprehensive approach to the use of literary texts in developing critical-thinking skills, this inquiry responds to extant studies. Results are centred on the advantages and difficulties of implementing literary comprehension strategies to develop critical literacies for both researchers and practitioners.
