Abstract

Being an Arab-American Muslim woman in America, Mohja Kahf has encountered not only problems in living a life which is in accordance with Islamic sharia but also the difficulties to deal with non-Muslim Americans who are often cynical with Muslim’s dress, rituals and so forth. As a poet, she expresses all her thought, feeling, hope, and anxiety in her poem collection Emails from Scheherazad (2003). This research attempts to elaborate both dilemma and aspiration of Kahf as an Arab-American Muslim woman as figured out in a number of her poems in Emails from Scheherazad. This is a qualitative research, and it approaches the poems using sociology of literature theory. Thus, it analyzes not only the issues within the poems but also cross-checks it with the relevant social subjects such as the existence of Arab-American Muslim in America, the response of American government and society towards Muslim’s way of life in America, and brief account on Kahf’s life. This research has found that the dilemmas faced by Kahf are mostly those related with wearing a scarf, performing Salah starting from descent facilities for wudu to prayer. Also, Kahf aspires for love, friendship, strong commitment to ancestor’s tradition while peacefully conforming to present locale, and humanity above all.

Abstract

Musicalization of poetry is an intriguing class project for English Literature students. It enables them to dig into their creativity and talent in writing and performing poetry and at the same time speeding up their comprehension of English poetry, particularly from the aspect of musical device of a poem. Though not treated as the main activity of the course, such task is valuable, acommodating those interested more in producing literary work than merely criticizing it. Also, to make this project more fun, the students can be challenged to videotape their performance and share it on YouTube. The students are thus encouraged to pack it in a good video presentation because their videos, once uploaded and set public, become available for any viewers. This project may work best if assigned for a group work because the students could delegate jobs such as who is to write and recite the poem, to design the concept of their musicalization of poetry, to tape and edit the video, and finally to upload the video on YouTube and promote it on social media like Facebook and Twitter. Indeed, musicalization of poetry project could be taken as an extra assignment in poetry class by which the students practice employing the poetic devices at first hand. This paper will explain the why, what and how this class project should be conducted.Key words: musicalization of poetry, YouTube video upload, poetry class project

Abstract

Student's work for a writing class is no longer one submitted for limited readership the teacher and the writer himself as it can be publicly shared online. Posted on a webpage such as blog, it allows more people to access, read, or leave comments. Though it may sound intimidating for some shy students who are likely to keep their writing private, it is less about trespassing the confidential status of a student's work than building the student's self confidence and encouraging them to produce a better composition. It is especially through class blog which is managed by a number of students of the same class. This model proves to be beneficial for the students because not only is their writing read by more audience than their fellow classmates but they can also identify themselves as a team. This paper attempts to describe the previous researches concerning the application of blog in general and what it means by class blog, the model of class blog which has been implemented in this project, and how team work among the classmates is built through class blogs.

Abstract

Solomon Gaenor and Cin(T)a similarly explore the intricacies of interfaith romance. However, coming from varied backgrounds, the main characters from each film, Gaenor and Annisa, develop different attachment styles that result in different coping mechanism when handling their relationship issue. The primary research inquiries raised are (1) what  dominant attachment styles the characters adopt and what factors contribute to this and (2) how these styles influence their coping mechanism. This research aims to delve deeper into this subject matter using Hazan Shaver’s attachment theory and Folkman Lazarus’ coping mechanism theory. It employs a descriptive-comparative method within a qualitative framework. The writers found that Gaenor displays dominant secure attachment styles, allowing her to maintain a strong emotional connection with her partner despite familial and societal pressures, while Annisa shows a dominant avoidant attachment style, making her more cautious and hesitant to establish relations with her partner. Beyond cultural dynamics, this research also indicated that the success of relationships is more determined by internal factors rather than external ones. These findings provide a nuanced understanding of complex interfaith relationships across diverse cultures and contexts, as portrayed in literary texts. AbstrakSolomon Gaenor dan Cin(T)a menjelajahi kompleksitas romansa beda agama.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic sparked the production of corona-inspired Islamic music in Indonesia. Interestingly, against the backdrop of chaos and uncertainty, the genre appears to have transcended mere value-added entertainment and can be viewed as a tool that operates with or against power. Using Stuart Hall's concept of culture and power, this study aims to examine how popular culture such as this is utilized by the elites and the ordinary. This is qualitative research using content analysis, and the data were taken from the lyrics and live performances of Bimbo with their song “Corona” and Audul Marom rebana group with “Sirahku Mumet Sirahmu Piye.” This research found that corona-inspired Islamic music is not just an aesthetic call to surrender to God in the face of crisis. Instead, it acts as a vehicle for cultural adaptation by authorities and a platform for expressing dissent among the ordinary. Bimbo’s “Corona” and its involvement in the government-sponsored fundraising concerts exemplify efforts to mitigate public distrust during the pandemic. In contrast, the “Sirahku Mumet Sirahmu Piye” reproduced and popularized by a local rebana group from Demak echoes the plight of the lower classes, articulating the economic burden of the commoners due to COVID-19 measures.

Abstract

English as an international language is very important for students to learn in madrasas. One of the problems that students often face when learning English is speaking competence. To overcome these problems, one of them can be taken by implementing Project-Based Learning (PBL). This study aims to determine the effect of PBL implementation on improving the English speaking capacity of MA Diponegoro students. In addition, this study also aims to determine the changes in the attitudes of MA Diponegoro students after the implementation of the PBL learning model. The source of data for this study is 23 students of Class X MA Diponegoro Yogyakarta, 2 students of the English Literature Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga who have completed the previous TEFL Methodology course and in this study act as PBL teachers, as well as 2 lecturers and 1 alumnus of the English Literature Study Program as observers. This study uses an interactive analysis method in the process of analyzing students' English language capacity and attitudes during PBL and data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation over a period of 3 months. The results showed that of the 23 students, all experienced significant changes in English speaking capacity (fluency, pronunciation & accent, grammar, vocabulary and details), although none of the students had really reached the excellent level. It can also be concluded that the final product of PBL in the form of English speeches that are done in pairs, uploaded to the school's YouTube channel, competed and given awards have a positive effect on changing students' attitudes, where they become more confident in practicing English speaking, motivated to dare to be active in class, and comfortable working together to complete speech projects. This kind of PBL model has the potential to be developed for MBKM activities.
