Abstract

Islamic boarding schools are religious institutions that not only teach religious problems to santri, but also relate to the role of porndok pesantren on community empowerment. Islamic boarding schools also have a role in national politics. In this context the role of the pesantren in dialogue and contextualizing Islamic teachings is not rigid and black and white. But Islamic boarding schools are able to display the teachings of Islam that are harmonious, peaceful, tolerant, and not radical. Islamic understanding initiated by Islamic boarding schools is far from the values of radical doctrines, or easy doctrine to state ‘heresy’ to other groups. This becomes the view and value championed by the pesantren community including the role of the Kiai (Islamic clergy) in developing modern and global life.

Abstract

The spreading Islamic content through Whatsapp as one of popular social media platforms which no longer reflects moderate (wasatiyyah) Islamic teaching has began to appear. It ranges from the content of Islamic teaching, the pattern of movement, response on contemporary life, to discussion on political system and discourses on nation-state. In responding to the Islamic contents implying radicalism, terrorism and ambition to change the form of state from republic into khilafah based system, most of Maduresse urban people reject it. However, they still rely on the content spreaded through social media in understanding Islam. This dynamics could possibly influence people and lead them to either right or left extreme points out of the frame of moderate Islam taught by Rasulullah pbuh and classically recognized scholars (ulama’ salaf al-salih). Therefore, it is urgent to formulate a preaching strategy with the good content to provide people access on balanced information so they could be selective in understanding Islamic teaching.

Abstract

This article explores moderate and eclectic traditionalism beyond Kiai Haji Muhammad Hashim Ash’ari’s contribution in the shariah and Islamic jurisprudence of social politic (Fiqh al-Siyâsah al-Ijtimâ’iyah) in Indonesia. It is conceptual research referring to some of his works as well as discussion about his thought among Islamic scholars. Based on definition of moderation from the Qur’an, hadith, and some scholars’ opinion, Hashim can be best categorized as Islamic traditionalist figure who enforced both moderation and eclecticism. However, he maintained distinctive features compared to both traditionalist and modernist Islamic figures. It is mainly clear from both his thought and movement which rely on the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah in theology, four fiqh school leaders (Hanafiyah, Malikiyah, Syafi’iyah dan Hambaliyah), and thariqah sufiyah mu’tabarah. Additionally, he showed appreciation and promoted for adaptation to both local and foreign idea that later inspired distinctive religiosity in Indonesia. This particularly applies in the concept of relation between Islamic law and nationalism, jihad, political fiqh and governmental system in Islam.

Abstract

Traditional Islamic education thinking is one of the Islamic understandings that is widely adopted by the Indonesian population and this is very popular. This modern Islamic educational thinking is not only enjoying an increasingly advanced era but still relies on the Qur'an and Sunnah so that Muslims remain on the source of their teachings that are never worn down by the times. With the traditional concepts of tarbiyah, ta'lim and ta'dib while the modern concept relies on science and technology. But it does not diminish in the slightest about religious education, as the golden age used to be. The search for a new paradigm in Islamic education starts from the concept of man according to Islam, the Islamic view of science and technology, and after that the concept or system of Islamic education as a whole is formulated.

Abstract

The process of the arrival of Islam in Indonesia can be understood from various opinions that can historically be explained in several theories below: Indian theory, Persian theory, theory, China, and Arab theory. The idea of education in Islam during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia was that the Dutch colonial government severely restricted the activities of madrassas and teachers who taught in madrassas. They do so because of the growing fear of Muslims. The idea of education in Islam during the Japanese colonial period in Indonesia Islamic education is slightly freer than during the Dutch colonial rule. However, Japan with its mission, requires teachers to learn Japanese in giving lessons and changing Dutch to Indonesian, including requiring respect to Tenno (Emperor) and will be arrested if they do not follow the rules of the Japanese colonial side.
