Abstract

As a typical learning method which is grounded from a scientific approach, problem-based learning (PBL) does not only enhance students’ critical thinking but also helps them actively construct their knowledge and skill. The objectives of this study were to investigate the impact of PBL on (1) students’ speaking skill and (2) their attitude toward ELL. This study employed an embedded mixed-method design which combined one-group pretest-posttest and descriptive qualitative design. It involved a group of 41 students as the sample. The quantitative data were collected through pretest-posttest and questionnaire (closed-ended). Meanwhile, the qualitative data were obtained through observation and open-ended questionnaire. The findings of the study found that students demonstrated better speaking performance after being treated through PBL activities. Besides, they exhibited more positive behavioral, cognitive, and affective attitude toward ELL.

Abstract

The study aimed at describing types of politeness strategies used in Bilingual Pre-Kindergarten in Denpasar-Bali. The research was designed as a qualitative study by employing four instruments which included the researcher as the main instrument, observation sheets, video recorder and interview guide. The finding showed that the English-Native-Speaker (ENS) teacher dominantly used positive politeness strategy in order to motivate the students in teaching and learning process with the closer relationship compared with bald on-record strategy, off-record strategy and negative politeness strategy. However, saying-nothing strategy (Don’t do the FTA) could not be found due to the age and the needs of the students in which they needed an active communication environment because it influenced their social-emotional development.

Abstract

Kepribadian merupakan karakteristik individu yang menjadi ciri khas tersendiri yang membedakan suatu individu dengan yang lainnya. Karakteristik yang dimaksud disini bersifat internal dengan kata lain berkaitan dengan emosi, perasaan, pembawaan yang berpengaruh pada perilaku individu. Selama ini para guru kurang menyadari jika kepribadian yang mereka tunjukkan didepan anak didiknya sangat berpengaruh pada perkembangan karakter anak didik itu sendiri. Para guru cenderung hanya menunaikan tugas utama mereka yaitu mengajar, tanpa memperhatikan jika apa yang mereka lakukan dilihat, didengar, dan ditiru oleh peserta didiknya. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji problematika kompetensi kepribadian guru yang mempengaruhi perkembangan karakter peserta didik. Penelitian ini merupakan studi pustaka atau library research yang dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan berbagai sumber dan literasi terkait dengan topik bahasan. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa perkembangan karakter serta moralitas peserta didik merupakan cerminan dari kompetensi kepribadian guru itu sendiri. Oleh sebab itu, guru harus mampu menjadi good role-model serta menampilkan kepribadian yang terpuji untuk dicontoh oleh peserta didiknya.
