Abstract

Abstract Food is one of the elements that can reveal the society’s dynamic, beliefs, ideology, and values. The relation of food and literature is inevitable as food is part of culture, then the relations of characters in a work of literature may involve food. This paper is intended to investigate the symbolic functions of food in some Indonesian children’s writings Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya (KKPK) series, namely Izzati’s Let’s Bake Cookies, Alifia’s Egg Ice Cream, and Haura’s Resep Baru (New Recipe). The umbrella of the theory is Roland Barthes’ food as signifying system and it is applied in the context of children’s literature. In addition, to scrutinize the cultural-social and production of the work, Bourdieu’s field of cultural production  theory is applied. Close-reading is used to collect data in the three writings. The data are tabulated and then analyzed through sociological approach and using descriptive analysis method. The result shows that in that literary works food functions as: 1) arena for socialization and solidarity; 2) identity marker, both for social and self identity; 3) social class marker; and 4) arena for negotiation for global and local culture. Keywords: food, symbolic function, children’s writing  METAFORA MAKANAN DALAM SASTRA ANAK INDONESIA SERI KKPK AbstrakMakanan merupakan salah satu elemen penting yang mampu mengungkapkan dinamika masyarakat, kepercayaan, ideologi, dan nilai-nilai.

Abstract

Abstract

As food is now also observed through the lens of social sciences,  the relation of food and literature is inevitable. In diasporic identity, the existence of food as one of the elements that immigrants usually long for is thus unavoidable. This paper discusses the metaphor of food and foodways in the novel The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri. Through postcolonial analysis, the results show that food and foodways metaphorically represent nostalgia experienced by the main character. Food also becomes the field of showing identity, and negotiation process which bridges the binary cultural differences. Moreover, Lahiri also implies the metaphor of food as the oppression of women due to the existence of patriarchal values in the old world. Domesticity symbolized through food and foodways puts women in an uneasy situation. Lahiri also parallels the food as the medium of the old and new world: the poor and sufficiency, and the resistance to capitalism. Keywords : Food, nostalgia, identity, oppression, binary opposition

Abstract

Travel writing is one of the literary genres that has received attention today. This paper discusses the work of A. Fuadi’s Ranah Tiga Warna (The Land of the Three Colors) telling the main character’s experience in three lands: Bandung (Indonesia), Amman (Jordan), and Saint Raymont (Canada). This paper is to analyze the negotiation process between ‘the self’ and ‘the other’  experienced by the main character in the third land: Saint Raymont. This uses the concept of  negotiation of ‘the self’ and ‘the other’ by Thompson, and Deleutze’s  and Guattari’s  segmentarity. The results show that the main character can play a flexible interplay between ‘the self’ and ‘the other’, negotiation and accommodation, and even transduction. The successful negotiation process can be seen from the difference and how the main character has willingness to bring the difference to his home country. The main character’s  mention of  ‘return home’ when revisiting Saint Raymond years later becomes the evidence of the successful negotiation as well. Keywords: travel writing, negotiation, the self, the other

Abstract

Diaspora literature has been one of literary genres that is flourishing for the last few years in Indonesia. This paper aims at analyzing the concept of home in diaspora in Leila S. Chudori’s Pulang (Home). The novel is about the experience of Indonesian exile in 1960s in French, in which he and his friends cannot return home due to the accusation of their involvement in Indonesian banned party. Through sociological approach, the concept of home by Mallet and Golob are used to explore this literary work. A close reading method and classification based on the topic are used in researching the novel. The result shows that although the main character experiences marginalization and estrangement, he still wants to return to Indonesia. The concept of home for the main character is not about the movement or created in the new land, but home is where one originates and that is a place to return. Keywords:diaspora, home
