Abstract

Setting standards for language teacher education programs, materials, and evaluation sparks some hope in attempts to improve the quality of the programs. Yet, this very fact augmented by my examination of ten language teacher education programs in Java, Bali, and Lampung (FKIP and PGRI) triggers a critical look at the idea of standard development. In particular, I would like to explore whether it can lead to a better professionalism or we are just lost in the complexity of the standardization itself. This paper consists of four sections. Departing from an overview of language teacher education programs in Indonesia and the theoretical foundations, some major problems in this area are identified. Following this, the discussion is focused on the idea of standard development for language teacher education programs in Indonesia. Eventually, some suggestions are put forth to highlight the need for establishing coherent curriculum framework bridging the two realms of language teacher education and school milieu as well as providing learners with knowledge base that enables them to cope with complex demands of school settings and more essentially, to act as an agent in the social change process.

Abstract

This study reported students’ perceptions of the teacher’s teaching conceptions in an English Teacher Training and Education Program in Indonesia. The teaching conceptions were based on Freeman and Richardson’s (1993) three types of teaching conceptions: scientifically based, theory-and-values based, and art or craft based conceptions. The study involved 218 participants from three different batches (2008, 2009, and 2010). Obtaining the data from the questionnaires and interviews, this study found that the three batches shared the same perceptions of several items in each teaching conception. In the science/research conception, they agreed on the teachers’ applying learning principles and using an effective classroom practice model. As for the theory/philosophy conception, they similarly perceived the teachers’ incorporating values into teaching, conveying communicative approach, referring to theories, giving moral values through teaching, presenting themselves as a role model in morality, and presenting their teaching rationally. Their perceptions were also confirmed by the interview revealing that the students tended to see their teachers’ teaching conceptions as theory/philosophy based. Regarding the art/craft conception, they similarly noted the teachers’ helping them to understand how to develop their ability and skills as future teachers. The analysis using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) further confirmed that the three batches were not significantly different with P = .658. They expected the teachers to hold art/craft based teaching conception because they believed that understanding them as learners was the key for successful learning. Keywords:  students’ perceptions, teachers’ teaching conceptions, scientifically based, theory-and-values based, and art or craft based conceptions.

Abstract

Abstract

This research explores strategies to support novice learners in developing their writing skills in the English Education Study Program at an Indonesian university, the Islamic Institut of Palangka Raya. Writing is often considered one of the most challenging aspects of language learning, requiring a combination of vocabulary knowledge, grammatical precision and structural coherence. The participants, five beginner learners, were selected using purposive sampling and underwent a writing task that progressed from sentence-level exercises to paragraph construction. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and direct observation, and analyzed thematically. Findings showed that challenges such as limited vocabulary, grammatical errors, and psychological barriers such as low self-confidence hindered students' progress. Effective strategies included guided sentence construction, collaborative writing exercises, and exposure to structured templates and quality reading materials. The participants reported improved confidence and skills through positive feedback and step-by-step writing tasks. The findings suggest that integrating motivating and structured learning methods can significantly improve writing ability among beginners, contributing to their academic and personal growth.
