Abstract

Particle boardwas made using processed oil palm empty fruit bunch and casein glue. This research used two factor variables and eight response variables to determine the best matrix/filler ratio and compression pressure for particle board production. The factor variables, (matrix/filler ratio and compression pressure), determined the response variables: modulus of rupture, water content, density, tensile strength, and both endothermic-and-exothermic temperatures and heats. This research aimedto optimize the mechanical and physical property of particle boards by using the bunch/glue ratio. The processing of data was undertaken by Response Surface Method (RSM) with Central Composite Design (CCD). The optimal conditions under which particle board created wereat matrix/filler ratio of 50:50 and compression pressure of 3.53 kg/cm2; resulting in a modulus of rupture of 325.32 kg/cm2, water content of 0.009%, density 0.826 g/cm3, and tensile strength of 2.573 kg/cm2. This research also indicates that casein glue results in particle board with optimum parameters of endothermic temperature of 247.74 °C, an endothermic heat of -4.122 mW, exothermic temperature of 431.08 °C, and exothermic heat of 7.526 mW. Based on physical testing, most particle board properties obtained fulfilled the standards of water content and density as required by the Indonesian National Standard/SNI 03-2105-2006.

Abstract

The service was carried out in Weuraya Village and Lampaya Village, Lhoknga District, Aceh Besar Regency with the target of fish farmer business groups. At first, the need for fish in Lhoknga and its surroundings only relied on fishing at sea by fishermen. Over time, the need for fish and employment for the community here eventually led to fish farming. Seeing the potential of fish farming that is getting better in this area, a group of people in this area took the initiative to form a fish farming business group located in Lampaya and Weuraya Villages, Lhoknga District, Aceh Besar. These two villages are located not far from the center of the Banda Aceh city market, estimated at about 25 km from the location of the farm which can be reached for approximately 1 hour drive. Determining the composition of fish feed ingredients is an important issue because not all compositions will provide the best results for fish growth. The high price of fish feed in the market with low protein content causes fish farmers to experience difficulties in cultivating fish. The objectives of this activity are first, to concoct their own animal feed from tofu dregs, snails or rice snails, wheat flour, rice bran, and coconut meal which are very widely available around Lhoknga. The second training was for the Lampaya and Weuraya fish farmer groups in Lhoknga sub-district to make fish feed. All members of the Lampaya and Weuraya fish farmer groups are involved in the two scopes of work above, so that these two groups will have the knowledge and skills to make quality and healthy fish feed for fish. From the results of the monitoring of the service team, it is clear that the high enthusiasm of the community can be measured by the crowd of socialization and training participants, as well as the many questions that arise during the practice of making fish pellets. At the end of the activity, the community has mastered how to make their own fish feed and can save 60% of the total cost

Abstract

A Science Laboratory at Senior High School is an important facility for students in learning Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Students learn concepts in the classroom and should be able to test and/or prove those concepts in experiments in Science Lab. However, many Science laboratories at schools were not fully operated due to the lack of skillful teachers or lab assistants who can manage Science laboratories with the highest standard and be able to conduct experiments with available KITs in those laboratries. Based on this phenomenon, a group of lecturers from Physics Department of Syiah Kuala University conducted a community service at school in order to share insights and skills related to a good practice in Laboratory management and demonstated how to run Physics experiments with available KITs at a designated school laboratory. The participants of this event were Science teachers and students at the school. Some of the outcomes of this community service are the increase in Laboratory management skills among science teachers at this school and increase in ability to utilise available Science KITs at that school for Physics experiments. The teachers and students were very happy and antusias to participate in this program and be benefited from this activity

Abstract

Bioethanol is an alternative fuel derived from biological feedstock used to decrease the reliance on fossil fuels because of increasing energy consumption associated with population growth and increased use of oil fuels. Bioethanol production has been widely conducted using several types of algae, but the optimal conditions for the hydrolysis and fermentation processes are not explained in more detail. Therefore, this study focuses on determining the optimal conditions for hydrolysis and fermentation to maximize the bioethanol yield. This study uses optimization based on the hydrolysis time, temperature, and pH to increase the reducing sugar content using high-performance liquid chromatography in the enzymatic hydrolysis process. The process consists of liquefaction and saccharification steps, where 4% α-amylase enzyme and 2%, 3%, and 4% glucoamylase are used. Results showed that the optimal conditions for the hydrolysis time were 180 min at temperatures of 70 °C to 80 °C. The enzymatic hydrolysis process is conducted under optimal conditions, followed by the fermentation process. Finally, the distillation process was performed with a maximum bioethanol yield of 25.0%.
