Abstract

This article is aimed to present Kunto in three different angles: religion, arts and science. Religion here means the thought of Kunto in dealing with Islamic religious thought (objectivity). Arts may mean Kunto’s thought on literature (prophetic literature) and science here may be defined as Kunto’s thought on social and cultural sciences, particularly on historical sciences (Islamic historiography in Indonesia). Based on this, the writer may call ‘three worlds’ of Kunto as a religious man, an artist and a scientist at the same time (historian and culturalist). These three intermingled words are what the writer refers as intellectual ascetism, which should, not to say must, be possessed by all scientists of any disciplines.

Abstract

This article describes Yudian Wahyudi's thoughts regarding Maqasid al-Syari’ah as a method of solving contemporary problems in Indonesia. The primary data of this research was obtained from Yudian's writings about Maqasid al-Syari’ah. The secondary data were obtained from authoritative, up-to-date, and relevant literature sources. This study finds an Indonesian Maqasid al-Syari’ah theory, which is different from the Classical and Contemporary Maqasid al-Syari’ah. Indonesian Maqasid al-Syari’ah wants to harmonize between Maqasid al-Syari’ah (five primary needs or zharuriyyat al-khams) and IndonesianMaqasid (based on Pancasila). Maqasid al-Syari’ah Yudian's idea rests on four pillars, namely: tauhidul 'ulum (unity of knowledge) between Ayat Qur’aniyah, Kauniyah, and Insaniyah (zharuriyat ats-tsalasah) as the embodiment of the slogan al-Ruju' ila al-Qur'an wa al-Sunnah (Return to the Qur'an and Sunnah), the theory of pairing in Islamic law (ilahi-wad'i, absolute-relative, universal-local, eternal-temporary, and literal-meaning), method (Maqasid al -Syari'ah as an analytical knife or point of view to read the reality that is around us), and matters related to Indonesia. Meanwhile, Maqasid Indonesia is based on the five basic values of the goals of the Indonesian nation as embodied in Pancasila (Salam Pancasila): divinity (hifdz al-din), humanity (hifdz al-nafs), unity (hifdz al-nasl), deliberation and wisdom (hifdz al-’aql), and social justice (hifdz al-mal). The results of this study can have implications for the development and alignment factors of the Maqasid al-Syari’ah theory, which is unique to Indonesia. Indonesian Maqasid al-Syari’ah is a strengthening of the foundation of Usul al-Fiqh and Indonesian Fiqh.

Abstract

Abstract: The environmental damage in the modern era highlights the need for new conceptual approaches to address it. This study examines the differences and connections between Sufism and environmental ethics. Regarding their interconnection, the study uses the concepts of tazkiyya al-nafs in al-Qushayrī's Sufism and the systemic values in Holmes Rolston III. This qualitative research employs document analysis, focusing on al-Qushayrī's Lat}a>if al-Isha>ra and Holmes Rolston III's Environmental Ethics as primary sources analyzed through a comparative framework, supported by secondary data. The study investigates the concepts of zuhd, khawf, and qanā‘a in Sufism alongside biodiversity, organisms, and biosystemic values in environmental ethics. It proposes the integrative concepts of “prevent-repair,” “care-guard,” and “conviction-kindness” as key outcomes. These findings emphasize the urgency of environmental ethics, personal spirituality, and intrinsic awareness, offering both theoretical and practical insights. Contribution: Theoretically, this study advances the integration of Sufism and environmental ethics by connecting tazkiyya al-nafs (internal) with systemic values (external). Practically, it provides a framework for cultivating a balanced attitude and a conscious relationship with God, humans, and nature, grounded in both Qur'anic principles and ecological awareness.

Abstract

One of the basic methods in development of Islamic law which has muamalah (Islamic Economics) as a playing field is maqashid asy-syari’ah. The main goal of syariah is to generate and create maslahah, whereas the purpose of muamalah is to meet human needs. This article represents a preliminary study in attempting to find a point of contact of those two maslahah viewed from the steps of human needs as homo-economicus/homo-Islamicus.
