Abstract

In the seventeenth century AD, the Sultanate of Aceh under the leadership of Sultan Iskandar Thani made a manuscript entitled Bustanussalatin. This manuscript contains the story of the creation of the universe, the relationship between God and man, the lineage of the sultans of Aceh, as well as a small section about the royal garden called Taman Ghairah. The existence of this garden is still questionable, but scholars who research this garden associate three buildings nearby the former royal palace as a remnant of this Garden. This paper questions whether this garden was built or not and when it was built and the loss of this garden. Through literature review and archival research, this paper tries to trace the presence and disappearance of this garden. The Bustanussalatin manuscript provides information on the development of this garden during the reign of Iskandar Thani. Meanwhile, researchers believe that this garden was already built during the Iskandar Muda era. Portuguese maps provide information that this garden did not exist in the sixteenth century, while a map of the Netherlands in the nineteenth century before the start of the Dutch Aceh War, also does not depict this garden at all. This research proposes the idea that this garden was likely built during the reign of Iskandar Muda and was lost before the Dutch military aggression to Aceh.

The consideration of sustainability, sustainable development, or sustainable future began to emerge in the beginning of 18th century, precisely after the Brundtland Commission Report had been published in 1987. In the beginning, environmental awareness rose in the industrial country such as European countries and America. It is the consequence of the industrial revolution which had caused negative impact to the environment. Furthermore, climate change and global warming have become a great issue. Buildings gave contribution in this issue due to their consuming energy and releasing emissions. Therefore, the use of appropriate material is a key point of green building. Some considerations of material selection for green building are resource efficiency, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, water conservation, and affordability. These aspects are analysed in traditional house’s materials. The result from this qualitative approach shows that the materials used in traditional houses are green. There are some lessons that can be drawn from this local wisdom. They could be very useful for the future design of buildings.

The locations of mosques were in Meulaboh, the capital city of West Aceh, and in the rural area of West Aceh. The similarities are found in the typology of the roof, door, window, column, and façade ornamentation. Meanwhile, the minaret did not have a significant influence on the typology of the mosques in West Aceh. There is still research to be done and data to be collected about other mosques in other areas in Aceh. Then, the date period of construction data should be added to give a comprehensive perspective of the influence.

Abstract

This study is an extended research of previous studies on the mosque typology in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Although Aceh is well-known as a “mecca veranda” due to its proximity to Islam, the mosque typology research is still limited. The mosque holds significant value in the Muslim community. This study was conducted in Aceh’s Northern-Eastern route, which covers 90 (ninety) mosques located in 8 (eight) regencies. Using Baiturrahman Grand Mosque as the reference, as suggested in previous studies, the result indicates that the union-shaped mosque as a roof element is the predominant feature replicated by the mosques in Aceh’s Northern-Eastern route. Other elements, such as the column, the opening, and the roof ornamentation, are also replicated by some research objects insignificantly. Differing from the previous research, this study highlights that the minaret is a vital feature, although it is not applied in all research objects. Further research can be carried on toward broader areas with more diverse analytical factors such as time, socio-culture and technology.
