Abstract

In the seventeenth century AD, the Sultanate of Aceh under the leadership of Sultan Iskandar Thani made a manuscript entitled Bustanussalatin. This manuscript contains the story of the creation of the universe, the relationship between God and man, the lineage of the sultans of Aceh, as well as a small section about the royal garden called Taman Ghairah. The existence of this garden is still questionable, but scholars who research this garden associate three buildings nearby the former royal palace as a remnant of this Garden. This paper questions whether this garden was built or not and when it was built and the loss of this garden. Through literature review and archival research, this paper tries to trace the presence and disappearance of this garden. The Bustanussalatin manuscript provides information on the development of this garden during the reign of Iskandar Thani. Meanwhile, researchers believe that this garden was already built during the Iskandar Muda era. Portuguese maps provide information that this garden did not exist in the sixteenth century, while a map of the Netherlands in the nineteenth century before the start of the Dutch Aceh War, also does not depict this garden at all. This research proposes the idea that this garden was likely built during the reign of Iskandar Muda and was lost before the Dutch military aggression to Aceh.

Abstract

According to the manuscript of Bustanussalatin by Nuruddin Ar Raniry, in 1637 Sultan Iskandar Thani built a private royal garden called Taman Ghairah (Ghairah Garden). The seventeenth-century garden of Aceh still holds some questions because most of its objects are no longer found in Banda Aceh. Three buildings such as: Gunongan, Kandang and Pintô Khôp which are close to the former Sultan’s palace, are believed to be the remains of the garden. This present study is architectural research that incorporates direct observation and semiotic study on the garden simulation. The simulation is based on the Bustanussalatin manuscript. It is found that the existence of several symbols carry out meanings which relate to the influences of Islamic and pre-Islamic cultures in the past. Meru, tree of life, lotus, and banjaran sari may have derived from pre-Islamic culture, while the river, mosque and floral symbols indicate the presence of Islamic influence. This article underlines that Taman Ghairah has Islamic and Pre-Islamic cultural influences, reflecting the convergence of diverse backgrounds in Acehnese culture

Abstract

The growth of congregation activities in Aceh's old mosques has contributed to the area expansion of the old mosques. This article examines three case studies of old mosques in Aceh that represent three scenarios of spatial expansion, including:  mihrab extension integrated into the old mosque, side expansion attached to the old building, and expansion by adding a new mosque building. Three old mosques under study were Teungku Di Anjong Mosque in Banda Aceh, the Asal Penampaan Mosque in Gayo Lues, and the Gunong Kleng Mosque in West Aceh. This paper aims to analyze the mosque's spatial connection from three architectural aspects:  (1) Pattern of Additional Area, (2) Functionality and Other Features, (3) The Architectural Forms and Materiality of the old and new mosques. A qualitative study was employed through the analysis of architectural and visual images of the three mosques. The study found that adding new spaces to the three mosques significantly divides old and new mosques. The main function of the mosque as a place of worship intertwines with its function as a center of cultural activities as found in the old and new spaces. Furthermore, the old mosque architecture influenced modern mosques, although not completely. The old form harmonized with new materials to reconcile with contemporary construction methods.

Abstract

From August to September 2023, Museum Aceh held a temporary exhibition entitled "Rahasia Peradaban dalam Aksara." The exhibition highlights the collection of philology (ancient manuscripts) as the object of the exhibition. The manuscripts consist of Qur'anic verses, Islamic scriptures, history, and past mantras, most of which are written in Arabic calligraphy in Malay. By using a qualitative descriptive methodology, this study investigates the spatial configuration of philological collections containing religious material within the context of interior design and architecture. In addition, this study also aims to investigate how various vitrines can protect the manuscripts containing the Qur'an, religious books, and mantras. This study indicated that exhibition spaces without enormous walls have diverse uses. Additionally, the arrangement of exhibition content according to the geographical origin of the collection and the chronological categorization of the collection established the relationship between regions. To conserve the manuscripts and provide philological information, the exhibition introduced a set of vitrines made out of transparent closed boxes and loose panels

Abstract

Socio-political conditions in a region have a substantial impact on architectural identity. Two contemporary events in Aceh: the 2004 tsunami and the Free Aceh Movement and the Republic of Indonesia conflict, impacted socio-political circumstances and architectural identities. This study revisits the architecture after those two contemporary events in Aceh by examining the socio-political processes and dynamics underlying its architectural representations. The research incorporates literature, theoretical data, and Aceh's architectural and urban history. This research also ties socio-political data to architectural phenomena after the two contemporary events. This research frames two main periods of architectural history after two contemporary events, namely Post-Tsunami 2004 and Post-Conflict. In the post-tsunami 2004 period, there are three architectural phenomena:  the shifting perspective of safe and vulnerable places, the new 'Tsunami' typology, and the revival of the old typology. While in the post-conflict period, there are also three architectural phenomena: the search for Islamic architecture, the return of regionalism, and architecture anomalies.

Abstract

This article analyses the impact of the Majapahit architectural style on the Sultanate of Aceh, drawing inspiration from the 'Majapahit Style' as defined within Balinese architecture. Studies of Aceh Sultanate Architecture reveal features resembling the Majapahit Style, suggesting a cultural and historical connection. This study examines the historical context and compares architectural and urban typologies in Majapahit and Aceh through a literature review and analysis of artefacts. It identifies two key typologies demonstrating Majapahit influence: Religious Structures and Royal Urban Landscapes. This analysis critiques the conventional narratives that categorise architectural history into discrete religious periods (Hindu, Buddhist, or Islamic), highlighting the interconnections and varied histories in architecture and urban planning. The findings highlight the significance of acknowledging the cross-cultural influences that have shaped Aceh's built environment, challenging simplistic classifications based on religion or culture. This research illustrates the persistent impact of Majapahit architectural traditions on the Sultanate of Aceh particularly in the adoption of Meru-style mosques and urban planning approaches. The study emphasises the relationship between culture and religion influencing architectural expression, promoting a more profound comprehension of Aceh's built environment.

Abstract

Abstract

The oyster seeker community in Alue Naga relies on the coastal environment for finding, cultivating, harvesting, processing, and selling oysters. The spatial dynamics of interaction among humans, oysters, and the coastal environment that generates income for the oyster-seeking community remains thoroughly underexplored. This study investigates the spatial mechanisms of income-generating spaces created by oyster seeker activities in Alue Naga, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The research aims to explore the spatial patterns formed by the activities and practices of oyster seekers that contribute to their daily income. This study employs a design-driven research method, utilising a qualitative approach shaped by design thinking, spatial sensitivity, and a thorough architectural understanding using meaning from interviews and on-site observations. The research indicates that income-generating activities in Alue Naga oyster seeker village are established through three different spatial mechanisms: 1) the utilisation of land and water border areas, 2) the use of time and domestic space as components in the income-generating process, and 3) social aspects as the engine of spatial mechanism to generate income. This research also reveals that coastal environments can generate spatial mechanisms that shape income-generating spaces for coastal communities, which should be considered when designing spaces, architecture, and urban contexts.
