Abstract

http://dx.doi.org/10.17014/ijog.vol4no3.20095Diagenetic process records could be observed based on the petrography and XRD mineralogy labo- ratory analyses from thirty-two samples of limestone taken from the Rajamandala Formation at Pawon Cave Section, West Bandung. These laboratory analyses show that the rocks have partially been affected by a dolomitization. The dolomitization recorded at the limestone is a fabric selective dolomitization of the rock matrix, continued to the whole components of the limestone. The dolomite crystals are generally idiotopic to xenotopic mosaic rhombohedral in shapes with fine to moderate crystal sizes. Dolomite mainly consists of magnesium ion initiated from water formation trapped soon after the rock deposited. The middle part of the Rajamandala Formation, which is commonly affected by dolomitization is generally associated with meteoric water dissolution and creates several caves.

Abstract

DOI: 10.17014/ijog.v1i1.173Limestones of the Baturaja Formation occur at Air Rambangnia traverse, South Ogan Komering Ulu, South Sumatra, and they are used as objects for microfacies studies. The microfacies studies are based on a detailed petrographic analysis of thirty four limestone samples, taken from the traverse. Four types of the limestones are identified such as wackestone, packstone, grainstone, and floatstone. At least five microfacies form the limestone succesion of the Baturaja Formation. They are interpreted as sedimentary facies of very restricted bay and pond, back reef local slope, slope and shelf edge, winnowed platform edge sand, and reef flank facies.

Abstract

DOI: 10.17014/ijog.v6i4.127Laboratory test of complete petrophysic parameters encompasing water absorption, compressive strength, Los Angeles abrasive strength, Rudellof abrasive strength, and wear resistance with Na2SO4 has been carried out for igneous and carbonate rocks taken from Kulonprogo Mountains region. Statistical verification of the data exhibits variation of correlation coefficients among parameters ranging from medium to very high value. The values of petrophysic test results are determined by the rock types. The result of this study is useful to estimate the accuracy of values of each parameter test result in Geological Survey Institute Laboratory using regression formula representing each relationship.

Abstract

DOI: 10.17014/ijog.v7i2.138Limestone diagenetic records of Sentolo Formation have been studied in order to trace the history of the geological processes after the deposition of the rocks. A stratigraphic measure traverse was made in Hargorejo Village, Kulonprogo District, to identify the petrological characteristics of the Sentolo Formation. Limestone samples were taken along this traverse, and were used for a petrographic analysis. The analysis of thirtyeight limestone samples shows that the type is dominated by bioclastic grainstones which have been affected by various kinds of diagenetic processes after the deposition. The diagenetic processes recorded under the polarization microscope include cementation, replacement, bioturbation, micritization, recrystallization, dolomitization, compaction, fracturing, and leaching.

Abstract

DOI: 10.17014/ijog.v7i3.143This study is focused on the provenance and diagenetic processes affecting the sandstones of Lati Formation cropping out at Berau Area, East Kalimantan Province. Petrographic analysis of twenty-two samples from this formation shows that these sandstones are classified as litharenite, feldspathic litharenite, sublitharenite, feldspathic wacke, and lithic wacke, which are partially calcareous. Preserved diagenetic processes were visible on the petrographic analysis including cementation, replacement, dolomitization, compaction, and dissolution. The provenance of these sandstones is dominated by granitic rocks initiated from tectonic setting of rifted continental margin, transported toward southeast.

Abstract

Fine-grained pyroclastic rocks  found in the Cibadak area, Sukabumi divided into two groups, namely Tertiary tuff composing of Jampang Formation and Quarternary tuff as the result of  young volcanic eruptions. The relationship between mineralogy and geochemistry of those tuffs are discussed in this paper. Laboratory testing was conducted on fifty rock samples taken from the field. A kind of mineralogy composing the rock can be identified by the XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) mineralogy test, while the major oxide of the rock can be calculated with the XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) geochemistry test. The XRD mineralogy test shows  two secondary mineral that becomes the differentiation between the two tuffs are zeolites and clay minerals. The zeolites present at most of the Tertiary tuffs as a result of the rock alteration which involves an increasing in formation temperature and pressure. Clay minerals are mostly present at the Quarternary tuffs as a result of rock wheathering on the surface. The zeolite and clay minerals are associated with almost all chemical oxides of the rocks. The chemical oxides including SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, K2O, TiO, and MnO. The XRF rock-chemically characters show there are no differences of the chemical oxide components on both of these pyroclastic rock groups. Keywords: mineralogy, geochemistry, tuff, Tertiary, Quarternary.

Abstract

Bioclastic limestone of the Baturaja Formation cropping out in the Muaradua area, South Sumatera, is a good research object for microfacies analysis. Polarized microscopic study has revealed that the, bioclastic, limestones are predominantly reef-flank and local back-reef basin deposits. The results of T, F, and P tests of the limestones show a significant difference in their carbonate and terrigenous grains, as well as in their neomorphic materials between the deposits. On the other hand, their matrices, cements, and porosities are of no significant difference. Keywords: reef-flank, back-reef, carbonate grains, petrography
