Abstract

Jane Eyre is a novel written in the early nineteenth century (1847). It depicts the English society of the upper, middle and lower class and their habits and attitudes towards life. The opening of the novel points to social class, wealth and marriage as its major theme. Throughout the novel, the relationship between social awareness of class and marriage, especially dealing with money or property are highlighted, the reason why society tends to consider about social class, money and property in finding a suitable partner to marry. This paper relies on the examples from the novel to show how nineteenth-century women imagined their marriage. In terms of women’s social rights and roles, Charlotte Bronte tries to open readers' eyes to the idea that women's abilities should not be limited only to the sphere of the family. Bronte’s novel does not only attack Victorian class structure but also the issue of gender.  Keywords : marriage, wealth, property, women’s roles, gender

Abstract

This study explores the culture shock portrayed in Sashi’s character of English Vinglish film by Gauri Shinde. The purpose of this study is to describe the kinds of phases of culture shock engaged by Sashi as the analyzed character. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The English Vinglish film by Gauri Shinde and the film script were the primary data of the study, whereas, the secondary data were taken from the books, journals, and articles that related to the research. The results of the study shows that Sashi as the main character in English Vinglish film encounters four phases of culture shock; they are honeymoon, crisis, recovery, and adjustment.

Abstract

Artikel ini merupakan laporan Kegiatan Pengabdian pada Masyarkat (PKM) Universitas Islam Sultan Agung yang bekerja sama dengan Universitas Stikubank (UNISABANK) Semarang, dalam bentuk pelatihan mendongeng bagi wali murid KB/TK Ki Ageng Selo Semarang untuk kegiatan belajar di rumah di masa Pandemi Covid-19. Sebenarnya telah terjadi sedikit perubahan topik kegiatan PKM dari Upgrading Ketrampilan Mendongeng bagi Para Guru KB/TK menjadi Pelatihan Mendongeng bagi Para Wali Murid sebab hal ini dirasa sangat penting untuk mendukung kegiatan belajar di rumah selama masa pandemik. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa para wali murid (kebanyakan para ibu) memiliki semangat yang tinggi selama pelatihan dan kebanyakan mereka siap mempraktekkan mendongeng di rumah untuk membantu aktivitas akademik selama pandemi yang hanya dilakukan seminggu sekali beupa laporan perkembangan fisik dan mental siswa. Simpulan kegiatan PKM ini adalah bahwa pelatihan semacam ini hendaknya dilakukan secara periodik meskipun setalah pandemi berlalu.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out 1) how learners in a specific teaching-learning context namely process-based academic essay writing perceived the importance of corrective feedbacks (CF); 2) what CF was expected the most; 3) in what way learners preferred to have their CF  provided; and 4) how learners perceived the importance of grammar teaching. It was conducted at English Literature Department of a university in Central Java Indonesia. Forty two students who were taking Essay Writing course served as the subjects for the study. The course itself was delivered in a process-based writing in which content development and rhetoric were given more emphasis than grammar accuracy was. Data for the study were collected by questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with 5 guided questions. The findings suggest that learners still considered CFs as highly important and useful for their writing improvement. Learners expected to have comprehensive CFs of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, organization and punctuation, and CF on grammar was the most preferred one. In terms of CF provision technique, underlying and making notes were the most preferred techniques. Finally, this study concludes that the shift of approach from a product-based to a process-based did not significantly change learners’ focus from forms to content.

Abstract

This study aims to analyzing the characterization of Dawson Cole and to find out the characteristics of masculinity through Dawson Cole’s portrayal. This study focuses on the main character Dawson Cole who has the characteristics of masculinity. It explaining and analyzing the characterization of Dawson Cole using Edward Jones’s characterization theory and Dawson Cole's characteristics of masculinity using Janet Saltzman Chafetz's concept. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. This study finds the masculinity and its characteristics of the main character Dawson Cole. Based on the references used in this study, Dawson's characterization could be found in five ways, they are. characterization through appearance, characterization through dialogue, characterization through external action, characterization through internal action, and characterization through the reaction of other characters. Dawson also has seven masculinity characteristics, they are: physical, a function of the man, sexually aggressive, emotion, intelligence, interpersonal, and other personal.

Abstract

Psychoanalysis is a Freudian branch of science that studies human psychology and can express the human soul. The links between psychoanalysis and literature are undeniable. The film Black Swan (2010) was chosen as the subject of the study because it contains some anxiety problems that the main character shows using Sigmund Freud’s Anxiety Theory. The purpose of this research was to examine the anxiety felt by the main character in the film Black Swan (2010). The research methodology is qualitative variables. The study reports the findings of the analysis in sentences or descriptive forms such as dialogues, monologues, and narratives, are used. Based on Sigmund Freud’s theory, this study describes two types of anxiety: neurotic and realistic anxieties as portrayed by Nina. The first is the Neurotic Anxiety that Nina, the main character, suffers from. The second is Realistic Anxiety portrayed by the main character Nina.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing symbols that represent hijab as depicted in The Proudest Blue The Story of Hijab and Family written by Ibtihaj Muhammad and S.K. Ali and illustrated by Hatem Aly. This study was a qualitative study that analyze a text, so that the data were in the form of sentences and illustrations taken from the book. The data were collected by reading the book, identifying the data, and classifying the data. Then, the collected data were analyzed using the semiotic theory from Peirce. Based on the findings, there were five symbols representing hijab. The first two symbols are related to the authors’ choice of color. The author uses the pink to illustrate that hijabs are related to love and the blue color that is related to religious symbol of piety and chastity or sincerity. The blue color was the most dominant symbol in the book. In addition, the authors recommend that hijab is not a whisper, a laugh, and a tablecloth. These three symbols represent hijabs as something strong, not a joke to be laughed at and not only a thing to cover. All symbols used by the author are positive ones which challenge the negative stereotypes about hijab in which it is associated with radicalism and terrorism.
