Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating attitude and anxiety of Indonesian lecturers in writing English papers for international publications, together with the influence of gender and functional grades on them. It involved lecturers of a private university in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia (n=62) who were attending a training on English academic writing especially designed to help them prepare manuscripts for international publications. Data were collected by questionnaires and analyzed using t-test and ANOVA. The study found that the attitude toward writing was positive. Three aspects of attitude namely behavioral, cognitive, and affective were all positive. The anxiety in writing English papers was found to be moderate and somatic anxiety was the type of anxiety the lecturers suffered the most. There was no difference on the attitude and level of anxiety across gender but there was a difference on the level of anxiety across functional grades. As attitude and anxiety predict the success of writing efforts, which may then affect the success of publication, the issue of attitude and anxiety needs to be addressed in the effort of increasing the productivity of Indonesian lecturers in making international publications.

Abstract

Indonesian lecturers are now encouraged to publish papers in international journals so that they can better disseminate research findings and innovations globally.  However, many of them have the problems with English language mastery. This study was aimed at identifying and analyzing language problems of the Indonesian university lecturers in writing English academic papers for international publications. The subjects of the study were 66 randomly selected lecturers of various disciplines other than English Education and English Literature. The data were collected by questionnaire and English writing tasks on phrases, sentences, and paragraphs which were then analyzed descriptively. The results show that language errors and mistakes in grammar, syntax, vocabulary, spelling and word forms were all found in the subjects’ writings.  In writing academic papers for international publications, university lecturers faced language problems as constructing phrases and sentences, choosing and using appropriate vocabulary and terms relevant to their topic of study as well as translating their Indonesian sentences into English.

Abstract

This study investigated English Education student teachers’ voices about teaching internship programs to develop their pedagogical competence. The study involved 29 English student teachers of an English Education study program who were selected purposively after they completed their internship programs. A mixed-method research design was adopted, and data were collected by a questionnaire and interviews. The finding suggests that the internship program helped them develop their pedagogical competence. The mean score of the questionnaire to measure their perception of the benefit of the internship program was 64.21, which belongs to the high category.  Eighteen (18) respondents (62.07%) perceived that the program highly developed their pedagogical competence and the rest (37.93) perceived it moderately did. No respondent perceived that it had a low effect on the development of their pedagogical competence.  The qualitative data also suggest that the student teachers could positively benefit from the internship program in terms of their improved understanding of students’ strengths and weaknesses, their understanding of curriculum and syllabus, teaching media, and teaching strategy to improve the learning process. With all the positive effects, a teaching internship program can be a tangible facility to improve pedagogical competence.

Abstract

Writing is one amongst the important skills learned in English. In writing, people express their ideas and opinions. In this era of advanced communication technology, the use of social media to teach and assist students to learn is common for educators. This research investigated the effectiveness of using Instragram in teaching writing of descriptive texts.  As pre-experimental research, this research used written tests of descriptive texts as the main instrument and interview as the supplementary data collection technique. The samples of this research were eleventh grade students of Social one of a public senior high school in Semarang. The result of this research showed that there was a significant difference on the students’ ability of writing descriptive texts before and after the treatment. The interview responses also indicated that using Instagram post as visual media for learning descriptive was effective. In conclusion Instagram posts as visual media in teaching descriptive texts can improve student’s writing ability of descriptive text.

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan PKM ini yaitu pengadaan Brosur Dwibahasa Obyek Wisata Desa Menari, yang terletak di Desa Ngrawan, Kecamatan Getasan, Kabupaten Semarang, Provinsi Jawa Tengah dalam rangka peningkatan layanan wisata pada tingkat international. Hal tersebut dilakukan mengingat semakin meningkatnya animo pengujung obyek wisata tersebut baik dalam maupun manca negara. Metode yang digunakan dalam PKM ini adalah menggali informasi sebanyak-banyanknya melalui wawancara mendalam dengan Ketua Pokdarwis (Kelompok Sadar Wisata) Ki Tanu Wijaya, yaitu Bapak Trisno, yang akrab dipanggil Kang Tris. Wawancara meliputi informasi terkait dengan paket-paket yang tersedia dan bisa dinikmati oleh wisatawan baik domestic maupun manca negara. Hasil wawanara dikemas menjadi Brosur Dwibahasa yaitu bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Brosur tersebut telah dicetak edisi mewah dan sudah dapat dipakai sebagai sarana penyebaran informasi oleh bagian marketing Obyek Wisata Desa Menari, Getasan Kabupaten Semarang untuk para calon wisatawan.  Kata kunci: brosur dwibahasa; desa menari; layanan wisata,  Abstract This community service on issuing Bilingual Brochure on “Desa Menari” Tourist Destination, located at Ngrawan Village, Getasan District, Semarang Regency, Central Java aims at promoting tourism services at international level. This was done in response to the increasing numbers of  both domestic and foreign visitors. The method employed was to explore as much as possible any information through in-depth interview with the Chair of Ki Tanu Wijaya Pokdarwis (Tourism Awareness Club), namely Mr. Trisno, best-known as Kang Tris. The interview focused on any information related to tourism packages available for enjoyment by both domestic and foreign visitors. The results of the interview were then presented in a bilingual brochure of Indonesian and English languages. The brochure has been printed and is ready for marketing use to attract potential visitors to enjoy Desa Menari Ngrawan Village, Getasan District, Semarang Regency.   Keywords: bilingual brochure; desa menari; tourism services

Abstract

Self-efficacy, which is defined as people’s judgment on their ability to carry out tasks and exercise control over events, is believed to be determinant in the success of learning and career aspiration.  The study was conducted to measure students’ self-efficacy in making English business communication, their career aspiration, and the relationship between them. Sixty one students served as the respondents for the study.  Data were collected by using Likert-typed questionnaires after students attended an ESP designed to improve their English business communication skills. It found that students had high self-efficacy in making English business communication and high career aspiration. Between these variables lies a significant positive correlation in moderate level (0.611).

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan membantu para guru MGMP Bahasa Inggris Madrasah Aliyyah (MA) Kabupaten Demak Jawa Tengah melakukan inovasi dengan membuat video pembelajaran dengan aplikasi Wondershare Filmora. Kegiatan diikuti oleh 29 guru Bahasa Inggris dan dilaksanakan secara luring pada Sabtu 22 Januari 2022 berupa pelatihan dan workshop operasi dasar aplikasi Filmora. Kegiatan dilanjutkan dengan pendampingan secara daring selama 2 minggu. Saat kegiatan daring, grup Whatsapp digunakan sebagai media komunikasi dan konsultasi antara Tim Pengabdi dan peserta, serta untuk membagikan karya video yang diselesaikan. Kegiatan berjalan baik dibuktikan dengan kemampuan peserta menyelesaikan video pembelajaran yang ditugaskan. Survei umpan balik menunjukkan para peserta sangat positif dengan kegiatan ini. Koneksi internet yang kurang stabil serta kapasitas perangkat (laptop) beberapa peserta yang kurang memadai telah menjadikan aktivitas pelatihan dan pembuatan video berjalan agak lambat.ABSTRACTThis community service program was aimed at assisting the members of Madrasah Aliyyah English Teacher Association of Demak Regency Central Java to make innovation in their teaching by making instructional videos with Wondershare Filmora video editing application. Twenty-nine teachers participated in the training and workshop program conducted offline on Saturday January 2022 to practice the basic operations of Filmora. It was followed by an online assistance and consultation program for two weeks. Whatsapp group was used to facilitate communication and consultation between the Team of community service and the participants, and to share the participants’ works. The program worked well proven by the completion of the instructional videos assigned to the participants. The feedback survey shows participants’ positive responses. Unstable internet connection and low device (laptop) capacity have made the training and video-making activities progressed rather slowly.

Abstract

Keragu-raguan karir merupakan masalah yang sering dihadapi oleh siswa sekolah menengah. Akhir dari fase pendidikan siswa sekolah menengah seharusnya sudah mengambil keputusan karir dan tidak membuat keputusan karir lagi. Keraguan tersebut akan berpengaruh signifikan terhadap keputusan karir yang diambil saat mengambil jurusan pendidikan tinggi dan pendidikan kejuruan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji hubungan efikasi diri keputusan karir dengan keraguan karir pada siswa sekolah menengah atas. Metode penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif, dengan partisipan penelitian sebanyak 378 siswa SMA dari dua sekolah. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah skala keraguan karir dan skala efikasi diri keputusan karir. Temuan dari penelitian ini adalah terdapat hubungan antara efikasi diri terhadap keputusan karir dan keraguan karir. Tidak ada perbedaan antara efikasi diri terhadap keputusan karir dan keraguan karir pada siswa laki-laki dan perempuan, juga tidak ada perbedaan dalam efikasi diri terhadap keputusan karir dan keragu-raguan karir berdasarkan pilihan jurusan di sekolah menengah atas. Penelitian ini memiliki implikasi bahwa keputusan karir self-efficacy memiliki kontribusi terhadap keraguan karir yang dialami oleh siswa.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has changed the lives of the global society. Education is among the sectors which are seriously affected. To contain the fast-spreading of COVID-19 and to protect students and teachers from being infected, temporarily schools were closed. Teaching and learning were conducted online from home. This new teaching and learning paradigm has brought a lot of challenges to teachers who were not familiar yet with the nature of online learning. To assist English teachers, a Team of Community Service from the Department of English Education Universitas Islam Sultan Agung (UNISSULA) organized a training to help them design online learning materials using the iSpring application. The training was attended by English teachers of Madrasah Aliyyah (MA) in Demak Regency as the members of the English Teachers Association popularly known as MGMP. The training covered presentation and workshops conducted offline at MA Negeri Demak under a strict implementation of health protocols. Offline training was followed by home assignments and online consultations between the teachers and the Team from the university. The training ran well and was very useful for the teachers to improve their ability in designing online learning materials.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of the DRTA strategy in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in English reading. It applied a pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design. The samples of this study were 37 students of the XI-MIPA of Madrasah Aliyah Miftahul Huda Tayu. The instrument for collecting data was a test. It was six questions of analytical exposition text presented in an essay-type form. A t-test was used to analyze the mean score difference between the control and experiment groups. After treatment, there was an improvement in students’ critical thinking skills. The value of t0 is 2.274 and ttable is 2.030. The result of the computation was 2.274 > 2.030, while the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.029 < 0.05. There was a significant difference in the students’ critical thinking skills between those who were taught reading using the DRTA strategy and those who were not. The DRTA strategy effectively enhanced the student’s critical thinking skills in reading.
