This article discusses the Haqa’iq al-Tafsir by al-Sulami against the extant accusation of being Shi’ite. It is a certainly Sunnite commentary accumulated from their-own traditional sources as well as representing Sunnite theological principles. Despite its contentious title as well as the use of weak hadiths, the nature of Sulami’s tafsir was relatively free from either Shi’ite elements or mystico-philosophical notions contradictory to the spirit of Sunnite orthodoxy. Al-Sulami’s tafsir is to be classified ma’thur, but it conceives spiritual significances (haqa’iq) that might have been set beyond the common objectives of Qur’anic tafsir in general. It is not a general tafsir for laymen, but an esoteric interpretation of the Qur’anic verses for the elites of sufi readers.

A new pattern of writing Indonesian tafsir emerges from the modernists desire to publish Qur’ānic commentary in Indonesian language. Mahmud Yunus was the first Muslim scholar who wrote theTafsir Qur’an Karim as the first Indonesian Qur’ānic commentary in the modern era. Three elements of modernity marking the new pattern of modern Indonesian Qur’ānic commentary were introduced by Mahmud Yunus, namely the use of Latin alphabets, the brief character of writing, and the introduction of scientific tendency, all of which can be considered the newly invented elements of modern Qur’ānic commentary. Being analyzed from a socio-hermeneutical perspective this piece investigates the ingredients of Mahmud Yunus’ reforming ideas interpolated along the course of his academic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, this writing also extrapolates the wider angle of sosial dynamics within Indonesian academic climate from the second half of the twentieth century.

This study discusses how the Ḥadīth related to the pandemic and how the practice of a ḥadīth boarding school - Darus-Sunnah in South Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia- deal with this issue using a qualitative, and descriptive-analytical method with an anthropological-phenomenological paradigm, this research identifies and constructs their discussion on pandemic and their effort to deal with it. The study finds that Darus-Sunnah bases their discussion about the Covid-19 outbreak on Ḥadīth sources. It also finds that understanding the Prophet’s traditions can thoroughly help to prevent the spread of Covid-19 as the Ḥadīth sources suggest to avoid the possibility for the viruses to transmit to others, and recommend to collaborate between religious, government, and health care agents in combatting the pandemic.

Islam in Russia provided a portrait of the people who have learned from the cultural hegemony. Intimidation efforts against the spread and absorption of some of the ideas will not work, if it does not consider the effort is more persuasive. Despite these efforts can bring consequences unexpected by the authorities, but when it changes gradually raise critical awareness of the traditional Muslim society at that time, about the need to reform mindset that they hold for this, as is the case in the emergence of a reform movement of Islamic thought contained in several prominent stage. This study we will using Antonio Gramsci’s ideas which explain that the concept of hegemony by the ruling class is not merely ruled by force, but it must be done in more persuasive ways. In this persuasive ways subordinate classes are forced to learn and see themselves through the lens of the ruler, by the way thanks to the education provided.

Taking hermeneutical approaches, the present research tries to provide a new form of Qur’ānic interpretation of supplications comprised within the history of Abraham and Moses. Two ways to be conducted in this research: First, to apply Hirsch’s hermeneutics theory in reconstructing meanings as found in classical tafsir. Second, to excavate significances of the supplication verses on the basis of their validly verbal meanings. This last attempt is to apply some reconciliatory theses of Palmer’s “hermeneutics manifesto” to enliven meanings. Keywords: Hermeneutic of the Qur’ān, theory of holy scripture interpretation, verses of supplication, history of the prophets.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i6.997

This study aims to reveal portray Quranic verses interpreted using the scientific style of interpretation by M. Quraish Shihab in his Tafsir al-Misbah. Its existence has been revealed by Moh. Anwar Syarifuddin and Jauhar Azizy in their 2014 report on "Islamic Relations and Science and Technology in the Indonesian Tafsir Literature", but using only the Madaniyya verses of the five first chapters of the Qur’an. The present writer examined there surahs: al-Nahl (the Bees), al-Naml (the Ants) and al-Ankabut (the Spider), all of which are animal names but categorized as Makkiyah instead. Research question of this piece is what is proven to be the scientific style of interpretation within the interpretation of those three surahs in Tafsir al-Misbāḥ? This is qualitative research along with the descriptive analytical method. The findings strengthen the previous findings which also show a very high level of appreciation indicated by the writer of al-Misbah in interpreting 33 Quranic verses within their scientific color of interpretation, in which it is a lot higher than the previous findings on the Madaniyya verses.

This piece explicates mystical interpretation conducted by the Sufi Sahl ibn Abd Allah al-Tustari on certain Qur’anic verses illustrating cosmic symbols of the Sufi ontology. In this symbolic interpretation the understanding of natural phenomena given in the form of analogy that is more psychologically oriented, for example, earth that is signified as “heart” which is low in nature because of its engagement with the matter referred to be a symbol of “darkness”. On contrary, the sky is interpreted as an element of height that belongs to the role of “enlightening”. The symbolism of the universe that is signified with its psychic understanding is the main ideas Sahl Tustari’s mystical ontology that centers around the mystical concept of the light of Muhammad, which has vast influence within the development of Islamic mystical thought in later period. The main inquiry of the present paper is what kinds of metaphysical concepts described by Sahl al-Tustari in his mystical interpretation to the Qur’anic verses illustrating the natural phenomena? Discussion begins with earth as the symbol of lowliness, then explaining the sky as symbols of the natural representation of the higher world. Filling the gap between the contested cosmological concepts Sahl Tustari offers his mystical concept of the light of Muhammad that becomes an intermediary channel for the lowly position of man in his way back to God.
