Abstract

This paper discusses inheritance discourse based on verses of the Qur’an according to modern interpreters, Muḥammad Shaḥrūr with Munawir Sjadzali. Both interpreters are appointed because they can be considered to have tried in their respective contexts to answer the emergence of ambiguous attitudes in implementing inheritance law from Muslim societies. Muḥammad Shaḥrūr understands and applies it in a way that is different from the opinions and concepts, as seen in the 'four classical patterns of calculation' (al-amalīyāt al-arba 'fī al-ḥisāb) as well as in social aspects, such as the concept of patrilinialism in society and the spirit of kinship and family spirit and ethnicity which became the benchmark for the distribution of inheritance in the past century or in political aspects, such as overlapping concepts of inheritance law which confuse ownership, law and prophetic authority. From this there is a clear relevance between the boundary theory proposed by Shaḥrūr and the efforts to reform Islamic law which are expected to grow with justice and be able to answer the needs of the community. Whereas Sjadzali developed the concept of inheritance contained in the Qur'an, to look for the relevance of Islamic teachings to the times, especially in the context of Modern Indonesia. Since al-Qur'an is multidimensional, as hudan li al-nās, the concept of Sjadzali's inheritance law has its own value, namely by teaching the principle of equality as the division of men is twice as large as women is no longer relevant. He also did not explain the division of inheritors who have an upward line adequately. This is because Sjadzali only sees from the side of the historicity of the region as the birth of his 1: 1 inheritance concept, without regard to other aspects such as heirs and heirs.

Abstract

Abstract

This article is the result of research that discusses the belief of some Lamongan people in the role of primus inter pares which is considered to have the ability to interpret natural phenomena and human destiny, which is practiced in istikharah and weton calculations in the wedding tradition in Lamongan. This habit can be found in modern society, even today there are still many people who still adhere to this tradition, so it is necessary to respect the diversity of religions and cultures. This phenomenon is an illustration of social religious facts in Lamongan whose existence cannot be denied, thus strengthening the assumption that istikharah and weton calculations have been responded to by Muslims in various practices. For example, asking community leaders or people deemed capable to provide solutions among various social problems. The practice of istikharah and weton calculations basically have the same goal, which is to uncover the truth, even though the two come from different foundations.

Abstract

This article examines the politicization of religion in Indonesia, with a focus on the Quran’s transformation into a political and social commodity. Through a qualitative case study conducted in Jakarta and West Java, involving 42 informants from various sectors, including religious, political, academic, and community, the study revealed that sacred texts are frequently decontextualized and manipulated to legitimize political agendas. The Quran’s instrumentalization has intensified social polarization, undermined theological integrity, and weakened public trust in both religious institutions and democratic processes. The analysis identifies four main typologies of manipulation: political delegitimization, instrumental legitimacy, explicit desecration, and commodification within the digital and commercial sphere. Using the maqâs{id al-sharîah framework, these practices obviously violate fundamental Islamic objectives—particularly h{ifz{ al-dîn, h{ifz{ al-aql, and h{ifz{ al-nasl. However, three Indonesian cultural values (cooperation, communal harmony, and peaceful coexistence) offer cultural resilience countering these tendencies through inclusive education and critical religious literacy. The study concludes that genuine religiosity must be rooted in the Quran’s ethical application rather than its political instrumentalization. Restoring the Quran's sanctity requires a synthesis of scriptural fidelity, civic responsibility, and cultural wisdom to ensure religion functions as a unifying moral force rather than a divisive political tool. This study offers two key contributions. Theoretically, it introduces a comprehensive framework for interpreting the Quran as both a sacred text and a politicized social commodity. Practically, it presents evidence-based strategies to help policymakers, religious authorities, and civil society mitigate religious politicization while promoting theological integrity and social unity within Indonesia’s pluralistic democracy.
