Abstract

This paper aims to explore Jean Baudrillard's thoughts on hyperreality theory which is used as a tool to examine the phenomenon of gamer hyperreality. According to the author, this is important considering the growing online game and its impact not only on social but also on the death of its players. This paper uses a literature study approach with the main source of the work of Jean Baudrillard. This paper concludes that: first, online games are a tangible form for gamers. Second, humans as a concrete form have become abstract as a result of online games. Third, games are algorithm manipulation, and this is what causes gamers to become addicted to playing online games. Fourth, hyperreality gives birth to hyperlife for gamers so that they have neglected social responsibilities. Keywords: Hyperreality, game online, gamer, hyperlife

Abstract

Today, the world is languishing in a patriarchal structure. This patriarchal domination not only harms women, but also men, children, the elderly, and marginalized groups. Gender mainstreaming extends its studies not only to femininity but to parenting (motherhood and fatherhood), early childhood. In addition, gender also extends to the realm of masculinity or male studies. In this case, the psychology of gender underlines this phenomenon with hegemonic masculinity discourse. Masculinity is seen from the dominance of the spaces of life both public and private. This paper examines the ideology of hegemonic masculinity as the most desirable theoretical response to Critical Men Studies (CSM). This elaboration of the Hegemonic Masculinity concept is useful as a 'binocular tool' that is operational for empirical studies of masculinity.

In the midst of the phenomenon that brings the trap and temptation to say “no” to life, Theory of Everything movie comes against it. The study tracks the narrative of existential twists in the film Theory of Everything (2014) which tells the life journey of famous science writer Stephen Hawking. This study uses the existentialism approach with the Clark and Braunn thematic analysis techniques. The existential themes that are exposed include: 1) faith and destiny; 2) freedom of will, choosing to live or die; 3) the empowering love; 4) suffering as an integral part of living; 5) humor, self-acceptance and achievement. All these themes can be summarized in the statement that life, however sweet and bitter, must still be lived. “Ja Sagen”: Say “yes” to life.

Abstract

This paper aims to show at once critics and solutions for the logic of critical education, which has recently been sporadically appropriated by educational institutions and communities in Indonesia. This paper uses the method of library research with primary sources, namely: The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intellectual Emancipation by Jacques Rancière. Findings shed light on several things, namely: 1) Rancière's critics of critical education which perpetuates the paradox of equality; 2) The experience of “the teacher who did not know”, Josep Jacotot who accidentally found a way of learning that emancipated his students; 3) Rancière’s criticism of the explicative order which perpetuated the myth of pedagogy. Therefore, the world is divided into two: superior intelligence and inferior intelligence. So that, it made up the imaginary distance, thus it tied the domination relation between the master of explicator and the subordinated ones; 4) Rancière’s critics of the fundamental assumptions of critical education that it puts equality as teleological fiction. In fact, it plunges us into a spiral of stultification. Rancière opposed it. Thus, the presupposition of equality must be put in place as an emancipatory point of departure; 5) the notion of natural universal teaching as a way of learning for everyone. The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intellectual Emancipation karya Jacques Rancière.

Abstract

Traditional images still dominate the representation of masculinity as a product of patriarchal ideology. This research examines the representation of masculinity among Generation Z in Bangka Island, exploring whether shifts occur or traditional norms persist. Using a social representation approach, the study investigated 178 Gen Z males through open questionnaires and interviews. They are called Bujang, which anchors for social representation of masculinity. Thematic analysis found that, in Gen Z’s perspective, masculinity focuses on Jadi Urang (being true men), and requires three dimensions: prosperity, sociability, and religiosity. Some norms of masculinity have changed, while others still adopt traditional masculinities in certain social configurations. In production relations, representation shows urang bujang ya begawi (men must work). In power relations, urang bujang belajer tanggungjawab (men have responsibility). In emotional relationships, kelaki jangen nanges (men don’t cry). These themes indicate both shifting and persistent elements of traditional masculinity norms.
