Abstract

This study examines the impacts of news authorship and news sources on environmental coverage in the Nigerian press to shed light on the roles they play in news construction. The study finds that journalists in conjunction with policy makers are the catalyst for environmental information, whereas citizens who are pivotal in creating relevant public opinion on environmental issues are left behind. The study reveals that investigative reporting lacks in environmental coverage because most coverage are events driven which explains why environmental news is reported as straight news and as such journalists rely heavily on official sources rather than subsidiary sources. The study opines that for proper environmental coverage, journalists must choose sources from both main and subsidiary actors and revert to proactive, investigative and interpretive reporting so as to make environmental stories relatable to the intended audiences.

Abstract

This study examines the evolution of blended learning (BL) research in higher education, focusing on its impact on English language proficiency (ELP) and alignment with Sustainable Development Goals. Using 200 Scopus-indexed articles published from 2020 to 2025, we applied Publish or Perish and VOSviewer for bibliometric analysis. Results show a pandemic-driven research surge, followed by a decline as institutions adapted. Thematic gaps emerged in the underuse of AI and gamification in ELP contexts. Geographic disparities were also evident, with minimal contributions from Global South regions. These patterns occurred because structural inequities limit digital access and research capacity in under-resourced areas. This analysis contributes by identifying emerging research priorities, supporting inclusive blended learning policies, and promoting South-South collaboration. The study has implications for advancing equitable and data-informed language education practices within hybrid learning models in alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Abstract

Teaching competency is pivotal in advancing higher education, particularly in preparing students to address sustainability challenges in the hospitality sector. This study develops a comprehensive framework that integrates the Sustainable Hospitality Education (SHE) Teacher Competency Scale with UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) competencies and the Islamic educational principles of tarbiyah (holistic nurturing), ta’dib (ethical formation), and ta’lim (knowledge cultivation). Employing a mixed-method design, qualitative data were gathered from semi-structured interviews with 20 academic experts, and quantitative data were collected from 304 undergraduate hospitality students. Thematic analysis and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified five key competency dimensions: Motivation and Values, Knowledge and Expertise, Pedagogical Competence, Sustainability Integration, and Collaborative Growth. The final 20-item scale demonstrated strong reliability and validity. The results highlight the significance of fostering educators’ ethical commitment, sustainability literacy, and collaborative engagement with industry stakeholders. For Islamic higher education institutions, the study provides a validated and context-sensitive framework for curriculum enhancement, professional development, and policy formulation. By aligning sustainability competencies with Islamic values of stewardship (khilafah) and social cooperation (ta’awun), the framework contributes to producing educators and graduates capable of leading transformative change toward a just and sustainable society.
