Abstract

During the Covid 19 Pandemic, lectures were carried out totally via online learning. This study aims at describing the EFL students’ perception on the issue. This study applied a descriptive method and involved 102 students of the English Education Study Program- Riau Kepulauan University. The questionnaire was in 5 Likert scale and open questions which was modified from three components of Information Technology Innovation-instrument by Moore and Benbasat namely relative advantage, ease of use, and compatibility. It also was settled up to get information on challenge, obstacles, and students’ negative opinion toward the online-learning. The data was taken at the end of even semester (July) on academic year 2019/2020, and it was distributed by sending online survey to the year 1 to 4 of English Education Study Program of UNRIKA. In analyzing the data, it was computed to get the frequencies and percentages. The results are displayed in the form of chart and tables, and it is found that students’ perception can be considered as the important factor in applying the online learning particularly in the Covid 19 pandemic era.

Abstract

This study aims at (1) identifying the target needs, and learning needs of students, (2) developing appropriate English speaking learning materials for grade VII students of SES Program at SMPIT ABY. This research was a research and development study consisting of seven steps: needs analysis, developing course grid, developing first draft, getting the expert judgment, trying out the materials, evaluating and revising the materials, and writing the final draft. The subjects were grade VII students of SES Program at SMPIT ABY. The data were collected using questionnaires and an interview guide. The results found that the target needs of grade VII students of SES program at SMPIT ABY are the English speaking learning materials which are related to Islamic contents. Their learning needs are related to the goal, input, setting, procedure, teachers’ role, and students’ role. Four units were developed based on the target and learning needs. The interval mean value of each task component in all units of the developed materials is between 2.52 Ẍ ≤ 3.27and 3.28 Ẍ ≤ 4.03. This indicates that, the materials are appropriate to grade VII students of SES Program at SMPIT ABY.Keywords: speaking, learning materials and saturday English school program

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the effectiveness of Rank Ordering Retell Strategy on reading comprehension of the eight grade students’ of SMP Advent Batam in academic year 2015/2016. The method was used in this research is experimental research, the research focused on True experimental Design. The population in this research was all students of eight grade students at SMP Advent Batam in academic year 2015/2016. The number of the entire students is 163. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to determine class of the research. The subject of the study was the grade VIII – 2 and VIII – 3. There were 32 students each class. The researcher conducted research in two classes. The first class (VIII – 2) was as experiment class and the second class (VIII – 3) as control class. The experiment class was taught reading narrative text using Rank Ordering Retell Strategy, while control class was taught reading narrative text using conventional strategy (lecture method). In analyzing the data, the researcher used a quantitative measurement to find the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement before conducted treatment the average of the students’ was 62.34 for experimental class and 64.22 for control class. While the average of the students’ achievement after conducted treatment in experimental class was 79.38 and in control class was 68.75. Based on this finding, it can be concluded that the used of Rank Ordering Retell Strategy gave significant effect in reading comprehension than the use of conventional strategy (lecture method).Keywords:  rank ordering retell strategy, reading comprehension, narrative text.

Abstract

Learning English for Elementary Students is different with Junior High School or Senior High School Students. It is due to the characteristic and learning style of children differ from adolescents and adults. Therefore, learning should be well-designed and concern the students’ characteristics and ages. The program was carried out to help elementary students in RW 16 Kavling Seroja to overcome the problems they faced in learning English which is often faced with the rules and form of the language in their learning. Learning activity was conducted by using songs related to the subject matter and concern their age. Learning was conducted every Saturday and Sunday for two months. The use of song in English learning can be considered as best tool because in addition to motivating students in learning, fostering fun atmosphere in learning, this activity is also useful in developing students’ vocabulary, listening skills and pronunciation. Songs can be used in different in learning the four aspects of English including listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The results of the implementation of this program in RW 16 Kavling Seroja gained positive responses from the students. It is proven by the students’ enthusiasm during the learning activity, the improvement of students’ motivation in learning, as well as the improvement of students’ English skills in the aspect of pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, and listening.
