Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the students’ perception of using video dubbing project in teaching speaking for fourth semester students UNRIKA in academic year 2018-2019. A set of questionnaires and open-ended interview were conducted to obtain the data. Data were categorized into three levels namely positive, neutral, and negative. The results revealed almost all students perceived positive perception towards the implementation of video dubbing project in teaching speaking. The result of interview was also in line with result obtained through questionnaires. Students admitted that they performed better speaking skill after the implementation of video dubbing. They also felt being engaged in learning activity and triggered them to be more active. They considered video dubbing was fun, challenging, and can be done anytime and anywhere.  In light of the findings, it can be considered as a favorable and effective teaching activity to enhance students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the kinds of figurative language and imagery in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift’s “1989” Album. Furthermore, in this research the researcher used qualitative descriptive method. The result of the study is presented in the form of paragraphs. The researcher analyzed the songs by reading them intensively and giving attention for each line. After that, the researcher examined the figurative language and imagery of the songs lyrics. After investigating the sentence in the songs lyrics, the researcher found eight kinds of figurative languages that are used in the songs lyrics, they are personification, metaphor, hyperbole, simile, oxymoron, allusion, litotes and metonymy. Six kinds of imagery also used in the songs lyrics, they are visual imagery, auditory imagery, organic imagery, kinesthetic imagery, tactile imagery and olfactory imagery. The most dominant of figurative language used is personification and the dominant imagery used is visual imagery. Keywords: figurative language, imagery, lyrics

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the whole speaking activities in teaching learning English for Senior High Schools in Batam based on teachers’ experiences by giving an open questionnaire and then categorizing the data collected using continuous comparison technique. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with naturalistic approach. The research setting is in Batam. The key instrument of this research is the researcher herself. The data are gathered through distributing questionnaire. The data are in the form of words, phrases and sentences. The data gathered were selected based on the type of the activity, named the categories and broke the data into some categories which then would be shown in tables. The result of the research shows that speaking activities for senior high schools in Batam can be divided into six types in general then broke down into 19 categories. Speaking activity in monolog was the most frequently used by teachers and dominated the activity. It occurred 36 times in teaching and learning process.Keywords: profile, speaking, teachers’ experiences

Abstract

In this research, there are many problems in learning process in the class. The problems are lack of vocabulary, and method of teaching vocabulary used. This research has purpose to students’ vocabulary mastery by using whispering game at the SMP Kartini II Batam academic Year 2015/2016. This research is quantitative research. The researcher used total sampling. The experimental class was taught using whispering game, whereas the control class was taught using lecturing method. In this research, the researcher gave 20 of questions in multiple choices form. The result of analysis can be concluded that there was significant effect. It was showed     (3,01 2,01) so  was rejected and  was accepted. The result of analysis can be concluded that the use of whispering game at SMP Kartini II Batam in academic Year 2015/2016  gave significant effect in the students’ activity in learning process than the use of close procedure. Keyword : whispering game, vocabulary mastery

Abstract

Learning English for Elementary Students is different with Junior High School or Senior High School Students. It is due to the characteristic and learning style of children differ from adolescents and adults. Therefore, learning should be well-designed and concern the students’ characteristics and ages. The program was carried out to help elementary students in RW 16 Kavling Seroja to overcome the problems they faced in learning English which is often faced with the rules and form of the language in their learning. Learning activity was conducted by using songs related to the subject matter and concern their age. Learning was conducted every Saturday and Sunday for two months. The use of song in English learning can be considered as best tool because in addition to motivating students in learning, fostering fun atmosphere in learning, this activity is also useful in developing students’ vocabulary, listening skills and pronunciation. Songs can be used in different in learning the four aspects of English including listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The results of the implementation of this program in RW 16 Kavling Seroja gained positive responses from the students. It is proven by the students’ enthusiasm during the learning activity, the improvement of students’ motivation in learning, as well as the improvement of students’ English skills in the aspect of pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, and listening.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the  correlation between students’ anxiety and students’ achievement in learning English. The research design was correlational research which consisted of two variables, independent and dependent variable. The sampling technique was probability sampling with cluster random sampling. The sample in this research was thirty nine students of X8 social class of SMAN 08 Batam. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz  was addressed to check the existence of students’ anxiety. The instrument to measure the students’ achievement was a diagnostic test which consists of listening and reading comprehension test. After tested the validity and reliability of the test by using SPSS V.16.0, the researcher distributed the test to the sample. Then, the researcher analysed the correlation by using Product Moment Formula by Pearson to correlate both students’ anxiety (X variable) and students’ achievement (Y variable). The result showed that the r count or Pearson correlation was 0.092. The r table for 39 respondents is 0.312. It means that r count is lower than r table and Ha is rejected and Ho is accepted. The r count showed -0.092. Hence, there was significant negative correlation between Students’ Anxiety and Students’ Achievement in learning English at the tenth grade students of Senior High School 08 Batam.
