Abstract

Abstract: This article examines the role of mainstream teachers in supporting children’s biliteracy development and bilingualism in a public primary school where English is the medium of instruction. It reports a research conducted in a public primary school in Australia. The research employs a longitudinal ethnographic approach to collect data on how the teachers perceive biliteracy and the extent to which the approaches they adopt impact on their biliteracy and bilingualism development. The research result demonstrates that the more supportive the teachers for biliteracy development and bilingualism are, the more constructivist their teaching approach is and the more varied the activities they encouraged in their classrooms to create opportunities for biliteracy and bilingualism engagement and learning are.

Abstract

Pembelajaran daring di masa pandemi COVID-19 menjadi tantangan bagi seluruh guru dan siswa agar tetap dapat mencapai tujuan pembelajaran secara maksimal, termasuk mencapai kompetensi komunikasi bahasa Inggris. Salah satu alternatif teknologi pembelajaran yang dapat digunakan adalah penggunaan WhatsApp Voice note dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris online. Aplikasi ini memiliki banyak kelebihan yang dapat dioptimalkan untuk membuat berbagai kegiatan belajar bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih menarik dan menyenangkan bagi siswa. Berbagai fitur yang terdapat pada aplikasi WhatsApp seperti berbagi dokumen, foto, file audio/video, berbagai emoji, konferensi panggilan audio/video, dan tentunya fitur pengiriman pesan suara atau WhatsApp Voice note serta dukungan kuota internet yang ada. tidak terlalu memberatkan dari segi biaya. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis memaparkan berbagai hasil penelitian penggunaan WhatsApp Voice note pada mata pelajaran berbahasa Inggris dalam proses kegiatan pembelajaran guru dan siswa di masa pandemi Covid-19.

Abstract

This research was aimed (1) To know the teacher’s perception towards task-based learning approach in teaching writing, (2) To know the implementation task-based learning approach in teaching writing, and (3) To know task-based learning approach impact on students’ writing skills. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was an English teacher and 20 students in the eighth grade at SMPN 1 Mimika Timur, Papua Tengah. The data was collected through observation checklist and semi-structure interviews. The result of this research showed that (1) the teacher has positive perception about task-based learning approach, namely can make students more active, more enthusiasm, and enjoyable, (2) implementation task-based learning approach in teaching writing at Indonesia junior high school the teacher used three stages, namely pre task, task cycle, and language focus, and (3) task-based learning gave positive impact on students writing skill, namely students can express their ideas, write their task more interesting, they are not afraid to share their ideas, can organize tasks, can avoid ambiguity, get new vocabulary, improve in language use, ensure the right form of words when writing and also enhance their knowledge in mechanical skills, such as capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
