Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to find out the level of the first year students of SMK Labor Binaan FKIP Universitas Riau in vocabulary mastery. The sample of this research is ADP 2 which was choosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The number of the student is 30 students. The data obtained by giving multiple choice test. About the test, the students are asked to choose the appropriate vocabulary based on the context of the test. The test consist of 7 indicators of vocabulary. There are synonym, antonym, collocation word, noun, verb, adjective and adverb. The result shows that the students score in vocabulary mastery is 54.79, and the students have problem in verb with mean score 32.26 % of correct answers and adverb with mean score 44.99%. In conclusion, from the result above shows that the students’ vocabulary mastery level of SMK Labor Binaan FKIP Universitas Riau is in mediocre level..Key Words: Study, Vocabulary, Mastery

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of the research is to find out the type of conceptual metaphor that is most frequently used in the headlines of the political news posted online on the website of The Jakarta Post. This research is conducted by using qualitative research which is descriptive analysis. The data collection technique of this research is a study document and uses MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure) as a method to analyze the data. The result shows that there are 183 headlines of political news using structural metaphor, 71 headlines of political news using ontological metaphor, and 31 headlines of political news using orientational metaphor. It is concluded that the structural metaphor is the most frequently used in headline news of The Jakarta Post, which mostly associated the concept of politics with the concept of war.Keywords: Conceptual Metaphor, Politics, Headline News, The Jakarta Post.

Abstract

This paper discusses the correlation between two variables, namely vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability of the first-year students at SMPN 1 Tebing Tinggi. The researcher used a quantitative research method as the data approach. The population consisted of the first-year students with a total of 124 students. The researcher used a simple random sampling technique and selected 32 students from all classes. The instruments used were two types of tests: multiple-choice tests and written tests. To analyze the data, the researcher used SPSS Statistics 25. The research results indicate that the first-year students of SMPN 1 Tebing Tinggi achieved a good level of vocabulary mastery and a mediocre level of writing descriptive text ability. The results also indicate that there is a correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability. The Rxy distribution of the coefficient correlation was 0.408. This means that there was a correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability of the first-year students at SMPN 1 Tebing Tinggi at a fair level. Thus, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hα) was accepted.

Abstract

This study investigates the learning strategies used by second-semester students in the English Education Study Program during reading and writing activities in the Intermediate Reading and Writing course. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the study involved 117 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire covering metacognitive, cognitive, and socioaffective strategies based on O’Malley and Chamot’s (1990) classification. The findings reveal that all three strategy categories were used at a high level, with socioaffective strategies being the most dominant, followed by metacognitive and cognitive strategies. Students showed strong help-seeking behavior and active monitoring of comprehension, yet demonstrated weaknesses in planning, peer feedback, and applying new grammar structures in their writing. These results suggest that students rely more on social support and vocabulary-based strategies rather than planning and grammar-oriented approaches, indicating the need for instructional practices that promote more balanced and autonomous learning.
