Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to find out the level of the first year students of SMK Labor Binaan FKIP Universitas Riau in vocabulary mastery. The sample of this research is ADP 2 which was choosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The number of the student is 30 students. The data obtained by giving multiple choice test. About the test, the students are asked to choose the appropriate vocabulary based on the context of the test. The test consist of 7 indicators of vocabulary. There are synonym, antonym, collocation word, noun, verb, adjective and adverb. The result shows that the students score in vocabulary mastery is 54.79, and the students have problem in verb with mean score 32.26 % of correct answers and adverb with mean score 44.99%. In conclusion, from the result above shows that the students’ vocabulary mastery level of SMK Labor Binaan FKIP Universitas Riau is in mediocre level..Key Words: Study, Vocabulary, Mastery

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of the research is to find out the type of conceptual metaphor that is most frequently used in the headlines of the political news posted online on the website of The Jakarta Post. This research is conducted by using qualitative research which is descriptive analysis. The data collection technique of this research is a study document and uses MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure) as a method to analyze the data. The result shows that there are 183 headlines of political news using structural metaphor, 71 headlines of political news using ontological metaphor, and 31 headlines of political news using orientational metaphor. It is concluded that the structural metaphor is the most frequently used in headline news of The Jakarta Post, which mostly associated the concept of politics with the concept of war.Keywords: Conceptual Metaphor, Politics, Headline News, The Jakarta Post.

Abstract

This paper discusses the correlation between two variables, namely vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability of the first-year students at SMPN 1 Tebing Tinggi. The researcher used a quantitative research method as the data approach. The population consisted of the first-year students with a total of 124 students. The researcher used a simple random sampling technique and selected 32 students from all classes. The instruments used were two types of tests: multiple-choice tests and written tests. To analyze the data, the researcher used SPSS Statistics 25. The research results indicate that the first-year students of SMPN 1 Tebing Tinggi achieved a good level of vocabulary mastery and a mediocre level of writing descriptive text ability. The results also indicate that there is a correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability. The Rxy distribution of the coefficient correlation was 0.408. This means that there was a correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability of the first-year students at SMPN 1 Tebing Tinggi at a fair level. Thus, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hα) was accepted.

Abstract

This study investigates the learning strategies used by second-semester students in the English Education Study Program during reading and writing activities in the Intermediate Reading and Writing course. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the study involved 117 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire covering metacognitive, cognitive, and socioaffective strategies based on O’Malley and Chamot’s (1990) classification. The findings reveal that all three strategy categories were used at a high level, with socioaffective strategies being the most dominant, followed by metacognitive and cognitive strategies. Students showed strong help-seeking behavior and active monitoring of comprehension, yet demonstrated weaknesses in planning, peer feedback, and applying new grammar structures in their writing. These results suggest that students rely more on social support and vocabulary-based strategies rather than planning and grammar-oriented approaches, indicating the need for instructional practices that promote more balanced and autonomous learning.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of ice-breaking activities implemented by English teachers in the teaching process at SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. A quantitative descriptive design was employed, and data were collected through a questionnaire. The results indicate that students generally held positive perceptions of ice-breaking activities, particularly regarding their role in creating a supportive and engaging classroom atmosphere. These activities were also perceived as effective in reducing anxiety, fostering comfort, and encouraging active participation and interaction among students. However, their influence on focus, concentration, and comprehension of lesson material was considered moderate, suggesting that ice-breaking activities serve primarily as motivational and social supports rather than direct tools for enhancing academic understanding. Overall, ice-breaking activities are regarded as beneficial supplementary strategies that can promote a positive classroom atmosphere, enhance students’ emotional readiness, and support increased engagement in English learning.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine whether impromptu speaking affects students' English-speaking ability in the 2024–2025 school year at MAN 2 Kuantan Singingi. This quasi-experimental study employed a quantitative methodology and a pre-experiment, one group pretest, and post-test research design. Oral dialogue in a single scenario was the instrument used to gather the data, and SPSS 27 was used for analysis. The study's sample consisted of 40 11th generation students, while the population consists of all Pare Arabic and English Course students at MAN 2 Kuantan Singingi. According to the results, the experimental class's average pretest and posttest scores increased by 21 points. In contrast, the average student's score only rose 18 points above the pretest score in the controlled class, which employed traditional methods. Furthermore, the independent sample t-test result was 0.009, which is less than the alpha value of 0.05. The study's findings suggest that students' English-speaking skills improved as a result of impromptu speaking. Keyword: Impromptu speaking, English-speaking, English teaching Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memastikan apakah berbicara dadakan Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah berbicara spontan memengaruhi kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa pada tahun ajaran 2024–2025 di MAN 2 Kuantan Singingi. Penelitian kuasi-eksperimental ini menggunakan metodologi kuantitatif dan desain penelitian pra-eksperimen, satu kelompok, pra-tes, dan pasca-tes. Dialog lisan dalam satu skenario adalah instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data, dan SPSS 27 digunakan untuk analisis. Sampel penelitian terdiri dari 40 siswa generasi ke-11, sedangkan populasi terdiri dari semua siswa Kursus Bahasa Arab dan Bahasa Inggris Pare di MAN 2 Kuantan Singingi. Menurut hasil, skor pretest dan posttest rata-rata kelas eksperimen meningkat sebesar 21 poin. Sebaliknya, skor rata-rata siswa hanya naik 18 poin di atas skor pretest di kelas kontrol, yang menggunakan metode tradisional. Lebih jauh, hasil uji t sampel independen adalah 0,009, yang lebih kecil dari nilai alfa 0,05. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa meningkat sebagai hasil dari berbicara spontan. Kata kunci: Berbicara spontan, berbicara bahasa Inggris, pengajaran bahasa Inggris
