Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify how far students of English Education program of Batanghari University can understand the differences of cultures that can be seen from the movie entitled “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Their comprehension about the cross cultural understanding will be notified from their analysis towards the movie. The subject of this research is semester VI students of class A1 which consists of 23 students. Meanwhile the object of the research is students’ analysis of cross cultural matters in a form of interview after they watch the movie. The method used in this research is mix method. Qualitative approach is used in analyzing the cross cultural matters in their analysis towards the movie and quantitative approach is used to count the forms of cross cultural matters that occured from the movie. The hypothesis of this research is that the students are able to  understand the difference of other cultures especially American, British, or Australian culture which is related to their major.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the strategies that are used by English students of Batanghari University in translating texts from English to Indonesian language. The method of this research is qualitative. The sample is taken from the third semester students of English Education of Batanghari University which consists of two classes; one class consists of 27 students and anothe one consists of 33 students. The instrument of this research is a translation test. In analying the data, translation theory proposed by Newmark is used. The findings of this research show that there are only four methods used by the students in translating the text. They are word-for-word translation, literal translation, free translation, and communicative translation. Moreover, the most dominant method used by the students are literal translation method. The second dominant method is word-for-word translation. Meanwhile, the third and fourth translation method applied by the students are free translation and communicative translation. From the result of the analysis, it is also shown that there are four methods which did not applied by the students in translating the text. They are faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, and idiomatic translation method. Here, the students used more than one method to translate the narrative text. Based on the data, literal translation method is the most dominant method used by the students. It happened because the students just translate the words by its literal meaning and they tried to achieve the nearest equivalence meaning in the target language.

Abstract

Every culture has its own ways in applying its norms and politeness values.  Some things that are considered polite in one culture could be considered impolite in another. This greatly affects the utilization of politeness value that is used by students in English textbooks that they use compared to their own culture that would creates some questions about politeness like which politeness value that they are supposed to use. Besides, politeness values in Eastern country like Indonesia are very prominent. The culture in Indonesia usually uses negative politeness values in conversations. This paper explains about the importance of norms and politeness values in interaction within English class. The purpose of this paper is to describe the English learning that is not only taken from textbooks but also inserts the politeness values of that very culture in order to enable the students in comparing and determining the forms and differences between those two politeness values. This paper is expected to give valuable contribution to English teachers in junior and senior high school about how to see the difference between politeness values of textbooks and their own culture and how to apply the politeness values shown on the English textbooks.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the correlation of students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability at the fourth semester of English Education Program of Batanghari University. This research used quantitative method. The population of the data is the fourth semester students of English Education Program of Batanghari University meanwhile the technique of taking sample is cluster random sampling. The total sample of the research is 30 students and the instrument that used in this research is test for variable (X) and variable (Y). In calculating the data, SPSS 17.00 program with spearman rank technique analysis was used. The result showed that there was a significant correlation of students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability. Based on the indexes correlation table, the correlation coefficient in the value of 0.411 is in the range of indexes scale 0.400-0.600 which means that the correlation of vocabulary mastery (X) and translation ability (Y) is in Fair correlation, with the correlation coefficient is 0.411. In conclusion, the correlation is positive and can be categorized as fair correlation.
