Abstract

Abstract: Indonesia is a disaster-prone country with thousands of incidents every year. Humanitarian volunteers play an important role in responding to emergency situations, but are vulnerable to back injuries due to incorrect lifting techniques. Injuries such as Low Back Pain can compromise the health of volunteers in the future. Responding to this challenge, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi together with Muhammadiyah Sukabumi Disaster Resilience Institute organized Back Safety Training (BST) for 23 volunteers. This activity is part of the capacity building program for volunteers as an effort to prevent injuries to the back of the body while on duty to provide assistance in disaster situations. The main objective is to build awareness and habits of volunteers to always be aware of their own safety when providing assistance. Volunteers are expected to be able to master the steps of strengthening exercises for the main muscles to lift/move loads with the correct technique, namely the thigh muscles, upper front arms and back. The method of this training is by FGD and also simulation by teaching safe techniques when lifting and moving loads at disaster sites. The activity partners were Disaster Resilience Institutions/Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) in the Sukabumi city area who were delegates from ortoms totaling 28 people. 82.1% of participants had never received BST training, and 65.6% did not consistently maintain the correct body position. BST uses educational video media and guidebooks. Evaluation of participants using google form, after the training the average final ability of participants is more than 94.3%. Regular supervision and daily joint exercises need to be carried out to form strong habits and based on self-awareness.
