Abstract

Lighting is one of the most important aspect of designing a room. A good school should be designed so that it can increase the effectivity of the learning process. The lighting design standard of classrooms in Indonesia is 250 lux – 350 lux. Meanwhile, the type of lamp recommended in a classroom is one with a neutral white lamp color that could blend well with natural daylight. The schools in Surabaya that occupies old Dutch colonial buildings today generally have problems in lighting intensity. The evaluation result in SMA Santa Maria Surabaya on January 9, 2010 showed that all of the classrooms have lighting problems since they did not fullfil classroom lighting standards. Among 19 classrooms evaluated, 13 classrooms didn’t fullfil the standard (too dark) and the other 6 were overbright. Hence, the lighting designs in these schools need to be corrected to solve vision problems. This research was done using the quantitative method of approach, and correction will be performed with simulation and optimation method to achieve the optimum lighting standard.

Abstract

City growth will eventually affect its people lifestyle. Higher buildings, which serve higher economic value, will need to be supported with open area for social interaction. The three principal of sustainable design is not only to embrace the economic growth, but also to consider social interaction and ecology in it. Since the colonial era Balconies and jalousies are well known as architectural elements that provide more space for interaction, economically possible to make use of, and provide shading for the space underneath. This research will investigate how these elements efficiency will affect the introduction of daylight into interior space to save energy. This quantitative research was conducted with IES-VE 2012 software with embedded suncast, Flucs-DL, and Radiance software in it to calculate the depth of daylight penetration and glare potential. The simulation was set in tropical country (Singapore).

Abstract

Education plays an important role in human development. Through learning, humans are enabled to write, speak, and create. The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted education, especially for those who depend on free educational programs that rely on volunteers for day-to-day operation. Children in the golden age are the most affected. Online learning can never cover the social interaction provided by offline learning. This research was done in Rumah Langit, which is a free community learning center for children, located in Rusunawa Urip Sumoharjo, Surabaya. After several months of getting to know the people involved, their surrounding environment, and participating in their daily activities, it could be clearly seen that Rumah Langit was lacking learning media. Especially learning media for children in the golden age who are often very curious and are in the stage of developing their five senses. OTTM (One, Two, Three, More?) is a modular furniture unit specifically developed for learning media at home for preschoolers, designed using the six steps of the design thinking method (Understand, Observe, Define Point of View, Ideate, Prototype, and Test). With its endless configurations, OTTM can be used as an open storage, a table and chair set for preschoolers, a seating chair for adults, and learning media for kids. It was inspired by the Montessori method of learning, which allows children to be creative and learn at their own pace. OTTM offers an easy and fun way of learning at home for children, especially for children in the golden age. By using OTTM, children can learn about basic counting, colors and how primary colors create secondary colors, and about shapes, from geometric to organic shapes.

Abstract

Education is an effort to improve human resource quality and growth in a country, especially for those who have disabilities. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, in 2020, as many as 5% of Indonesia’s population are disabled. Autism is one of the pervasive intellectual disabilities in children that hinders the development of cognitive, language, behavior, communication, and social interaction. In 2019, the work vacancy for the disabled only covers 0.28% of the general job opportunity in Indonesia and further decreased by 0.1% in 2020. Therefore, to improve the human life quality of the disabled, an appropriate education system and facilities that apply Universal Design compliance to their needs were essential. The uses 5 steps of Design Thinking methods consist of Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test methods are hopefully will resolve the problem systematically, in detail, and accurately. The result produced multifunction furnitur by applying FURNURTURE, which stands for Furniture and Nurture, as the design concept. FURNITURE has several functions, namely; an education facility, a therapeutic facility, and storage by applying the Universal Design principle. Hopefully, the design, product, and design principles could stand as a model for other autism educational facilities and services.

Abstract
