The Relation between Healing Time and Patient’s Characteristic in the Treatment of Common Warts with the Application of 80% Phenol Solution Dina Arwina Dalimunthe; Remenda Siregar; Chairiyah Tanjung

Abstract

Background: Common warts are skin diseases which caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. There are many modalities treatment for common warts, one of them is the application of 80% phenol solution that is classified as topical treatment. Purpose: To determine the healing time in treatment of common warts with the application of 80% phenol solution and it’s relation with age and sex of the patients. Methods: Open clinical trial was done at Dr. Pirngadi General Hospital Medan and H. Adam Malik General Hospital Medan from February to June 2013 on 17 patients with common warts. The application of 80% phenol solution was performed on patients and continued every week until complete regression, maximum of 6 weeks. Follow up was carried out every week for six weeks to observe healing time. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test with α=0,05. Result: After six weeks, 11 patients (64,7%) were healed. Healing time was varied from 3 to 6 weeks, mostly 4 weeks (45,4%). Result of Mann-Whitney test showed statistically significant relationship between healing time and age (p=0,027) whereas the healing time were faster on patient 14 years and older, and no relation between healing time and sex (p=0,422). Conclusion: There was relation between healing time in application of 80% phenol solution with age in treatment of common warts and no relation with the sex of the patient.Key words: common warts, 80% phenol solution.

Abstract

Background: Scabies is a highly transmitted disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mite. The prevalence and complication which can occur has made scabies a significant public health problem in the developing countries. Objective : To find out the characteristics of scabies patients in the Dermatology and Venereology department at Haji Adam Malik general hospital Medan, in the period of January 2010-December 2012 on scabies epidemiology so that any measures for the improvement of handling patients in the future can be taken.Method : The research was a descriptive study, using secondary data analysis from medical records of scabies patients who visited the Dermatology and Venereology department at Haji Adam Malik general hospital Medan, in the period of January 2010-December 2012.Results : The characteristics of scabies patients were generally males (59.4%), 11 to 15 years old (28.3%), no/pre-school/elementary school graduates (47.1%), students (55.1%). There were 138 scabies patients who visited the Dermatology and Venereology department at Haji Adam Malik general hospital Medan, in the period of January 2010-December 2012.. The clinical charactheristics of scabies were all of the patients had subjective symptoms of pruritus (100%), the morphology of most of the lesion was papules (87.7%), and the location of most of the lesion was on legs (39.9%).Conclusion : The characteristics of scabies patients in the Dermatology and Venereology department at Haji Adam Malik general hospital Medan, were generally males, 11 to 15 years old, no/pre school/Elementary School graduates, students. There were 138 scabies patients who visited the Dermatology and Venereology department at Haji Adam Malik general hospital Medan, in the period of January 2010-December 2012.. Abstract

Introduction : Psoriasis is a common, chronic, and recurrent erythropapulosquamous disease of the skin, characterized by erythematous plaques covered by silvery white scales.Determine the characteristics of psoriasis patients in dermatovenereology department Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan periode January 2010 to December 2012.Method : A retrospective study was performed based on the medical records of psoriasis patients from January 2010 to December 2012.Results : There were 75 cases of psoriasis; 47 male (62.7%) and 28 female (37.3%). Most of the cases (29 cases) was found at the age of 46-60 years old group (38.8%). The majority of the ethnic is Batak (47 cases; 62.7%). The majority of patient education is high school graduate (34 cases; 45.3%). Psoriasis mostl suffered by civil servant and and self-employed individual each of them are 19 cases (25.3%). The commonest clinical type was psoriasis vulgaris 61 cases (81.3%).Conclusion : In Haji Adam Malik Medan general hospital, psoriasis prevalency is higher in male, age group 46-60 years, the ethnics are Batak, high school graduate, civil servant and self-employed. Most type of psoriasis is psoriasis vulgaris. Keywords : psoriasis; characteristic
