Abstract

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection is a chronic diseasethat threatensthe health ofmillionsof people inthe worldand causing disability. One of the factors that causedisabilityis HIVmusclewasting,causing a decrease inthe quality of lifethat interferethe daily activitiesand evenincreased mortality. Properphysical exercise is needed to prevent and treat muscle wasting.Methods: This studyusinghuman subjectswithclinicalstageII HIVinfection. Subjectswere groupedinto two:Intervention (n =9) that subjects whogetmoderate-intensity physicalexercise (HIVA) for 8weeks andControl (n=9) as subjects wereobservedfor 8 weeks. Muscles samples were taken fromthe vastuslateralismusclebiopsiesthat performed24 hoursafterthe lastphysical exercise,immunohistochemicalexaminationwithmonoclonalantibodyanti-Pax7, anti-MyoD1 andanti-myogenin and measurement of thigh circumference.Results: Therewere significant increase in regeneration of skeletal muscle in the intervention group(increasing of Pax7, MyoD1 and myogenin) than the control groupand significant increase in quadricepsmuscles mass as measured by thigh circumference (p < 0.001).Conclusion: HIVA physical exerciseof moderate intensityincreasesskeletal muscleregenerationinclinicalstageII HIVinfectionthroughthe increasingPax7, MyoD1, myogeninexpression and followed by an increaseof quadriceps muscles mass.

Abstract

Background: Weakness of upper extremity can affect the ability to perform daily activities in post-stroke patients. Power-Assisted Functional Electrical Stimulation (PAFES) may give motor reeducation and sensory feedback to improve motor recovery through neuroplasticity.Aim: To evaluate the effect of PAFES and occupational exercise on post-stroke patient hand dexterity and motor unit activity of extensor digitorum communis muscle.Material and methods: Twenty post-stroke patients enrolled in the study were divided intervention group whom received PAFES and occupational exercise, and control group whom received occupational exercise only. Each group underwent 30 minutes per session of treatment, 5 times a week, for 3 weeks. The Root Mean Square (RMS) for measuring motor unit activity of extensor digitorum communis muscle; Box and Block Test (BBT) and Nine Hole Peg Test (NHPT) for measuring hand dexterity were evaluated before and after intervention.Result: There were significant improvements of RMS (p<0.001), BBT (p<0.001) and NHPT (p=0.002) in intervention group after receiving PAFES and occupational exercise. The improvement of BBT in intervention group was significant compared with control group (p=0.028), however, no significant improvement of NHPT was found between groups.Conclusion: PAFES and occupational exercise could improve motor unit activity of the extensor digitorum communis muscle and hand dexterity in post-stroke patient.

Abstract

Background: Overweight and obesity are major public health concerns globally and cause poor quality of life. Physical exercise plays a major role in reducing body weight, however, lack of time for exercise leads to a lack of regular exercise. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is proposed as an alternative exercise in dealing with overweight and obesity and ultimately increases the quality of life. Aim: To proposed as an alternative exercise in dealing with overweight and obesity and ultimately increases the quality of life. Material and Methods: A randomized-controlled trial was conducted in a rehabilitation outpatient clinic. Twenty-two subjects with overweight or obesity were randomly allocated into the intervention and control group. The intervention group received HIIT using a treadmill (HR rest + 80-90% HR reserve) with inclination changes for 30 minutes (preceded by warming up and ending with cooling, 5 minutes each), 3 times a week, for 2 weeks. The Control group received no intervention. Change of quality of life was assessed by using SF-36 before and after the intervention. Results: Subjects’ baseline body height, body weight, BMI, VO2Max, and SF-36 on both groups showed no significant differences (p<0.05). Subjects in the control group are older than the intervention group (34.82±3.09 vs 30.36±2.58, p=0.002). Significant improvement of SF-36 was found only in domains of physical function in the intervention group (p=0.02). However,he between-group comparison analysis showed no difference of SF-36 Δ Value between groups. Conclusion: High-intensity interval training can be proposed as an exercise therapy option to improve the quality of life of males with overweight and obesity. It is necessary to do further research on HIIT with a larger number of samples, longer time, group training, and combined with other exercises.

Abstract

  Background: Cerebral Palsy is a non-progressive disorder due to the presence of lesions in the brain. This affects the early development of the baby which affects the ability to move, balance, and posture. Cerebral Palsy is causes of children's motor disabilities, mostly in decreasing the flexibility of lower extremity muscles and affecting the pattern of walking in sufferers. Objectives: This study aims to identify the relationship between exercise management and the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) as a parameter of walking patterns in children with cerebral palsy. Research Design: This study used a descriptive observational-analytical cross sectional study in 15 cerebral palsy patients aged 4 to 19 years with GMFCS I-II and had received an exercise program of at least 8 weeks. Data analysis using the Spearman test on SPSS Statistics 26.0. Result: Obtained the value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.01) and the correlation coefficient (ρ) = 0.848 on the relationship of exercise intensity and road pattern parameters.  Conclusion: There is a relationship between exercise management and gait pattern parameters.

Abstract

Background: A sedentary lifestyle such as watching TV and video for a long time, or playing PlayStation, is experienced by two-thirds of children, especially in developing countries. The fitness levels of elementary school students are not all in a good condition. So far, there is no study of healthy children with 2-minute walk test method. Therefore, the researcher is interested to do research about fitness level with 2-minute walk test. Aim: The purpose of this research is to determine the fitness level of Mojo VI elementary school Surabaya. Material and Methods: The method used in this research is descriptive observational with a cross-sectional research design using total sampling. Data collection was using primary data obtained from the results of 2-minute walk test. Results: The fitness level based on age obtained the highest average value at the oldest age of 12 years old with an average of 207.30 m±17.359. While the lowest average value at the youngest age was 184.96 m±15.991. Meanwhile, based on gender, it obtained higher average value in male students (201.81 m±22.06 m) than female students (194.30 m±14.29 m). Conclusion: The higher the age, the higher the student's fitness level. Meanwhile, based on gender, the fitness level of a male is higher than a woman.

Abstract

Background: Depression is one of the most common causes of disabilities and poor quality of life worldwide. One-fifth of patients fail to respond to antidepressant therapy. Hence, adjunct therapy is urgently needed. Aim: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and aerobic exercise as adjunct therapy on activity of daily living and quality of life in depressed patients. Material and Methods: A randomized-controlled experiment was conducted between May 2019 and January 2020. Twenty-seven depressed patients were divided into three groups for two weeks: antidepressant-only, antidepressant-and-aerobic exercise, and antidepressant-and-rTMS. The Barthel Index and SF-36 were used to assess the activity of daily living and quality of life. Results: After the intervention, there were no appreciable changes in the Barthel Index scores in any of the three groups (p>0.05). Following therapy, SF-36 results for physical function, bodily discomfort, public health, vitality, social function, emotional role functioning, and mental health all showed substantial improvements across groups (p 0.05). Patients in the antidepressant and rTMS groups improved more than those in the other two groups in the areas of overall health (15.71±6.075, p=0.009), emotional role functioning (20.29±11.940, p=0.049), and mental health (14.29±6.075, p=0.041). However, the Barthel Index score changes did not differ between groups (p=0.664). Conclusion: Better quality of life improvement in the rTMS group compared to the other two groups supports the use of rTMS as an additional therapy. It aims to enhance quality of life in patients with moderate and severe first-episode depression.
