Abstract

Introduction: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (lupus) and its unpredictable flares have lowering the patients’ quality of life significantly. Precipitating factors’ exposures need to be reduced by doing preventive behaviors to reduce the frequency of lupus flare. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between precipitating factors and preventive behavior in lupus patients. Method: This is a cros-sectional study. Population was all lupus patients doing regular check-up in Rheumatology Unit of Dr. Soetomo Public Hospital, Surabaya. Sample was lupus patients who did regular check-up in the period of October-December 2014 and matched to sample’s criteria. Sample size was 36 enrolled by means of total sampling. Independent variabel: precipitating factors of lupus flare; dependent variable: knowledge of lupus, attitude (self-efficacy) and preventive action towards exposures. Instruments used were questionnaire of lupus precipitating factors and ODAPUSHEBI (part 1,2,3). Data analysis used Spearman Rho correlation with α<0.05. Result: Most respondents are late adulthood, get married, high school graduates and actively working. The majority had lupus for 1-2 years. Precipitating factors were mostly physical stres (66.7%). Symptom of lupus that most often relapse was joint pain. Knowledge of lupus in all respondents was high, as for attitude mostly were high and most respondents doing optimal preventive action. There was no correlation between the precipitating factors of lupus flare with lupus knowledge (p=0.342) and attitude (p=0.651). There was a weak but significant correlation between the precipitating factors with preventive action (r = 0.360; p=0.031). Discussion: Precipitating factors of lupus flare vary among patients so that preventive actions taken adjust to the type of exposure. The preventive action taken optimally could minimize the recurrence of lupus flare. There is a correlation between the precipitating factors of flare with preventive action in lupus patients.

Abstract

One of the developmental tasks of the elderly is to increase spirituality by getting closer to God. In individuals who embrace a certain religion, spirituality is closely related to religiosity which involves religious rituals and activities. Religious appreciation has a greater influence on the physical and mental health of the elderly. This study aimed to analyze the influence of religiosity towards depression in institutionalized elderly. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 40 Catholic elderly living in nursing home. The variables of religiosity and depression were measured by valid and reliable CRS and GDS instruments. Linear regression test was used in data analysis. Results: The majority were very religious (65%) and did not experience depression (62%). Religiosity significantly affected depression in the elderly (p=0.018). Religiosity determined 13.8% variance of depression in the elderly (R2=0.138). Discussion: The elderly have a higher desire to get closer to God than younger ages. Elderly who have religious beliefs will feel strong and experience inner peace so that there is no depressive feeling. Conclusion: Religiosity significantly influence depression in the elderly. Religiosity determines 13.8% variance of depression in institulionalized elderly.

Abstract

This activity aimed to maintain or increase the vitality of the elderly living in nursing home so as to optimize health status in old age. The method used were health education (HE) program about walking exercise, demonstration and redemonstration of walking exercise, as well as measuring vital sign (blood pressure) of the elderly before and after walking exercise. The instruments used were knowledge questionnaire, walking exercise observation sheet, and vital sign observation sheet. Parameters measured were the level of knowledge and blood pressure. Participants were elderly people living in a private nursing home in Surabaya (n=82). The majority were elderly women (79.3%) who were in the old category, namely 75-90 years old (59.8%). Before the HE program, the majority had insufficient knowledge about walking exercise (43.9%), then this level was increased became a sufficient level in the majority after the HE program (56.1%). There were 26 elderly participated in the walking exercise redemonstration (31.7%), all of whom were hypertensive. Before walking exercise, the Mean systolic blood pressure was 142.96 mmHg and the Mean diastolic was 75.92 mmHg. After walking exercise, 100% elderly experienced a decrease in systolic blood pressure with a Mean of 122.73 mmHg and diastolic with a Mean of 68.42 mmHg. There were only 7.7% elderly who did not experience a decrease in diastolic blood pressure after walking exercise. The results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test showed that walking exercise had a significant effect on systolic (p=0.000) and diastolic (p=0.002) blood pressure in hypertensive elderly. Walking exercise is a very appropriate sport for the elderly.
