Abstract

Orthodontic is one of the dental treatment that has a purpose to repair the position of teeth. For patient who wears fixed orthodontic appliance will have an enhancement of accumulation of plaque which caused by the diffulty of removing the plaque it self, with the result that higher risk of gingivitis may occur in patient using fixed orthodontic appliance. The purpose of this study is to give an overview of gingivitis in first year students of medical and health faculty who used fixed orthodontic appliance. Statistic method which is applied to analyze this study is descriptive data analysis test method. Index measurement that is used in this study is gingiva Loe and Silness Index (Gingivval Index). The result from this study is 89% of student who used fixed orthodontic appliance having lower risk of gingivitis criteria.

Abstract

Background: A popular medicinal plant in Indonesia, red shoot leaves (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp) have been extensively explored for their biological activity and potential to promote hard tissue healing in tooth sockets after extraction. However, few studies have examined this potential. Analyzing the impact of red leaf extract with different solvents on alveolar bone repair in the post-extraction socket in Wistar rats was the aim of this investigation.Method: This study aimed to determine differences in the healing process of bone after tooth extraction. Conducted on 15 male Wistar rats (12 weeks old, weighing 150 – 200 grams). The experiment includes three groups: Group A (5 animals received a gel base as a negative control group), Group B: (5 animals received 2% n-hexane gel treatment of red shoot leaves) and Group C (5 animals received 2% extract ethanol gel of red shoot leaves, based on designated observation days 30. The assessment involves bone remodeling area o from radiograph.Outcome: The average alveolar bone density varies greatly, as indicated by the study's p value of 0.000 (p < 0.005). The group that had 2% n-hexane gel treatment for red shoot leaves had the highest average alveolar bone density. According to the results of the phytochemical screening test, the n-hexane extract included triterpenoid and steroids, but the ethanol extract contained flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids. The findings of this study demonstrate that the use of solvents with varying polarity can have an impact on bone remodeling.Conclusion: The alveolar bone mineral density of Wistar rats following tooth extraction was increased by 2% n-hexane gel treatment of red shoot leaves.

Abstract

Background: Dental ergonomics plays a crucial role in preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dental professionals, including dental students who are beginning clinical practice. Studies from 2020–2025 indicate that although students possess basic ergonomic knowledge, its practical application remains low and MSD complaints are still prevalent, highlighting the need to examine differences in knowledge across educational stages. Objective: To assess and compare dental ergonomics knowledge between second-year and final-year dental students.Methods: This comparative analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from January to April 2025 using a validated and reliable ergonomics knowledge questionnaire. Samples were selected through stratified random sampling from eligible second-year and final-year students. Data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney test.Results: A total of 158 students participated. The instrument demonstrated strong validity and reliability. As the data were not normally distributed, non-parametric analysis was applied. A significant difference in knowledge levels was found between the two groups (p = 0.035), with final-year students scoring higher.Conclusion: Dental ergonomics knowledge differed significantly by academic level, suggesting that longer academic exposure and preclinical experience contribute to improved understanding of ergonomics.
