Abstract

The research method was quasi experimental research by using simple factorial design 2x2. The population in this research was the second grade students of English Teaching Department of IKIP PGRI Madiun. The writer used cluster random sampling to get the sample. It consists of 60 students which were divided into two classes, II D consisting 30 students as a control class and II B consisting 30 students as an experimental class. The instruments used to collect the data were writing test to get the score of writing skill. Documentation was used to get the data of students’ intelligence. Before the instruments were used, the tryout was done to know the validity and readiability of instruments. The writer analyzed the data in term of their frequency distribution, normality, and homogeneity. Then, the data were analyzed by using multifactoral analysis 2X2.The findings in this research lead to some conclusions: (1) GIST is more effective than DI for teaching writing; (2) The students having high intelligence have better writing skill than the students having low intelligence; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ intelligence for teaching writing. The effect of teaching strategies on the students’writing skill depends on the students’intelligence.Key words: Teaching, Writing, GIST, Direct Instruction, Intelligence.

Abstract

This activities conducted   to overcome the problem of rubbish produced by the environment around. In this case, plastics as the main focus to be hadlled in the form of handicraff, such as bag, wallet, pencil case, and handphone case. Some purposes will be gained, they are (1) decreasing the number of rubbish produced by environment, especially plastics bag; (2) helping the housewives to increase their income by making some handicraff from plastics; (3) supporting the envirnment to be a go green area. This activities have been done in a routine workshops attended by some housewives in two group activities. The result of activities are; (1) some products from plastics , (2) positif activities done by some housewives, and (3) clean environtment/go green area. Keywords: rubbish, plastics bag, housewife, and go green area.

Abstract

This research aimed at (1) describing the implementation of GIST strategy in the process of teaching reading viewed from the cognitive aspect having by the students; (2) finding the positive aspects of the implementation of GIST strategy; (3) knowing the weaknesses of the implementation of GIST strategy in the process of teaching reading viewed from the cognitive aspect. The method in this research was descriptive qualitative. In doing the research, there were some steps to be implemented to collect the data. They were observation, interview, and documentation. Then, analyzing data was done by reducing the data, presenting the data and drawing conclusion or verification. The result of the research showed that (1) GIST has been implemented maximally by the lecture based on the characteristics of this teaching strategy. To dig up the students’ cognitive aspects, the lecture provide the specific worksheet which represents the students’ cognitive level for higher order thinking skill, (2) GIST creates the students’ character in a good manner, such as; active, responsible and confidence. They also learn how to work in a team; (3) Some weaknesses found in this research are; It needs a long time to create the instrument  to support  the implementation of GIST and Evaluation must be done by combining both cognitive level and  the level of reading ability.

Abstract

This research integrates Powtoon videos and WhatsApp group classes to teach reading in Intensive reading subjects. It describes the implementation of Powtoon Video and Whatsapp Group Classes in Intensive Reading classes for English Teaching Department students of Universitas PGRI Madiun during the pandemic era. Descriptive qualitative was chosen as a research method. The subject of this research is the first-semester students of the English Teaching Department consisting of 16 students. The research data were collected through observation and interviews. The collected data was then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of this research shows that, in general, the process of online teaching by using Whatsapp Group Class and Powtoon video is conducted into two sections. The first is preparation and the second is implementation. In preparation, the lecturers have to prepare some teaching devices, such as lesson plans, Powtoon video material, YouTube channel, and some rules for conducting the class. The class implementation consists of pre, main /breaking time, and closing activities. The different things in this research are found in the main activities or it’s called breaking time. It’s different from real classroom activities. The class was conducted with extraordinary treatments and in boundless time caused of the low access to internet signal and most of the students live in rural areas. This type of combination makes the students feel comfortable because they can access the material at every time and everywhere. By this situation, it will create a meaningful teaching-learning process, the student’s motivation will appear automatically, and they become a more active and self-individual learner.
